Normal lung CT texture features have been used for the prediction of radiation-induced lung disease (RILD). For these features to be clinically useful, they should be robust to tumor size variations and not correlated with the normal lung volume of interest, i.e., the volume of the peri-tumoral region (PTR). CT images of 14 lung cancer patients were studied. Different sizes of gross tumor volumes (GTVs) were simulated and placed in the lung contralateral to the tumor. 27 texture features [nine from intensity histogram, eight from the gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) and ten from the gray-level run-length matrix (GLRM)] were extracted from the PTR. The Bland-Altman analysis was applied to measure the normalized range of agreement (nRoA) for each feature when GTV size varied. A feature was considered as robust when its nRoA was less than the threshold (100%). Sixteen texture features were identified as robust. None of the robust features was correlated with the volume of the PTR. No feature showed statistically significant differences (P 0.05) on GTV locations. We identified 16 robust normal lung CT texture features that can be further examined for the prediction of RILD.

Circadian clocks mediate adaptation to the 24-h world. In Arabidopsis, most circadian-clock components act in the nucleus as transcriptional regulators and generate rhythmic oscillations of transcript accumulation. In this review, we focus on post-transcriptional events that modulate the activity of circadian-clock components, such as phosphorylation, ubiquitination and proteasome-mediated degradation, changes in cellular localization, and protein-protein interactions. These processes have been found to be essential for circadian function, not only in plants, but also in other circadian systems. Moreover, light and clock signaling networks are highly interconnected. In the nucleus, light and clock compo- nents work together to generate transcriptional rhythms, leading to a general control of the timing of plant physiological processes.

The doctrine of＇the golden mean＇ of the Confucian certainly applies at the molecular level to cell growth and migration. It is critically important for tissue architecture and homeostasis that cells stop prolifera- tion when reaching appropriate density and halt migration in a direction to avoid collision with others. This ＇red light＇ to hinder cell movement is essential for maintaining contact inhibition of locomotion （CIL）--a phe- nomenon that a cell ceases to continue moving in the same direction when it comes into contact with another cell. The concept of CIL emerged initially from the early work of Abercrombie and Heaysman in the 1950s.

The aim of this paper is to review the development and state of the art in the application of certain organosilicon compounds known as trialkoxysilanes （or simply silanes） to the problems of the metal finishing industry. Genetic transformation is a useful technique to complement conventional breeding in crop improvement. Although carrot has been a model organism for in vitro embryogenesis study, genetic transformation of carrot is still lengthy and labor intensive. An efficient transformation and detection system is desirable. Direct infection of Agrobacterium to carrot calli has provided an easy way for carrot genetic transformation. To improve the efficiency of antibiotic selection in this method, we report the combined use of an improved green-fluorescent protein, referred to as smGFP, to establish a versatile selection method for carrot callus transformation system. By combining antibiotic selection with the bright fluorescence observed in the callus tissue, we were able to easily identify stable transformants in early stage of the transformation process. In addition to the GFP expression of the callus cells, the transgenic nature of callus cells was confirmed with Southern and Western analysis. We found we can link the simplicity of carrot-callus-cell transformation, early detection of stable transformants with antibiotic selection, visualization of GFP fluorescence, and molecular analysis （Southern and Western） of callus tissue （non-photosynthetic tissue） to provide a more efficient way in identifying stable transformants at early stage of carrot transformation.

We present a large sample of candidate galaxies at z ≈ 7 - 10, selected in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field using the new observations of the Wide Field Camera 3 that was recently installed on the Hubble Space Telescope. Our sample is composed of 20 z850-dropouts （four new discoveries）, 15 Y105-dropouts （nine new discoveries） and 20 j.25-dropouts （all new discoveries）. The surface densities of the Z850-dropouts are close to what was predicted by earlier studies, however, those of the Y105- and j.25-dropouts are quite unexpected. While no Y105- or j.25-dropouts have been found at AB ≤ 28.0 mag, their surface densities seem to increase sharply at fainter levels. While some of these candidates seem to be close to foreground galaxies and thus could possibly be gravitationally lensed, the overall surface densities after excluding such cases are still much higher than what would be expected if the luminosity function does not evolve from z ～ 7 to 10. Motivated by such steep increases, we tentatively propose a set of Schechter function parameters to describe the luminosity functions at z ≈8 and 10. As compared to their counterpart at z ≈ 7, here L^＊ decreases by a factor of ～ 6.5 and Ф^＊ increases by a factor of 17-90. Although such parameters are not yet demanded by the existing observations, they are allowed and seem to agree with the data better than other alternatives. If these luminosity functions are still valid beyond our current detection limit, this would imply a sudden emergence of a large number of low-luminosity galaxies when looking back in time to z ≈ 10, which, while seemingly exotic, would naturally fit in the picture of the cosmic hydrogen reionization. These early galaxies could easily account for the ionizing photon budget required by the reionization, and they would imply that the global star formation rate density might start from a very high value at z ≈ 10, rapidly reach the minimum at z≈ 7, and start to rise again towards z ≈ 6.
