Tunable nitrogen crafted 2D-graphene nano-hybrid from industrial expansive and ecological approach as robust cathode microporous layer to improve performance of a direct methanol fuel cell

In this work, the excess water-stagnation issue in the high current region in direct methanol fuel cells(DMFCs) is resolved by using atomic precision modulated nitrogen-crafted graphene(NG) in the cathode microporous layer by utilizing simplistic,industrial-expansive and ecological strategy. Few-layer 2D-graphene(~2–5 nm thickness) is prepared by bath sonication approach from abundant feedstock-graphite and is treated with nitric acid to yield 1.8 wt.% uniformly dispersed nitrogen containing NG. Specifically, 1:4 weight ratio NG:carbon-black(CB) hybrid architecture, displays 0.252 V in 370 mA cm^(-2) with the peak power density of 93.4 mW cm^(-2), improving cell power density by 45.6% compared with standard one at 60℃ and 1 mol/L methanol/oxygen conditions at ultra-low catalyst loadings and displaying exceptional stability. Atomic insights into NG reveal that interplay between bonding configurations, altered hydrophobic/hydrophilic porosity of graphene(10.6% less wettability from contact angle and 13.1% high electrode porosity measurements) contribute to the better mass-transport-porogenic effect(16.3% high oxygen-permeability), mildly affecting the electron pathway(6.5% reduced in-plane electrical conductivity),overall significantly improving cell performance. Altogether, this work delivers multiple advantages, i.e., the usage of material from facile, sustainable and cost-effective routes, while improving DMFC performance with potential industrial promise.

Applying artificial neural network to predict the viscosity of microalgae slurry in hydrothermal hydrolysis process

Estimation of the viscosity of microalgae slurry is the premise for the design of industrial reactors in microalgal biofuel *** accurately predict the viscosity of microalgae slurry(Chlorella pyrenoidosa),an artificial neural network(ANN)model is designed in this *** the ANN model,the mass fraction of microalgal cell,shear rate,temperature,and retention time during the hydrothermal hydrolysis process are used as the input variables,and the viscosity of microalgae slurry is obtained as the output *** show that the ANN model is in excellent agreement with the experimental *** mean square error(MSE),Mean Absolute Error(MAE),and goodness of fit(R 2)are 0.725,0.484 and 0.991,*** results provide a proof-of-concept for using ANN models to estimate the viscosity of microalgae *** particular,the developed ANN model can accurately predict the viscosity of microalgae slurry in a hydrothermal hydrolysis process,which cannot be accurately predicted by a standard curve fitting method.

Evaluation of Cavity Formation and the Use of Cut-off Wall to Reduce the Risk of Washing Subsurface Fine Material

This study shows the results of mapping numerous cavities and distress which appeared and detected in Qassim area, Saudi Arabia. This phenomenon was observed near a school building and residential area and became a serious risk to occupants and residents. The survey was carried out applying geotechnical techniques which included advancing rotary boreholes to depths of 23 m to 30 m with sampling and testing. The evaluation process also included resistivity imaging profiles using 2D electrical resistivity measurements. Results obtained from this research showed a thick top layer of silty clayey sand soil rich of gypsum and carbonate presenting a hazardous and high-risk soil type. The percentage of fines that are likely to be washed out as a result of chemical disintegration and exposure to significant hydraulic gradient was of great concern. Assessment was made using combined geotechnical and geophysical approach in addition to chemical tests. Based on the data collected and analysis of test results a practical solution was suggested to solve this problem. The use of “cut-off wall” in order to reduce the level of subsurface scour and cajuvity formation were found appropriate. The depth of the cut off wall was determined based on the subsurface geological profile. Advantages of this approach and concerns need to be considered in adopting typical solutions that are presented.

Abdominal Cocoon: A Rare Entity

Background: Abdominal cocoon is a rare disease where small intestine is enclosed in a membrane and commonly presents with features of bowel obstruction. Case Reports: We present two cases: one 28 years old male presented with abdominal pain and was diagnosed as abdominal cocoon at laparotomy;and another 81 years old female, a case of sigmoid cancer, was diagnosed at laparotomy as abdominal cocoon. In both cases membrane enclosing small intestine was excised. Histopathology of membrane was reported as fibro-collagenous tissue. Discussion: Abdominal cocoon is a rare entity, and its etiology is poorly understood. In most of cases preoperative diagnosis is not made with certainty despite of advancement in imaging. So, most of cases are diagnosed at laparotomy. Excision of membrane is the definitive treatment of abdominal cocoon. Conclusion: A high index of suspicion is required for diagnosing abdominal cocoon.

Frozen Section Analysis of Breast Lumpectomy Margins

Objectives: To evaluate breast lumpectomy margins by frozen section in breast conservation surgery. Methods: A retrospective study of frozen section of lumpectomy margins of one hundred ten patients was done at King Abdulaziz University Hospital from June 2007 to June 2013. All patients underwent lumpectomy + Sentinel lymph node biopsy. Patient records were studied for location of mass in breast, size of mass, site of breast, pre or postmenopausal, frozen section margins, new frozen section margins, permanent margins, reoperation. Complications like skin necrosis, numbness, and wound infection were studied. Result: Majority were Saudis (64.5%). Left breast was involved in 60%. Upper outer quadrant was involved in majority (51.9%). Size of mass was less than 1 cm in 14.8% cases, 1 - 2.9 cm in 43.5%, 3 - 4 cm in 13%, more than 4 cm in 10.2%. Lumpectomy plus sentinel lymph node biopsy was done in 96.4% and lumpectomy and axillary lymph node dissection was done in 1.8% cases. Gross margins were positive in 17.3% and frozen margins were positive in 28.2%. New margin on frozen section were positive in 3.6% and negative in 79.1%. Permanent section histology showed positive margins in 5.5% and negative in 94.5% cases. Re-operation was done in 7.3%. Lympho-vascular margins were positive in 20.9%. Skin necrosis was found in 2.2%, numbness was found in 4.4%, wound infection was in 2.2%. Conclusion: Lumpectomy margins with frozen section reduce re-operation and recurrence.

Cardiac index (CI) versus cardio ankle vascular index (CAVI) at different degrees of head-up tilt (HUT) in healthy subjects

The cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI) is a new index of arterial stiffness that can be measured with a VaSera VS-1000 device. An association between certain arterial stiffness indices and cardiac function has been found but has not yet been validated. The aim of this study was to establish whether any significant relationship exists between cardiac index (CI) and CAVI. Twenty healthy male volunteers with a mean age of 30 ± 5 years and a mean BMI of 23.1 ± 1.1 kg/m2 participated in the study. CO was estimated using a Doppler technique, and CAVI was measured with a VaSeraVS-1000 device. A motorised tilting table was used to achieve head-up tilt (HUT) angles of 0°, 30°and 60°, to modify the peripheral sympathetic outflow. We found that there was a significant inverse correlation between CI and the degree of head-up tilt, ( for 0°and 30°;for 0° and 60°, p for both;for 30° and 60°, ). CAVI showed a significant positive correlation relative with the degree of HUT, ( for 0° and 30°;for 0° and 60°;for 30° and 60°, for all). A significant negative correlation was found between CI and CAVI r = - 0.47, p Additionally, a significant p increase in PVR values was observed for increasing HUT values. In conclusion: An inverse relationship between CI and CAVI was shown;a decrease in cardiac output is associated with an increase in CAVI values at different degrees of HUT. This association provides further insight into the postural link between cardiac output and arterial compliance.
