CT Thresholds for Spinal Bone Mineral Attenuation to Prioritize Eligible Older Women for Osteoporosis Screening

Introduction: Computed tomography (CT) measurements of bone mineral attenuation may be a useful means to identify older women who should be prioritized for bone mineral density screening. Methods: We compared bone mineral attenuation as measured in the L1 vertebra of CT studies to the results of dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) studies to determine what CT attenuation thresholds might yield a reasonable combination of sensitivity and specificity for the detection of osteoporosis. The study was limited to women between the ages of 65 and 75 years who had a DEXA study and a CT that included the L1 or adjacent vertebra performed within 3 years of the DEXA study. Results: There were 1226 women in this study, of whom 452 (38%) had osteoporosis based on a T-score ≤ −2.5 by DEXA. There were 830 CT studies performed with contrast and 396 studies which were performed without contrast. There was a statistically significant difference in the mean HU of those studies performed without contrast compared to those with contrast (unenhanced mean 103 HU versus 125 HU, p < 0.001). Different CT attenuation thresholds provided the most appropriate combination of sensitivity and specificity for the detection of osteoporosis when comparing CT studies performed without or with IV contrast and when all the CT data were used in aggregate. Conclusion: Different thresholds appear necessary when using the mean CT vertebral attenuation to identify older women for preferential referral for DEXA studies.

Tauopathies,such as Alzheimer's disease(AD),are neurodegenerative diseases characterized by the deposition of neurofibrillary tangles comprising hyperphosphorylated tau protein in the human brain.1 Given that abnormal epigenetic alterations in heterochromatin configuration have been documented in AD patients and transgenic animal models of AD,2 we investigated the roles of novel heterochromatin-associated interactors3 in *** transgenic flies via UAS-Gal4 binary system,we found that k.ock.own of Hipp1(HP1a and insulator partner protein-1)3 ***4ow(referred to as"tau"hereafter for simplicity)2-induced locomotion defects,reduced lifespan,and degeneration of brain ***,Hipp1 k.ock.own restored tau-driven aberrant expression of putative insulator targets and aberrant insulator-mediated epigenetic ***1 may have a role as an insulator-binding partner regarding being implicated in tauinduced neurodegeneration.

Significant control of metal-insulator transition temperature through catalytic excessive oxygen doping in high-performance vanadium dioxide nanobeam channel

The strategy of a reliable transition temperature control of vanadium dioxide(VO2)is *** VO2 nanobeams were synthesized by a thermal chemical vapor deposition(TCVD)*** metal-insulator transition(MIT)temperature increases to above 380k.when the TiO2 ratio of the source is 5 at.%,although the Ti source is not physically doped into VO2 *** XPS spectra of the V 2p orbital reveal the excessive oxidation of V after the TCVD processes with a higher TiO2 ratio,indicating that the TiO2 precursor is important in the O-doping of the surface V O bonds when forming volatile Ti-O gas ***,TiO2 reactants can be used as a VO2 surface chemical modifier to manipulate the MIT transition temperature and maintain a homogenous VO2 phase,which is useful for a Mott device application with a record on/off switching ratio>104 and Mott transition temperature>380 k.

Aluminum doping for optimization of ultrathin and high-k.dielectric layer based on SrTiO3

AIM: To confirm the changes in proteins related with hypoxia-induced retinal cell death and to assess the effects of resveratrol(Res).METHODS: The therapeutic effect of Res was verified using an ischemic/reperfusion(I/R) model in vivo and a hypoxia modelin retinal ganglion cells(RGCs) in *** of RGCs were confirmed by TUNEL *** expression was confirmed by Western blotting and *** addition, flow cytometric analysis was used to confirm the response in the cell unit to obtain more accurate ***: ErbB2 expression and apoptosis in the ganglion cell layer(GCL) increased after I/R *** of Res rescued I/R-induced ganglion cell death, downregulated apoptosis and ErbB2 protein expression in the *** subsequent in vitro models, Res affects apoptosis by regulating the phosphorylation and expression of mouse double minute 2 homolog(MDM2), along with those of *** results suggest that Res reverses GCL-specific apoptosis via downregulation of ErbB2 in ischemic ***: In light of Res favorable properties, it should be evaluated in the treatment of RGC death and related retinal disease characterized by ErbB2 and MDM2 ***, Res is appropriate therapeutic agent for treating ischemic injury-related eye diseases by targeting the expression of ErbB2 and MDM2.
