AIM： To study of the effect of caffeic acid phenethyl ester （CAPE） on the initiation period in a medium-term assay of hepatocarcinogenesis. METHOdS： Male Wistar rats were subjected to a carcinogenic treatment （CT） and sacrificed at 25^th d; altered hepatic foci （AHF） were generated efficiently. To a second group of rats a single 20 mg/kg doses of CAPE was given 12 h before initiation with CT and were sacrificed at 25^th d. We evaluated the expression of preneoplastic markers as Y-glutamyltranspeptidase （GGT） and glutathione S-transferase type pi protein （GSTp） by histochemistry, RT-PCR and Western blot analyses, respectively. We measured thiobarbituric acid reactive substances （TBARS） in homogenates of liver and used Unscheduled dNA Synthesis （UdS） assay by incorporation of [^3H] thymidine （^3HdT） in primary hepatocyte cultures （PHC）. RESULTS： At 25^th d after CT CAPE reduced the observed increase of GGT^＋AHF by 84% and liver expression ofggt mRNA by 100%. In case of the GSTp protein, the level was reduced by 90%. As indicative of oxidative stress generated by diethylnitrosamine （dEN） 12 h after its administration, we detected a 68% increase of TBARS. When CAPE was administered before dEN, it completely protected from liver TBARS induction. To have an indication of the sole effect of CAPE on initiation, two carcinogens were tested in a UdS assay in PHC, we used methyl-n-nitrosoguanidine as a direct carcinogen and dEN, as indirect carcinogen. In this assay, genotoxic damage caused by carcinogens was abolished at 5μM CAPE concentration. CONCLUSION： Our results demonstrated that CAPE possesses anti-genotoxic and antineoplastic capabilities, by an anti-oxidative and free-radical scavenging mechanism.

In recent decades,life expectancy has been increasing *** this scenario,health interventions are ne-cessary to improve prognosis and quality of life of elderly with cardiovascular risk factors and cardiovascular ***,the number of elderly patients included in clinical trials is low,thus current clinical practice guidelines do not include specific *** document aims to review prevention recommendations focused in patients≥75 years with high or very high cardiovascular risk,regarding objectives,medical treatment options and also including physical exercise and their inclusion in cardiac rehabilitation ***,we will show why geriatric syndromes such as frailty,dependence,cognitive impair-ment,and nutritional status,as well as comorbidities,ought to be considered in this population regarding their important pro-gnostic impact.

目的探讨行腹腔镜胃旁路术后病态肥胖症患者血清微量营养素的变化. 方法回顾性分析121例病态肥胖症患者腹腔镜胃旁路术后6、12、24个月血清铁（Fe）、钙（Ca）、锌（Zn）、硒（Se）及维生素A（VitA）、维生素d（Vitd）、维生素B12（VitB12）和甲状旁腺素（PTH）水平的变化.结果本组121例病态肥胖症患者术前1个月平均体质量指数（body mass index,BMI）为（47±7）kg/m^2,术后6个月平均BMI为（34±6）kg/m^2,术后BMI平均下降（13±5）kg/m^2（P＜0.01）.在术后的2年随访中,血清Fe、Ca、Zn、Se、VitA、Vitd、VitB12均在正常范围.虽然一些患者的血清Zn、Se和VitA水平偏低,但接近正常.而血清PTH始终高于正常水平,术后6、12、24个月分别升高了（22±34）pg/ml、（28±34）pg/ml、（31±40）pg/ml（P＜0.05）.结论本研究证明腹腔镜胃旁路手术治疗病态肥胖症患者是有效、安全的,但术后患者血清Ca、Zn、Se代谢及PTH水平有所改变.因此,建议所有腹腔镜胃旁路手术患者术后长期服用多种维生素和矿物质补充剂.

Research in different areas of orthopedic and trauma surgery requires a methodology that allows both a more economic approach and the ability to reproduce different situations in an easy way. Simulation models have been introduced recently in bioengineering and could become an essential tool in the study of any physiological unity, regardless of its complexity. The main problem in modeling with finite elements simulation is to achieve an accurate reproduction of the anatomy and a perfect correlation of the different structures, in any region of the human body. Authors have developed a mixed technique, joining the use of a three-dimensional laser scanner Roland Picza captured together with computed tomography(CT) and 3d CT images, to achieve a perfect reproduction of the anatomy. Finite element(FE) simulation lets us know the biomechanical changes that take place after hipprostheses or osteosynthesis implantation and biological responses of bone to biomechanical changes. The simulation models are able to predict changes in bone stress distribution around the implant, so allowing preventing future pathologies. The development of a FE model of lumbar spine is another interesting application of the simulation. The model allows research on the lumbar spine, not only in physiological conditions but also simulating different load conditions, to assess the impact on biomechanics. different degrees of disc degeneration can also be simulated to determine the impact on adjacent anatomical elements. Finally, FE models may be useful to test different fixation systems, i.e., pedicular screws, interbody devices or rigid fixations compared with the dynamic ones. We have also developed models of lumbar spine and hip joint to predict the occurrence of osteoporotic fractures, based on densitometric determinations and specific biomechanical models, including approaches from damage and fracture mechanics. Water stress is likely the most important factor that adversely affects plant growth and development. In our study two inbred lines of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) with contrasting behavior to water deficit, the inbred lines B59, sensitive, and B71, tolerant, were subjected to water stress and compared in terms of growth parameters, relative water content, photosynthetic pigments and osmo-compatibles contents. Mannitol treatment generated a moderate water stress which resulted in a relative water content decline in both lines. In aerial part of B59 and B71 stressed-seedlings, a dramatic reduction of osmotic potential was observed, although in B71 the osmotic potential was 1.8-fold lower than in B59. The B71 line recovered the osmotic potential to control values after 8 d of re-watering. Several morphological parameters were altered by the water stress. Shoot and root relative fresh weight decreased in both lines under water stress, although B71 showed a minor drop. However, the root was less affected than the shoot in stress condition and recovery period. Water stress was affected in a greater proportion shoot dry weight (dW) than root dW in B59 and B71 lines. Nevertheless, a significant increase in root dW/shoot dW ratio was observed in stressed seedlings. A higher reduction in the individual leaf area was observed in B71 line under stress. The basal chlorophyll content was higher in the tolerant line B71 than in the sensitive B59, and carotenoids showed a high content in B71 control and stressed seedlings. Under water stress, the aerial and root proline content increased in the tolerant B71 line. Glycinebetaine decreased significantly in the aerial part of both lines in response to water stress indicating that this compound is not the main osmo-regulator. In conclusion, B71 has suitable mechanisms to enable it to respond more effectively to moderate water stress.

There is much literature on the effects of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) on respiratory and cardiovascular health. However, few studies have evaluated the impact of PM2.5 on a population living in the vicinity of a massive deposit of mine tailings. A longitudinal panel study was performed to evaluate the association between exposure to PM2.5 and acute effects on lung function in schoolchildren from November 2012 to May 2013. Ambient levels of PM2.5 and its metal composition were measured. Lung function was evaluated using spirometric testing. Associations were quantified using GEE multilevel analysis controlling for confounders by using different lag time periods. The chemical characterization of PM2.5 had high levels of S > Na > Cl > Ca > Si > Fe > Al > Mg > K > Cu > Ti > and Zn, which would be associated with metals present in tailings. We found a negative association between the temporal variation of PM2.5 and changes in lung function specifically on forced vital capacity. Our results suggest that schoolchildren exposed to fine particulate matter from tailings deposited in the bay of Chanaral have their forced vital capacity decreased, which would affect their present and future lung development, increasing the risk of developing chronic respiratory diseases.
