A wavelet transform method for studying the energy distribution characteristics of microseismicities associated rock failure

Microseismicity signals released during rock failure process are firstly recorded using microseismicity monitoring system.A wavelet transform scheme is then developed on the basis of the discrete wavelet transform and implemented into MATLAB to study the energy distribution characteristics of the monitored microseismicity *** wavelet transform scheme decomposes the recorded microseismicity signals into various wavelets at seven scales and eight frequency *** microseismicity energy at each frequency band is then calculated by integrating the wavelets in each *** is found that,for the microseismicity signals recorded during the uniaxial loading of the granite,the microseismicity energies are mainly distributed between the bands 7.8125-15.625 kHz,15.625-31.250 kHz and 31.25-62.5 kHz and the percentages of the released energies at these frequency bands are 8.24%,62.72%,28.08% of the total energies,*** results reveal that the microseismicity energies at these levels are directly related to the damage mechanisms of the granite although further studies are need to identify the failure *** these monitored signals were processed using wavelet transformation to find out the frequency distribution rule and the frequency band energy varying rule of the acoustic emission(AE) signals during the different rock damage and failure *** rock failure mechanism was interpreted from the perspective of the relationship between AE signal frequency change and crack *** frequency band energy distribution histograms of the microseismicity signals at different damage stages were computed and drawn by the energy calculation method of wavelet transformation implemented into *** energy percentage of the low frequency band(d7-a7) and that of the dominated frequency band(d4-d6) and their variation rule were analyzed ***,the critical damage point is that the low frequency energy percentage is above a certain threshol

Impacts of forest management on liana diversity and community structure in a tropical forest in Ghana:implications for conservation

We studied the impacts of liana cutting as a forest management tool on liana diversity （species richness, Shannon diversity index） and community structure （diam- eter distribution, basal area, species dominance） in the Asenanyo Forest Reserve, Ghana. Two types of silvicul- turally treated forests were studied： Logging treated （LT） and Tropical Shelterwood System （TSS） treated forests. An untreated primary forest was included as a control, result- ing in three forest management systems. Lianas with diameter 〉2 cm were identified in ten 40 × 40 m2 plots within each management system. Liana cutting signifi- cantly reduced liana species richness, Shannon diversity index, and basal area in the LT forest after two decades. However, liana species richness and basal area werecomparable in the TSS treated and untreated forests, indi- cating significant recovery in the former after over six decades. Sφrensen similarity index of liana species com- position between the untreated forest and each of the treated forests was moderate. Our findings suggest that liana cutting most likely influenced the dominance of some liana species. In view of the adverse impact of blanket liana cutting on liana diversity, selective liana cutting is rec- ommended as a means of controlling liana numbers while maintaining liana diversity.

The preparation and behavior of powder stearin-based methyl ester sulfonates(MES)with the addition of builder as a glidant agent was *** is an anionic surfactant and its performance is equivalent to petroleum-based linear alkylbenzene sulfonates(LAS),the workhorses of the detergent *** the same time,zeolites or soda ash were the alternative builders for non-phosphate-based *** behavior of powder MES properties was measured in terms of morphology,particle size,cohesion,caking,and *** that,these palm stearin-based MES of carbon chain 16–18 with ratios of 98:2,80:20,and 60:40 in flakes were ground using a high shear mixer by 23,000 rpm to produce powder *** the particle size of MES powder can reduce the powder's cohesion,caking,and *** addition of zeolite or soda ash as a glidant in powdered MES can improve the caking *** high stearic in MES greatly influenced getting fine particle powders and required more glidant *** powder MES with excellent powder characteristics can perform well as a bio-based cleaning product.

Background:Indoor air quality(IAQ)is a concern in kindergartens as children spend much of their time ***,there is a shortage of biological indicators needed for assessing ***,this study evaluated IAQ using transplanted lichen Usnea misaminensis as a biological ***:Lichen samples,collected from Bukit Larut,Perak,Malaysia,were exposed to indoor and outdoor environments in an urban area(Ummi Aiman Kindergarten)and a rural area(Ummi Qaseh Pelangi Kindergarten)for 2 months during August 15 to October 14,*** concentrations of 12 selected elements and the vitality of the lichens were then ***:Increased concentrations of eleven of the twelve elements deposited in the lichen samples in both urban and rural areas were *** both areas,the element concentrations in the samples from the indoor environment was lower than those from the outdoor environment,and those in the rural area were lower than those from in the urban area,suggesting the impacts of traffic *** vitality of the lichens showed no significant change in indoor environment,compared to that in outdoor environment,indicating that even exposed to indoor environment,the lichens remained effective biological indicators as same as they were in the outdoor ***:Lichens are effective biological indicators for both outdoor and indoor ***,outdoor emissions could influence IAQ,which could be problematic in densely populated areas such as *** measures should be taken.

Biological process of soil improvement in civil engineering:A review

The concept of using biological process in soil improvement which is known as bio-mediated soil improvement technique has shown greater potential in geotechnical engineering applications in terms of performance and environmental sustainability. This paper presents a review on the soil microorganisms responsible for this process, and factors that affect their metabolic activities and geometric compatibility with the soil particle sizes. Two mechanisms of biomineralization, i.e. biologically controlled and biologically induced mineralization, were also discussed. Environmental and other factors that may be encountered in situ during microbially induced calcite precipitation （MICP） and their influences on the process were identified and presented. Improvements in the engineering properties of soil such as strength/stiffness and permeability as evaluated in some studies were explored. Potential applications of the process in geotechnical engineering and the challenges of field application of the process were identified.

Profiling neuroprotective potential of trehalose in animal models of neurodegenerative diseases:a systematic review

Trehalose,a unique nonreducing crystalline disaccharide,is a potential disease-modifying treatment for neurodegenerative diseases associated with protein misfolding and aggregation due to aging,intrinsic mutations,or autophagy *** systematic review summarizes the effects of trehalose on its underlying mechanisms in animal models of selected neurodegenerative disorders(tau pathology,synucleinopathy,polyglutamine tract,and motor neuron diseases).All animal studies on neurodegenerative diseases treated with trehalose published in Medline(accessed via EBSCOhost)and Scopus were *** the 2259 studies screened,29 met the eligibility *** to the SYstematic Review Center for Laboratory Animal Experiment(SYRCLE)risk of bias tool,we reported 22 out of 29 studies with a high risk of *** present findings support the purported role of trehalose in autophagic flux and protein *** review identified several other lesser-known pathways,including modifying amyloid precursor protein processing,inhibition of reactive gliosis,the integrity of the blood-brain barrier,activation of growth factors,upregulation of the downstream antioxidant signaling pathway,and protection against mitochondrial *** absence of adverse events and improvements in the outcome parameters were observed in some studies,which supports the transition to human clinical *** is possible to conclude that trehalose exerts its neuroprotective effects through both direct and indirect ***,heterogeneous methodologies and outcome measures across the studies rendered it impossible to derive a definitive *** studies on trehalose would need to clarify three important questions:1)bioavailability with oral administration,2)optimal time window to confer neuroprotective benefits,and 3)optimal dosage to confer neuroprotection.

The electrochemical preparation of polypyrrole-carboxymethylcellulose （PPY-CMC） conducting polymer composite films on indium tin oxide （ITO） glass electrode from an aqueous solution containing pyrrole monomer, ptoluenesulfonate electrolyte and carboxymethylcellulose insulating polymer is reported. The characterization by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy （FT-IR） shows that carboxymethylcellulose （CMC） has been successfully incorporated into polypyrrole structure forming PPY-CMC polymer composite films. The conductivity of the prepared composite films was found to increase with increaseing CMC concentration in pyrrole solution, The optical microscopic results show the influence of CMC concentration in the pyrrole solution over the morphological changes of the prepared films. The dynamic mechanical analysis （DMA） on the prepared PPY-CMC film reveals the higher plastic property of the PPY-CMC composite film.

Contributions of the Cybathlon championship to the literature on functional electrical stimulation cycling among individuals with spinal cord injury:A bibliometric review

Background:Due to its clinically proven safety and health benefits,functional electrical stimulation(FES)cycling has become a popular exercise modality for individuals with spinal cord injury(SCI).Since its inception in 2013,the Cybathlon championship has been a platform for publicizing the potential of FES cycling in rehabilitation and exercise for individuals with *** study aimed to evaluate the contribution of the Cybathlon championship to the literature on FES cycling for individuals with SCI 3 years pre and post the staging of the Cybathlon championship in ***:Web of Science,Scopus,ScienceDirect,IEEE Xplore,and Google Scholar databases were searched for relevant studies published between January 2013 and July *** quality of the included studies was objectively evaluated using the Downs and Black ***:A total of 129 articles on FES cycling were retained for analysis.A total of 51 articles related to Cybathlon were reviewed,and 14 articles were ultimately evaluated for the *** 2017,the year following the Cybathlon championship,Web of Science cited 23 published studies on the championship,which was almost 5-fold more than that in 2016(n=5).Training was most often reported as a topic of interest in these studies,which mostly(76.7%)highlighted the training parameters of interest to participating teams in their effort to maximize their FES cycling performance during the Cybathlon ***:The present study indicates that the Cybathlon championship in 2016 contributed to the number of literature published in 2017 on FES cycling for individuals with *** finding may contribute to the lessons that can be learned from participation in the Cybathlon and potentially provide additional insights into research in the field of race-based FES cycling.

Heat and mass transfer analysis on flow of Williamson nanofluid with thermal and velocity slips:Buongiorno model

The thermal and velocity slips of boundary layer of Williamson nanofluid over a stretching sheet are studied *** model is used to explore the heat transfer phenomena caused by Brownian motion and *** similarity transformations,the governing equations are reduced to a set of nonlinear ordinary differential equations(ODEs).These equations are solved numerically by using Shooting *** effects of non-Newtonian Williamson parameter,velocity and thermal slip parameters,Prandtl number,Brownian parameter,Schmidt number,Lewis number,Brownian motion parameter,thermophoresis parameter on velocity,temperature and concentration fields are shown graphically and *** results found that the thickness of boundary layer decreases as the slip and thermal factor parameter ***,present results indicate that the nanofluid temperature and concentration are enhanced with a rise of Williamson *** Nusselt number is reduced with an increase of the Lewis and Prandtl numbers.

The utilization of solar energy is essential to all living things since the beginning of *** addition to being a constant source of energy,solar energy(SE)can also be used to generate heat and *** technology enables to convert the solar energy into electricity by using thermal solar *** energy is perhaps the most easily accessible and plentiful source of sustainable ***-based nanofluid has been considered as a method to improve solar collector performance by absorbing incoming solar energy *** goal of this research is to explore theoretically the Agrawal axisymmetric flow induced by Cu-water nanofluid over a moving permeable disk caused by solar ***,the impacts of Maxwell velocity and Smoluchowski temperature slip are incorporated to discuss the fine points of nanofluid flow and characteristics of heat *** primary partial differential equations are transformed to similarity equations by employing similarity variables and then utilizing bvp4c to resolve the set of equations *** current numerical approach can produce double solutions by providing suitable initial *** addition,the results revealed that the impact of solar collector efficiency enhances significantly due to nanoparticle volume *** suction parameter delays the boundary layer ***,stability analysis is performed and is found that the upper solution is stable and physically trustworthy while the lower one is unstable.
