AIM: Oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPC), natural polyphenolic compounds found in plants, are known to have antioxidant and anti-cancer effects. We investigated whether the anti-cancer effects of the OPC are induced by apoptosis on human colorectal cancer cell line, ***: Colorectal cancer cell line, SNU-C4 was cultured in RPMI 1640 medium supplemented with 10% fetal bovine serum. The cytotoxic effect of OPC was assessed by 3-(4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 5-diphenylt-etrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. To find out the apoptotic cell death, 4, 6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) staining,terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT)-mediated dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) assay, reverse transcriptionpolymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), and caspase-3 enzyme assay were ***: In this study, cytotoxic effect of OPC on SNUC4 cells appeared in a dose-dependent manner. OPC treatment (100 μg/mL) revealed typical morphological apoptotic features. Additionally OPC treatment (100 μg/mL)increased level of BAX and CASPASE-3, and decreased level of BCL-2 mRNA expression. BACKGROUND Few studies have compared the efficacy and safety profile of a tailored eradication(TR)strategy based on the presence of a 23S ribosomal RNA point mutation with those of empirical bismuth-based quadruple therapy(EBQT)for first-line eradication of Helicobacter pylori(***)in Korean *** To compare the efficacy and safety of a TR strategy and those of EBQT regimen as first-line eradication therapy for *** This is an open-label,comparative study in which we prospectively enrolled patients over 18 years of age with *** infection and retrospectively reviewed their ***-positive patients diagnosed by rapid urease test,Giemsa staining,or dual priming oligonucleotide polymerase chain reaction(DPO-PCR)were enrolled from May 2016 to September 2018 at Gil Medical *** with *** infection received either a TR regimen or the EBQT *** the tailored therapy group that underwent DPO-PCR testing,patients with A2142G and/or A2143G point mutations were treated with a bismuth-containing quadruple *** eradication rate,patient-reported side effect rate,and *** eradication success rate were evaluated and compared between the *** A total of 150 patients were assigned to the TR(n=50)or EBQT group(n=100).The first-line eradication rate of *** did not differ between the groups(96.0%vs 95.7%,P=0.9).The rate of eradication-related side effects for TR was 12.0%,which differed significantly from that of EBQT(43.0%)for first-line treatment(P<0.001).CONCLUSION DPO-PCR-based TR for *** eradication may be equally efficacious,with less treatment-related complications,compared to EBQT in Korea,where clarithromycin resistance is high.

Litterfall, which is influenced by physical and biological factors, is a major pathway for carbon and nutrient cycling in forest ecosystems. The purpose of this study was to investigate monthly litterfall production in three forests in Jeju Island differentiated by forest composition and precipitation: Cheongsu(Quercus glauca as the dominant species;low precipitation), seonheulb(Q. glauca as the dominant species;high precipitation), and seonheulm(Q. glauca and Pinus thunbergii as the dominant species;high precipitation). Litterfall was collected monthly from April to December 2015 and divided into leaf litter, twig, bark, seeds, and unidentified *** patterns of litterfall production varied across stands according to their species composition. However,the amount of leaf litterfall and total litterfall were comparable among stands, ranging from 362 to 375 g m-2 for leaf litter and 524 g m-2 to 580 g m-2 for total *** leaf litter in May was the highest in all stands, while needle litter was the highest in December in *** twig litterfall in July may be attributable to high rainfall with strong winds and storms during the rainy season. Although forest type and climate factor had no influence on litterfall amounts in this study, the pattern of litterfall production was species dependent, suggesting diverse effects on carbon and nutrient cycling in these forests.
