The disability,mortality and costs due to ionizing radiation(IR)-induced osteoporotic bone fractures are sub-stantial and no effective therapy *** radiation increases cellular oxidative damage,causing an imbalance in bone turnover that is primarily driven via heightened activity of the bone-resorbing *** demonstrate that rats exposed to sublethal levels of IR develop fragile,osteoporotic *** reactive surface sites,cerium ions have the ability to easily undergo redox cycling:drastically adjusting their electronic con-figurations and versatile catalytic *** properties make cerium oxide nanomaterials *** show that an engineered artificial nanozyme composed of cerium oxide,and designed to possess a higher fraction of trivalent(Ce^(3+))surface sites,mitigates the IR-induced loss in bone area,bone architecture,and *** investigations also demonstrate that our nanozyme furnishes several mechanistic avenues of protection and selectively targets highly damaging reactive oxygen species,protecting the rats against IR-induced DnA damage,cellular senescence,and elevated osteoclastic activity in vitro and in ***,we reveal that our nanozyme is a previously unreported key regulator of osteoclast formation derived from macrophages while also directly targeting bone progenitor cells,favoring new bone formation despite its exposure to harmful levels of IR in *** findings open a new approach for the specific prevention of IR-induced bone loss using synthesis-mediated designer multifunctional nanomaterials.

Corrosion Behavior of Reactive Sputtered Al_2O_3 and ZrO_2 Thin Films on Mg Disk Immersed in Saline Solution

Magnesium has attracted a lot of attention over the last few decades due to its light weight and potential use as biomaterial However, the poor corrosion resistance of magnesium restricts its practical use for ap- plication where exposure to aggressive aqueous media is unavoidable. This paper describes the growth, characterization and corrosion analyses of Al2O3 and ZrO2 thin film coatings aimed at slowing down the fast degradation of Mg in saline solution. In this study, different thicknesses of Al2O3 and ZrO2 were de- posited on pure magnesium （99.95%） disk using pulsed-DC reactive sputtering process. The microstructure and phase analyses were performed using scanning electron microscopy （SEM） and X-ray diffraction （XRD）, respectively. The corrosion protection behavior of the Al2O3 and ZrO2 coated magnesium samples im- mersed in 0,9 wt% naCl solution were evaluated using electrochemical measurement techniques, such as open-circuit potential （OCP）, potentiodynamic polarization （PD） and electrochemical impedance spectros- copy （EIS）. The microstructural analyses showed that the Al2O3 thin film coatings have circular grains between 5 and 25 nm, while the ZrO2 coatings have bigger ellipsoidal grains. The results from the electrochemical corrosion analyses showed that the Al2O3 coated Mg disk had corrosion resistance of approximately 3 times that of ZrO2 coated Mg disk. It was also observed that increasing the thickness of the Al2O3 coating im- proved the corrosion resistance of the Mg disk. These results suggest that Al2O3 and ZrO2 coating can be used to effectively control the fast degradation of magnesium for medical implant applications.

Structural Stability of the Financial Market Model: Continuity of Superhedging Price and Model Approximation

The present paper continues the topic of our recent paper in the same journal,aiming to show the role of structural stability in financial *** the context of financial market modeling,structural stability means that a specific“no-arbitrage”property is unaffected by small(with respect to the Pompeiu–Hausdorff metric)perturbations of the model’s *** formulate,based on our economic interpretation,a new requirement concerning“no arbitrage”properties,which we call the“uncertainty principle”.This principle in the case of no-trading constraints is equivalent to structural *** demonstrate that structural stability is essential for a correct model approximation(which is used in our numerical method for superhedging price computation).We also show that structural stability is important for the continuity of superhedging prices and discuss the sufficient conditions for this continuity.

Mathematical Modeling of Heat Transfer Processes of Coal Waste Combustion in a Chamber of Automated Energy Generating Complex

The automated energy generating complex allows obtaining heat energy from waste coal-water slurry fuel （WCF） that is a mixture of fine coal particles from coal enrichment wastes with water. The mixture is blown into the swirl chamber under the pressure through the special sprayers. The received heat energy is used in different ways. One of the important issues is to estimate the heat losses through the walls of this chamber. In this paper we solved the boundary problem of mathematical physics to estimate the temperature fields in the walls of the swirl chamber. The obtained solution allows us to estimate the heat losses through the waUs of the swid chamber. The task of the mathematical physics has been solved by a numerical finite-difference method. The method for solving this prob- lem can be used in the calculation of temperature fields and evaluation of heat losses in other thermal power units.

Phase-matched third-harmonic generation via doubly resonant optical surface modes in 1D photonic crystals

Efficient nonlinear conversion requires that interacting optical waves maintain a consistent phase relationship when traveling in a medium despite its *** phase-matching,which is often used to compensate for the dispersion,is not applicable to optically isotropic nonlinear ***,we present a one-dimensional photonic crystal structure that allows the propagation of optical surface waves,both at the fundamental and third-harmonic frequencies,as an efficient medium for phasematched third-harmonic generation.A unique advantage of this structure is that the effective refractive indices for the surface waves are similar to the refractive index of air at both *** allows phase-matching between the first and third harmonics,and a visible collinear beam of the third harmonic is produced at the prism-coupled ***,these optical surface waves propagate over long distances even if a lossy nonlinear nanofilm is deposited onto the photonic crystal *** provide experimental results for third-harmonic generation at a wavelength of 410 nm for a bare dielectric Ta2O5/SiO2 multilayer structure and for the same structure coated with a 15-nm GaAs film.

Potential role of peripheral blood mononuclear cell' s mitochondrial respiratory dysfunction in heart failure severity prediction in patients with cardioverter-defibrillator implantation indications

Background It has been reported that the mitochondrial respiratory dysfunction (MRD) is important mechanisms affecting the heart failure (HF) *** sought to evaluate the potential role of MRD of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) in HF severity prediction in patients with cardioverter-defibrillator implantation *** In this single-center study patients with HF of new York Heart Association (nYHA) Ⅰ-Ⅲ functional class (FC) and cardioverter-defibrillator implantation indications underwent transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) and MRD assessment using *** respiration rate (MRR) indicators (pyruvate+malate+adenosine diphosphate;succinate+adenosine diphosphate;pyruvate+malate–adenosine diphosphate[V4.1];succinate–adenosine diphosphate) were *** between HF nYHA FC,TTE and MRR indicators were *** on our data,we developed a risk model regarding HF *** Of 53 (100.0%) HF patients,33 (62.3%) had mild exercise intolerance (1stgroup) and 20 (37.7%) had moderate-to-severe exercise intolerance (2ndgroup).Patients with mild exercise intolerance were likely to have a higher V4.1(Pndependently associated with moderate-to-severe exercise intolerance in univariate and multivariate logistic regression (OR=0.932,95%CI:0.891–0.975,Pnclusions The severity of HF is associated with PBMC mitochondrial respiratory dysfunction in patients with cardioverter-defibrillator implantation *** HF severity risk model including V4.1parameters is able to distinguish patients with mild and moderate-to-severe exercise *** investigations of their predictive significance are warranted.

Carbon nanotube （CnT） arrays were fabricated on Ct-Me-n-（O） alloys with content of Ct in the range of 6-40 at.% by chemical vapour deposition. The Ct was a catalytic metal from the group of the following elements： ni, Co, Fe, Pd, while Me was a transition metal from the group of IV-VII of the periodic table （where Me=Ti, V, Cr, Zr, nb, Mo, Ta, W, Re）. Carbon nanotubes were found to grow efficiently on the alloy surface with its composition containing Ti, V, Cr, Zr, Hf, nb or Ta. The growth of CnTs was not observed when the alloy contained W or Re. Additions of oxygen and nitrogen in the alloy facilitated the formation of oxynitrides and catalyst extrusion on the alloy surface. Replacement of the metals in alloy composition affected the diameter of the resulting CnTs. The obtained results showed that the alloy films of varying thickness （10-500 nm） may be used for the CnTs growth. The resulting CnT material was highly homogenous and its synthesis reproducible.

In recent years,the notion of resilience has been developed and applied in many technical areas,becoming exceptionally pertinent to disaster risk *** a disaster situation,accurate sensing information is the key to efficient recovery *** general,resilience aims to minimize the impact of disruptions to systems through the fast recovery of critical functionality,but resilient design may require redundancy and could increase *** this article,we describe a method based on binary linear programming for sensor network design balancing efficiency with *** application of the developed framework is demonstrated for the case of interior building surveillance utilizing infrared sensors in both twoand three-dimensional *** method provides optimal sensor placement,taking into account critical functionality and a desired level of resilience and considering sensor type and *** problem formulation,resilience requirements,and application of the optimization algorithm are described in *** of sensor locations with and without resilience requirements shows that resilient configuration requires redundancy in number of sensors and their intelligent *** tasks are successfully solved by the described method,which can be applied to strengthen the resilience of sensor networks by *** proposed methodology is suitable for large-scale optimization problems with many sensors and extensive coverage areas.
