Piezoelectric atomizer in aeroponic systems:A study of some fluid properties and optimization of operational parameters

The piezoelectric method to atomize fluids in aeroponic systems is known as a new *** the current study,the effects of four independent variables on the misting rate were *** variables were Dosage of Chemical Fertilizer(DCF),the Height of Solution above Piezoelectric Ceramic(HSPC),Piezoelectric Location at the Bottom of the Container(PLBC),and the Container Geometry(CG).Physical properties such as fluid density,viscosity,surface tension,Total Dissolved Solids(TDS),and Electrical Conductivity(EC)of the solutions were ***,optimization was performed to determine suitable ranges of independent variables to get the optimum value of the misting *** showed that the HSPC,PLBC,and CG significantly affect the total misting rate(P<1%).Besides,the DCF,HSPC,and CG have significant effects on surface evaporation at a probability level of 1%.At the temperature of 25℃and for different concentrations of fertilizer,the density,viscosity,surface tension,TDS,and EC varied between 1002-1006.5 kg/m^(3),1.009-1.395 mPas,0.07182-0.07298 N/m,253-3397 mg/L,502-6795 mS/cm,*** misting rate ranged between 0.499 and 5.720 g/*** the outlet of the mist generation container,mass flow rate was in the range of 59.895 to 65.116 g/***,theoretically calculated mist average droplet size was in the range of 2.90 to 2.92 mm for different fertilizer *** present study is the first research on the factors affecting the ultrasonic mist production rate in an aeroponic *** future developments,effect of voltage,frequency,and using horn should be ***,similar research should be done in the field of gas-phase bioreactors(mist bioreactors).

Development of an intelligent system based on ANFIS for predicting wheat grain yield on the basis of energy inputs

Energy is regarded as one of the most important elements in agricultural *** the last decades energy consumption in agriculture has increased,so finding the relationship between energy consumption and crop yields in agricultural production can help to achieve sustainable *** this study several adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system(ANFIS)models were evaluated to predict wheat grain yield on the basis of energy ***,artificial neural networks(ANNs)were developed and the obtained results were compared with ANFIS *** the best ANFIS structure gained in this study,R,RMSE and MAPE were calculated as 0.976,0.046 and 0.4,*** developed ANN was a multilayer perceptron(MLP)with eleven neurons in the input layer,two hidden layers with 32 and 10 neurons and one neuron(wheat grain yield)in the output *** the best ANN model,R,RMSE and MAPE were computed as 0.92,0.9 and 0.1,*** results illustrated that ANFIS model can predict the yield more precisely than ANN.

Energy use pattern and optimization of energy required for broiler production using data envelopment analysis

A literature review shows that energy consumption in agricultural production in Iran is not efficient and a high degree of inefficiency in broiler production exists in *** consumption of broiler production in Ardabil province of Iran was studied and the nonparametric method of data envelopment analysis(DEA)was used to analyze energy efficiency,separate efficient from inefficient broiler producers,and calculate wasteful use of energy to optimize *** was collected using face-to-face questionnaires from 70 broiler farmers in the study *** returns to scale(CCR)and variable returns to scale(BCC)models of DEA were applied to assess the technical efficiency of broiler *** results indicated that total energy use was 154,283 MJ(1000 bird)^-1 and the share of fuel at 61.4%was the highest of all *** indices of energy efficiency,energy productivity,specific energy,and net energy were found to be 0.18,0.02 kg MJ^-1,59.56 MJ kg^-1,and^-126,836 MJ(1000 bird)^-1,*** DEA results revealed that 40%and 22.86%of total units were efficient based on the CCR and BCC models,*** average technical,pure technical,and scale efficiency of broiler farmers was 0.88,0.93,and 0.95,*** results showed that 14.53%of total energy use could be saved by converting the present units to optimal *** contribution of fuel input to total energy savings was 72%and was the largest share,followed by feed and electricity energy *** results of this study indicate that there is good potential for increasing energy efficiency of broiler production in Iran by following the recommendations for efficient energy use.

Effect of needle number on drying rate of kiwi fruit in EHD drying process

Electrohydrodynamic (EHD) drying is a novel method of non-thermal processing. In this drying method, drying can be carried out using either AC or DC high voltages. The thermodynamic considerations regarding the lowering of temperature under EHD drying include rapid rates of evaporation and exothermic interaction of the electric field with a dielectric material. Multi-point and plate electrode systems are efficient in accelerating drying of agricultural materials. The electrode produces corona wind, which resembles a round jet, impinges and removes moisture from the surface. The enhancement of drying rate by corona discharge from needle electrodes has been experimentally evaluated in this study. Effects of three different categories, one needle, nine needles and seventeen needles on drying rate of kiwi fruit were studied, moreover in each category, Experiments were carried out using DC voltage levels of 6, 10.5 and 15 kV and field intensities 4.5 kV/cm. Results showed that the effect of needle number on drying rate was significant and drying rate of kiwi fruit reduced with increasing in needle numbers.

Effects of multipass friction stir processing and Mg addition on the microstructure and tensile properties of Al 1050 alloys

The effects of multipass friction stir processing(FSP)and Mg powder addition on the different microstructure parts,including the stir zone(SZ),heat-affected zone(HAZ),and thermomechanically affected zone(TMAZ)of Al 1050 alloy were *** observations revealed that with the increase in the number of FSP passes,the grain size of the SZ decreased in the non-composite and composite samples,whereas that of the TMAZ and HAZ increased in the non-composite ***,the addition of Mg powder resulted in considerable grain refinement,and increasing the number of the FSP passes resulted in a more uniform distribution of Al-Mg intermetallic compounds in the in-situ composite *** of the tensile test showed that the non-composite sample that underwent four passes of FSP exhibited a higher elongation percentage and a ductile fracture in comparison with those of the base metal and the composite ***,this sample exhibited a brittle fracture and a higher tensile strength in comparison with the base metal and the non-composite *** fabrication of composite samples resulted in a remarkable enhancement in hardness in comparison with the base metal and the non-composite samples that underwent FSP.

State-of-the-art review of some artificial intelligence applications in pile foundations

Geotechnical engineering deals with materials（e.g. soil and rock） that, by their very nature, exhibit varied and uncertain behavior due to the imprecise physical processes associated with the formation of these materials. Modeling the behavior of such materials in geotechnical engineering applications is complex and sometimes beyond the ability of most traditional forms of physically-based engineering methods. Artificial intelligence（AI） is becoming more popular and particularly amenable to modeling the complex behavior of most geotechnical engineering applications because it has demonstrated superior predictive ability compared to traditional methods. This paper provides state-of-the-art review of some selected AI techniques and their applications in pile foundations, and presents the salient features associated with the modeling development of these AI techniques. The paper also discusses the strength and limitations of the selected AI techniques compared to other available modeling approaches.

Progressive collapse resisting capacity of reinforced concrete load bearing wall structures

Reinforced concrete(RC) load bearing wall is widely used in high-rise and mid-rise buildings. Due to the number of walls in plan and reduction in lateral force portion, this system is not only stronger against earthquakes, but also more economical. The effect of progressive collapse caused by removal of load bearing elements, in various positions in plan and stories of the RC load bearing wall system was evaluated by nonlinear dynamic and static analyses. For this purpose, three-dimensional model of 10-story structure was selected. The analysis results indicated stability, strength and stiffness of the RC load-bearing wall system against progressive collapse. It was observed that the most critical condition for removal of load bearing walls was the instantaneous removal of the surrounding walls located at the corners of the building where the sections of the load bearing elements were changed. In this case, the maximum vertical displacement was limited to 6.3 mm and the structure failed after applying the load of 10 times the axial load bored by removed elements. Comparison between the results of the nonlinear dynamic and static analyses demonstrated that the "load factor" parameter was a reasonable criterion to evaluate the progressive collapse potential of the structure.

Evaluation of the ECMWF Precipitation Product over Various Regions of Iran

Easy access to accurate and reliable climate data is a crucial concern in hydrological *** this regard,gridded climate data have recently been provided as an alternative to observational ***,those data should be first evaluated and corrected to guarantee their validity and *** study offered a new approach to assess the ECMWF gridded precipitation data based on some indicators,including correlation coefficient(CC),normalized root-mean-square error(NRMSE),and absolute error(AE)in daily and monthly intervals(2007-2017)across different climatic and geographical areas of ***,an artificial neural network(ANN)model was utilized to correct the ECMWF precipitation *** to the results,NRMSE was less than 2(in 93%of stations)and 5(in63%of stations)on monthly and daily scales,***,CC was above 0.6 in 58%and 94%of stations on daily and monthly scales,*** AE values were from-0.5 to 0.5,in 80%(daily scale)and 50%(monthly scale)of *** corrected the ECMWF precipitation product by ANN,the number of stations with NRMSE less than 5 increased from 63%to 74%on the daily timescale,whereas the number of stations with NRMSE less than 2 reached 95%from 93%on the monthly *** results also showed that the number of stations with CC more than 0.6 increased from 58%to 87%on the daily timescale.

Nano-tribological behavior of graphene nanoplatelet-reinforced magnesium matrix nanocomposites

The corrosion resistance and wear resistance of metallic biomaterials are critically important for orthopedic hard-tissue replacement applications because the lack of such properties not only adversely affects their mechanical integrity but also allows the release of wear debris into the human *** this study,the potential of zirconium(Zr)as an alloying element and graphene nanoplatelets(GNPs)as a nano-reinforcement material were investigated in relation to improving the tribological performance of pure magnesium(Mg).The GNPs-reinforced Mg matrix nanocomposites(MNCs)were fabricated using powder *** indicate that additions of 0.5 wt.%Zr and0.1 wt.%GNPs to Mg matrices significantly improved the wear resistance by 89%and 92%at 200μN load,60%and 80%at 100μN load,and 94%and 93%at 50μN load,respectively,as compared to the wear resistance of pure *** wear depth and coefficient of friction of the MNC containing 0.5 wt.%Zr and 0.1 wt.%GNPs(Mg0.5 Zr0.1 GNPs MNC)were considerably reduced as compared to pure Mg and Mg0.5 *** results demonstrate that the Mg0.5 Zr0.1 GNPs MNC is promising for orthopedic applications in relation to its excellent tribological performance.

Angiographic characteristics of central serous chorioretinopathy in an Egyptian population

· AIM: To describe and analyze the demographic characteristics and to determine the angiographic features of acute central serous chorioretinopathy(CSCR) in an Egyptian population. ·METHODS: A series of consecutive patients presenting with acute idiopathic CSCR to Mansoura Ophthalmology Center Mansoura University who underwent fluorescein angiography (FA) within a 3 -year -period (between January 1, 2007 and December 31, 2009) was retrospectively studied. Patient demographics and angiographic features were studied. Results were compared to those of other Western and Asian populations. ·RESULTS: Fluorescein angiograms of 86 patients were analyzed. 91% were males. The age range of patients was 24 -49 years, with a mean age of (38±6) years. The right eye was the presenting eye in 47% of patients. Eighty seven percent of eyes showed delayed choroidal filling. Thirty -five percent of patients had more than one point of leakage. The macula was the most common site of fluorescein leakage seen in 79% of patients. Peripheral leakage was seen in 14% of patients while peripapillary leakage was seen in 12% of patients. The inkblot leakage pattern was found in 53% of patients. The presenting eye had RPE atrophic changes in 84% of cases. The other eye was assessed in 44 patients (51%). Fifty-five percent of them had signs of RPE atrophic changes. ·CONCLUSION: In the Egyptian population, CSCR is seen at younger age with higher male -to -female ratio and more frequent smokestack leaks than other populations. Despite younger age group, this series of patient showed higher frequency of bilateral and multifocal disease compared to other studies. Roles of psychological stress and choroidal ischemia in pathogenesis of CSCR need further evaluation. ·
