Antibacterial activity of eight Iranian plant extracts against methicillin and cefixime restistant Staphylococcous aureus strains

Objective:To assess the antibacterial activity of eight Iranian plant extracts against Staphylococcus aureus(***) strains which were isolated from infected ***: The studied strains were isolated from urine,stool,blood and wound of infected patients and identified by biochemical *** further,the antibacterial activity of 8 ethanolic local plant extracts including Querqus brantii(***),Ziziphus spina-christi(***-christi),Peganum harmala(***),Oliveira decumbens(***),Galium tricornutum(***), Vitex pseudo negundo(*** negundo),Salvia officinalis(***),Vaccaria pyramidata (***) were then evaluated using agar disc diffusion ***:A total of 9 isolates were isolated and identified as *** profile of the strains showed that the strains were resistant to methicillin and *** highest antibacterial activity against the studied strains were belong to ***,***,***-christi and *** vent extracts with 11-40 mm,15-28 mm,8-26 mm and 10-20 mm of diameters,respectively. Intermediate antibacterial activity was exhibited by *** and *** negundo against some of the studied strains with 7-20 mm and 7-13 mm of diameters,respectively. Noteworthy,out of 9 studied strains;6 and 2 of them were resistant to the *** and Vi. pseudo negundo extracts,*** *** and ***,however,showed no antibacterial activity against the studied ***:The ***,***,Z. spina-christi and *** extracts were shown to possess strong antibacterial activity against methicillin and cefixime resistant *** strains and can be considered as the promising natural antibiotics for treating the studied strains.

Brucellosis, a zoonosis caused by four species of brucella, has a high morbidity. Brucella melitensis is the main causative agent of brucellosis in both human and small ruminants. As an alternative to conventional antibiotics, medicinal plants are valuable resources for new agents against antibiotic-resistant strains. The aim of this study was to investigate the usage of native plants for brucellosis treatment. For this purpose, the anti-brucella activities of ethanolic and methanolic extracts of Salvia sclarea, Oliveria decumbens, Ferulago angulata, Vitex pseudo-negundo, Teucrium polium, Plantago ovata, Cordia myxa, and Crocus sativus were assessed. The activity against a resistant Br. melitensis strain was determined by disc diffusion method at various concentrations from 50-400 mg/ml. Antibiotic discs were also used as a control. Among the evaluated herbs, six plant (Salvia sclarea, Oliveria decumbens, Ferulago angulata, Vitex pseudo-negundo, Teucrium polium, and Crocus sativus) showed anti-brucella activity. Oliveria de- cumbens was chosen as the most effective plant for further studies. A tested isolate exhibited resistance to tetracycline, nafcillin, oxacillin, methicillin, and colistin. Minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimal bactericidal concentration (MBC) values for Oliveria decumbens against resistant Br. melitensis were the same (5 mg/ml), and for gentamicin they were both 2 mg/ml. Time-kill kinetics for a methanolic extract of Oliveria decumbens was 7 h whereas for an ethanolic extract it was 28 h. Also, Oliveria decumbens extracts showed a synergistic effect in combination with doxycycline and tetracycline. In general, the similar values of MIC and MBC for Oliveria decumbens suggest that these extracts could act as bactericidal agents against Br. melitensis. In addition to Oliveria decumbens, Crocus sativus and Salvia sclarea also had good anti-brucella activity and these should be considered for further study.

Nanofluid is a suspension of nanoparticles(solid particles with diameters below 100 nm)in a conventional base fluid with significantly improved heat transfer characteristics compared to the original *** heat transfer coefficient is a quantitative characteristic of the convective heat *** purpose of this paper is to study the effect of the nanoparticle size(diameter)on the heat transfer coefficient of forced convective heat transfer of nanofluid in the fully developed laminar region of a horizontal *** thermal conductivity model which is a function of the nanoparticle size,flow of a nanofluid(water+Al2O3)in a circular tube submitted to a constant wall temperature is numerically investigated with two particle sizes of 11 nm and 47 *** calculated results show that the nanoparticle size does not significantly affect the heat transfer coefficient,however,the heat transfer coefficient decreases as the particle size increases.

Objective:To search for antimicrobial agents among natural ***:Ethanolic extracts of 4 plant species,including Beta vulgaris L.(Chenopodiaceae),Amaranthus graecizans (***) L.(Amaranthaceae),Rumex obtusifolius(***) *** Polygonum patulum(***) M.B.(Polygonaceae),were evaluated for antibacterial activity using agar disc diffusion method against some gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria[Pseudomonas aeruginosa(***),Listeria monocytogenes(***).Staphylococcus epidermidis(***),Staphylococcus aureus(***),Klebsiella pneumoniae(K. pneumoniae),Salmonella typhi(***),Bacillus cereus(***).Bacillus anthracis(B. anthracis),Escherichia coli(***) and Streptococcus pyogenes(***)].These extracts were obtained from aerial parts of the used ***:The majority of these extracts had inhibitory effect at different concentrations(0.05 g/mL,0.10 g/mL,0.20 g/mL and 0.40 g/mL) against above mentioned *** was the most resistant *** highest inhibitory zone was showed by ethanolic extract of *** against ***(28 mm) and followed by ethanolic extract of *** against ***(23 mm).The extract of *** didn’t show inhibitory activity except at 0.40 g/mL against *** minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration(MBC) values of *** extract that was measured against *** were equal(MIC=MBC=5.00mg/mL).Conclusion: The findings of this study could also be as new source for antibiotics discovery and infection treatment.

Objective:To guide for selection of plants with antibacterial activity for further phytochemical works on the isolation and identification of the active ***:Ethanolic extracts of 3 species from Malvaceae family were evaluated by agar disc diffusion method for antibacterial activity against some gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria(Pseudomonas aeruginosa,Listeria monocytogenes,Staphylococcus *** aureus, Klebsiella *** typhi,Bacillus *** anthracis,Escherichia coli and Streptococcus pyogenes).The extracts were obtained from aerial parts of Hibiscus rosa(H. rosa)-sinensis(leaf and flower),Alcea rosea(***) L.(leaf and flower) and Malva neglecta(M. neglecta) Wallr(flower).Results:These extracts had inhibitory effects at different concentrations (0.05,0.10,0.20 and 0.40 g/mL) against above mentioned *** coli was the most resistant *** highest inhibitory zone was showed by ethanolic extract of *** against Staphylococcus epidermidis(22 mm) and followed by ethanolic extract from flower of *** against Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus aureus(20 mm).The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration(MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration(MBC) values against Staphylococcus epidermidis were equal(M1C=MBC=5 mg/mL for *** extract and for H. rosa extract MIC=MBC=20 mg/mL).Conclusions:These findings suggest that these native plants have good antibacterial properties that can be used for infection control and treatment and could also be as new source for antibiotics discovery and infection treatment.

Objective: To recognize and screen common mental disorders in elderlies and determine their relationship with social support in Shiraz, Iran. Methods: In this cross-sectional analytical study, 400 elderlies aged >60 years from Shiraz were selected through stratified random sampling. Data collection was done by 3 demographic data, Medical Outcome Study (MOS), social support, and standardization of mental disorders symptoms checklist 90 (SCL-90) questionnaires. The collected data were analyzed with SPSS 22, using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficient, and univariate and multivariate linear regression analyses. A P value <0.05 was regarded as statistically significant. Results: A total of 400 elderlies (mean age = 67.39 ± 6.89), among whom 204 individuals were female (51%), participated in the study. Somatization and phobic anxiety were the most (68.9%) and least (14.2%) prevalent disorders, respectively. The average total score of social support was 85.59 + 3.5. Social support and its 5 subscales showed statistically significant negative correlation with SCL-90 total scores and its 9 domains (P < 0.05). A 1-point increase in social support score results in reduction in the psychological disorders score by 0.35 point (P < 0.001). Conclusions: It seems necessary to plan and make policies by the authorities to increase social support and reduce the burden of common mental disorders in the elderly.

Effect of Tillage and Planting Methods on the Soil Properties, Grain Drill Performance, and Wheat Yield

The effect of conservation tillage methods and seeding machines on the soil physical properties, performance of grain drill, wheat yield, and wheat yield components was evaluated. The research was conducted in a split block experimental design with twelve treatments and four replications, and a local wheat variety （Shiraz） was planted in this study. Main plots were tillage methods including：（1） primary tillage using moldboard plow without moldboard; （2） primary tillage with disk harrow; and （3） primary tillage with chisel plow. Subplots were grain drill types including：（1） planting with Taka grain drill without furrower; （2） planting with Taka grain drill having furrower; （3） planting with Hamadan Machine Barzegar grain drill having furrower and runner opener; 4） planting with grain drill having ripple opener. Parameters including mean weight diameter of clods （MWD）, soil bulk density, uniformity of seed planting depth, seed distribution uniformity, seed emergence, crop yield, and crop yield components were measured. SAS software was used to analyze the collected data and the method of benefit to cost ratio was used to compare the treatments from the economic point of view. Results indicated that tillage method had no significant effect （P = 0.05） on the measured parameters. Plant per unit area, seed emergence, uniformity of seed planting depth, and MWD were significantly affected by the grain drill type （P 〈 0.05） while, the type of grain drill had no significant effect on the rest of measured parameters. Taka grain drill without furrower had the highest uniformity of planting depth and proper soil MWD, and grain drill with ripple opener had the highest seed emergence and plant per unit area. Interaction between tillage methods and grain drill types affected the soil MWD, seed emergence, and crop yield （P 〈 0.05） in such a way that the combination of primary tillage with disk harrow and planting with grain drill having ripple opener provided the highest crop yiel
