Repeated cupping manipulation temporary decreases natural killer lymphocyte frequency, activity and cytotoxicity

OBJECTIVE： Elevated natural killer lymphocyte cytotoxicity（NKc） has been linked with reproductive problems in women. Here we evaluate the potential benefit of cupping therapy（CT） in reproductionrelated immune ***： This was a pilot clinical study. Participants were he althy fe male volunteers（n = 23） with elevated NKc, and received repeated CT 3 times over 5 d（inner pressure 40–50 kPa, 40 min; 12–1 5 cups）. Lymphocyte subsets, NKc and NK lymphocyte activity（NKa） were measured in blood on day 0（initial levels, before the first treatment） and days 3, 10 and 17 after the last CT treatment, using the K562-stimulated CD69 expression ***： As a result of CT manipulations NKa was reduced on days 3 and 10, and NK percentage was reduced on day 10. NKc was most sensitive to CT treatment, resulting in their decreased counts at 3, 10 and 17 d post CT. CT treatment decreased NKc in the majority of individuals（87%）, but the magnitude of the effect was variable. Out of 23 subjects 9（39.1%） had a 2–3 fold decrease of NKc on days 3, 10 and 17; 11（47.8%） started to show a decrease in NKc later, or more quickly returned to base levels; and only 3（13%） subjects displayed no effect of CT on NKc. Expectedly, no changes in T-cell subsets（CD3CD4, CD3CD8, HLADR, CD158a） were observed after ***： CT decreased NK cell numbers, their activity and cytotoxicity. Low cost, safety, noninvasive nature and ease of administration make CT a promising approach for NKc down-regulation.

Whilst it has long been known that disorder profoundly affects transport properties,recent measurements on a series of solid solution 3d-transition metal alloys reveal two orders of magnitude variations in the residual *** ab initio methods,we demonstrate that,while the carrier density of all alloys is as high as in normal metals,the electron mean-free-path can vary from~10Å(strong scattering limit)to~103Å(weak scattering limit).Here,we delineate the underlying electron scattering mechanisms responsible for this disparate *** site-diagonal,spin dependent,potential scattering is always dominant,for alloys containing only Fe,Co,and Ni the majority-spin channel experiences negligible disorder scattering,thereby providing a short circuit,while for Cr/Mn containing alloys both spin channels experience strong disorder scattering due to an electron filling *** surprisingly,other scattering mechanisms-including displacement,or size effect,scattering which has been shown to strongly correlate with such diverse properties as yield strength—are found to be relatively weak in most cases.

An investigation of hydrotalcite-derived ternary Mg-Al-Ce oxides as catalysts for vapour phase condensation of ethanol to 1-butanol in a flow reactor under atmospheric pressure was carried *** Mg-Al-Ce oxide systems with Mg/(Al+Ce)ratio from 1 to 4 were synthesized and characterized by XRD,SEM,NMR,and *** study of acid-base characteristics of the systems with different Mg/(Al+Ce)ratio by NH3/CO_(2)quasi-equilibrium thermal desorption techniques shows that the ratio of the catalyst oxide components(Mg,Al,Ce)can provide acid/base capacity ratio close to 3 for the effectivity of the target *** highest selectivity 68%is reached over Mg-Al-Ce oxide catalyst with the ratio of Mg/(Al+Ce)=2.

It has been theoretically predicted that under conditions leading to Gibbs-Donnan equilibrium in case when size of one compartment is very different from another (as in system “membrane vesicle/liposomes—incubation medium”) stable transmembrane potential can be formed, which value is sufficient to fit requirement of real transmembrane potential. Four partial cases were considered with different location and charge of impermeable ion and it was concluded that locations of impermeable ions in medium provide stable transmembrane potential with sufficient value of 60 - 70 mV. Potential-sensitive probe, such as DiOC6(3) and oxonol VI, were used to confirm the calculated potential. According to the change in fluorescence level and emission/excitation shift, a stable and relatively high transmembrane potential can be formed if salt of impermeable ion is located in incubation medium. Impermeable cations and anions may be used to create positive and negative transmembrane potential respectively.

This study aims to find appropriate locations for wind farms that can maximize the overall energy output while controlling the effects of wind speed *** wind speeds are required to obtain the maximum possible power output of a wind farm. However, balancing the wind energy supplies over time by selecting diverse locations is necessary. These issues are addressed using network-based models. Hence, actual wind speed data are utilized to demonstrate the advantages of the proposed approach.

Sustainable Land Management: Growing Miscanthus in Soils Contaminated with Heavy Metals

Miscanthus grows well in some marginal and contaminated soils, and it has the potential to be used as a biofuel. Copper and cobalt are heavy metals that sometimes are present as contaminants in soils at concentrations that may impact the safety of products that are harvested. Laboratory research has been conducted with Miscanthus sacchariflorus M. to investigate metal uptake of copper and cobalt because metal concentrations in the harvested parts of miscanthus are important for biofuel applications. The results show that the use of miscanthus for biofuel from soil contaminated by heavy metals depends mainly on the nature of contaminated metals: cobalt was detected only for highest treated concentration of metal and mainly in the roots. The highest concentration of copper was detected in the roots however this metal was detected in stems and leaves of miscanthus as well. Miscanthus biomass harvested from cobalt contaminated soil may be used for energy production because the harvested part accumulated only limited traces of the metal. The experimental results are in reasonable agreement with other results from the literature.
