Ductal adenocarcinoma of the pancreas is a lethal cancer for which the only chance of long-term survival belongs to the patient with localized disease in whom a potentially curative resection can be done. Therefore, biomarkers for early detection and new therapeutic strategies are urgently needed. miRNAs are a recently discovered class of small endogenous non-coding RNAs of about 22 nucleotides that have gained attention for their role in downregulation of mRNA expression at the post-transcriptional level. miRNAs regulate proteins involved in critical cellular processes such as differentiation, proliferation, and apoptosis. Evidence suggests that deregulated miRNA expression is involved in carcinogenesis at many sites, including the pancreas. Aberrant expression of miRNAs may upregulate the expression of oncogenes or downregulate the expression of tumor suppressor genes, as well as play a role in other mechanisms of carcinogenesis. The purpose of this review is to summarize our knowledge of deregulated miRNA expression in pancreatic cancer and discuss the implication for potential translation of this knowledge into clinical practice.

Chronic infection with hepatitis B virus (HBV) leads to the development of hepatocellular carcinoma and/or chronic liver failure. Despite extensive research, the immunopathogenesis is not completely understood. Viral persistence and clinical outcomes following HBV infection depend on viral factors and host factors; including genetic factors that determine a host’s immune mechanisms. The primary goal of chronic hepatitis B (CHB) treatment is to eradicate HBV or to at least maintain suppression of HBV replication. Despite recent advances in anti-viral agents for chronic HBV infection, complete eradication of the virus has been difficult to achieve. Agents for the treatment of CHB are divided mainly into two groups: immunomodulating agents and antiviral nucleos(t)ide analogues (NAs). Although NAs are safe, effective and easily administered orally, their long-term use poses the risk of drug resistance. Currently, international evidence-based guidelines have been developed to support physicians in managing CHB patients. However, treatment of patients with drug resistance is still challenging, as only a few classes of anti-HBV drugs are available and cross-resistance between drugs can occur. In addition, as the currently available genotypic test for detection of drug resistance still has limitations in identifying the different substitutions present in the same viral genome, the development of a new virologic test to overcome this limitation is necessary. Among the predictive factors associated with response to pegylated interferon (PEG-IFN) therapy, hepatitis B surface antigen quantification is considered to be a surrogate marker for monitoring response to PEG-IFN. Current practice guidelines stress the importance of profound and durable HBV viral suppression in the treatment of CHB patients. The antioxidant and anticorrosive effect of Tragia involucrate L.(T. involucrate L.) was evaluated to aid in finding new compounds which can be used for various purposes. The total phenolic(TPC) and flavonoid content(TFC),antioxidant activity(DPPH, reducing potential and phosphomolybdenum), and electrochemical measurements,Fourier transform infrared(FT-IR), UV–visible(UV–vis) spectral analysis, scanning electron microscopy/energydispersive X-ray spectroscopy(SEM–EDX) and atomic force microscopy(AFM) were done to analyze the potency and also the inhibition efficiency of T. involucrate L. against 1 mol·L^(-1) HCl on low carbon steel. The TPC(145.21 mg GAE·g^(-1)), TFC(52.32 mg QCE·g^(-1)) and antioxidant activities were found to be significant. The electrochemical studies performed by AC impedance measurements showed significant changes in impedance spectra without causing any change in Nyquist plots. An increase in charge transfer resistance(Rct) values, a blockage in active sites exhibiting cathodic and anodic inhibition shows the action of inhibitor on low carbon steel. This was later confirmed by FT-IR and UV–vis which showed variation in absorption band at 270 nm and273 nm(before immersion) and 208 and 281 nm(after immersion). The same was tested again by SEM–EDX through altered strength of iron and oxygen bands and using AFM by analyzing the change in average roughness values of low carbon steel before(61.65 nm) and after(97.87 nm) exposure to blank acid without inhibitor, while it was shifted to 81.58 nm in acid with inhibitor. All these results showed strong evidence adding values to T. involucrate L. plant extract in inhibiting corrosion on low carbon steel and by promoting antioxidant importance of the extract which helps in scavenging free radicals.

Background: The recently proposed definition of metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease(MAFLD) is based on the co-existence of hepatic steatosis with other metabolic disorders, including obesity and metabolic risk abnormalities such as hyperglycemia, high blood pressure and dyslipidemia. This study aimed to assess MAFLD severity according to the presence of metabolic abnormalities and obesity. Methods: Using transient elastography, hepatic steatosis and fibrosis severity were assessed by measuring the controlled attenuation parameter and liver stiffness measurement. A total of 1163 patients with MAFLD were categorized into the following four groups according to metabolic risk abnormalities and obesity presence: non-obese without metabolic risk abnormality group(Group 1;reference group);nonobese with metabolic risk abnormality group(Group 2);obese without metabolic risk abnormality group(Group 3);and obese with metabolic risk abnormality group(Group 4). A multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to determine severe hepatic steatosis and fibrosis risk in each group in both unadjusted and adjusted models. Results: In the adjusted model, the odds ratios(ORs) [95% confidence interval(CI)] for severe hepatic steatosis in Groups 2, 3, and 4 were 1.07(0.61-1.88), 2.43(1.44-4.08), and 4.07(2.56-6.48), respectively( P trend < 0.001). For liver fibrosis, compared with Group 1, Group 2 showed no significant increases in OR, whereas Groups 3 and 4(obese groups) showed significant increases(OR = 4.70, 95% CI: 1.24-17.82 and OR = 6.43, 95% CI: 1.88-22.02, respectively). Conclusions: Obesity, rather than metabolic abnormality, is the principal determinant of severe hepatic steatosis and fibrosis in patients with MAFLD.

In this study, chlorine decay experiments were conducted for the raw water from Nakdong River that is treated by Chllseo Water Treatment Plant （CWTP） situated in Haman, Korea as well as the effluents from sand and granular activated carbon （GAC） filters of CWTP and fitted using a chlorine decay model. The model estimated the fast and slow reacting nitrogenous as well as organic/inorganic compounds that were present in the water. It was found that the chlorine demand due to fast and slow reacting （FRA and SRA） organic/inorganic substances was not reduced significantly by sand as well as GAC filters. However, the treated effluents from those filters contained FRA and SRA that are less reactive and had small reaction rate constants. For the effluents from microfiltration, ultrafiltration, and nanofiltration the chlorine demand because FRA and SRA were further reduced but the reaction rate constants were larger compared to those of sand and GAC filter effluents. This has implications in the formation of disinfection by products （DBPs）. If DBPs are assumed to form due to the interactions between chlorine and SRA, then it is possible that the DBP formation potential in the effluents from membrane filtrations could be higher than that in the effluents from granular media filters.

AIM： To determine the prognostic significance of isolated tumor cells （ITCs） and lymph node micrometastases in gastric cancer. METHODS： Hematoxylin and eosin-stained slides of lymph node dissections of 632 consecutive gastric cancers were reviewed. Cytokeratin immunostaining was performed in 280 node-negative cases and 5 cases indefinite for lymph node metastases. Lymph node metastases were divided into ITCs, micrometastases, or macrometastases, according to the sizes of tumor deposits in largest dimension. ITCs were further classified into four groups according to metastasis pattern. RESULTS： Lymph node metastases were identified by immunostaining in 58 of 280 node-negative cases （20.7%） and were not significantly associated with patient survival （P = 0.3460）. After cytokeratin immunostaining, 196 cases were classified as pN1, which consisted of 20 cases with micrometastases detected by immunostaining （pNlmi（i＋））, 34 cases with only micrometastases （pNlmi）, and 142 cases with pN1 with one or more macrometastases （pN1）. Cases with pNlmi and pNlmi（i＋） had a significantly better prognosis than the cases with pN1 （P = 0.0037）. ITCs were found in 38 of these 58 cases, and could be divided into four groups： 12 cases with only a single cell pattern, 7 cases with multiple individual cells, 5 cases with single small cluster, and 14 cases with multiple small clusters. Among these four groups, cases with ITCs of multiple individual cell pattern showed the worst survival （median survival： 28 mo, P〈0.0001）.CONCLUSION： Both size and pattern of lymph node metastases can give prognostic information on the survival of gastric cancer patients.

This work proposes a map-based control method to improve a vehicle's lateral stability, and the performance of the proposed method is compared with that of the conventional model-referenced control method. Model-referenced control uses the sliding mode method to determine the compensated yaw moment; in contrast, the proposed map-based control uses the compensated yaw moment map acquired by vehicle stability analysis. The vehicle stability region is calculated by a topological method based on the trajectory reversal method. A 2-DOF vehicle model and Pacejka's tire model are used to evaluate the proposed map-based control method. The properties of model-referenced control and map-based control are compared under various road conditions and driving inputs. Model-referenced control uses a control input to satisfy the linear reference model, and it generates unnecessary tire lateral forces that may lead to worse performance than an uncontrolled vehicle with step steering input on a road with a low friction coefficient. However, map-based control determines a compensated yaw moment to maintain the vehicle within the stability region,so the typical responses of vehicle enable to converge rapidly. The simulation results with sine and step steering show that map-based control provides better the tracking responsibility and control performance than model-referenced control.

To improve watertightness and antibiosis of sewage structure concrete, the antimicrobial watertight admixture was made with fluosilicate salts and antimicrobial compounds. And fresh properties, watertightness, harmlessness and antibiosis of concrete were investigated experimentally. As a result, the fresh properties of concrete were similar to those of an ordinary concrete, without setting time delay. Compressive strength and carbonation resistance of concrete were better than those of an ordinary concrete. Finally it was confirmed that the antimicrobial watertight admixture of concrete had an antibiosis inhibiting SOB growth.
