Clinical outcomes of targeted therapies in elderly patients aged ≥ 80 years with metastatic colorectal cancer

BACKGROUND The 5-fluorouracil-based chemotherapy combined with oxaliplatin or irinotecan is usually used in colorectal cancer(CRC).The addition of a targeted agent(TA) to this combination chemotherapy is currently the standard treatment for metastatic ***,the efficacy and safety of combination chemotherapy for metastatic CRC in patients aged above 80 years has yet to be *** To assess the clinical outcomes and feasibility of combination chemotherapy using a TA in extremely elderly patients with *** Eligibility criteria were:(1) Age above 80 years;(2) Metastatic colorectal cancer;(3) Palliative chemotherapy na?ve;(4) Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status 0-1;and(5) Adequate organ *** received at least one dose of combination chemotherapy with or without *** was evaluated every 8 *** Of 30 patients,the median age of 15 patients treated with TA was 83.0 years and that of those without TA was 81.3 *** median progression-free survival(PFS) and overall survival(OS) in patients treated with TA were 7.4 mo and 15.4 mo,respectively,compared with 4.4 mo and 15.6 mo,respectively,in patients treated without *** was no significant difference in PFS(P:0.193) and OS(P:0.748) between patients treated with and without *** grade 3/4 hematologic toxicities were anemia(16.7%) and neutropenia(10.0%).After disease progression,the median OS of patients who were treated with and without salvage chemotherapy were 23.5 mo and 7.0 mo,respectively,suggesting significant difference in OS(P = 0.001).CONCLUSION Combination chemotherapy with TA for metastatic CRC may be considered feasible in patients aged above 80 years,when with careful *** chemotherapy can help improve OS in some selected of these elderly patients.

Generation and measurement of arbitrary four-dimensional spatial entanglement between photons in multicore fibers

High-dimensional entanglement is a valuable resource for secure and efficient quantum information processing.A major challenge for practical use of multidimensional quantum systems is the establishment of controls over arbitrary superposition states in realistic conditions. This work demonstrates spatially entangled photon pairs propagating through two separate four-core optical fibers with the amplitudes and phases of the superposition being independently controllable. Using quantum state analyzers that can detect arbitrary multicore superposition states, Bell-type CGLMP inequalities in two, three, and four dimensions are directly tested. Enhanced violation of the inequality by slight nonmaximality of entanglement is also demonstrated.

The recent trend of vehicle design aims at crash safety and environmentally-friendly aspect. For the crash safety aspect, the energy absorbing members should absorb collision energy sufficiently but for the environmentally-friendly aspect, the vehicle structure must be light weight in order to improve the fuel efficiency and reduce the tail gas emission. Therefore, the light weight of vehicle must be achieved in a securing safety status of crash. An aluminum or carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) is representative one of the light-weight materials. Based on the respective collapse behavior of aluminum and CFRP member, the collapse behavior of hybrid thin-walled member was evaluated. The hybrid members were manufactured by wrapping CFRP prepreg sheets outside the aluminum hollow members in the autoclave. Because the CFRP is an anisotropic material whose mechanical properties, such as strength and elasticity, change with its stacking condition, the effects of the stacking condition on the collapse behavior evaluation of the hybrid thin-walled member were tested. The collapse mode and energy absorption capability of the hybrid thin-walled member were analyzed with the change of the fiber orientation angle and interface number.

Clinical significance of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes for gastric cancer in the era of immunology

Immunotherapy has begun to revolutionize cancer treatment, by introducing therapies that target the host immune system instead of the tumor, therapies that possess unique adverse event profiles, and therapies that may cure certain types of cancer. The immune microenvironment of tumors is emerging as the most important means of understanding the relationship between a patient' immune system and their cancer, informing prognosis, and guiding immunotherapy, such as an antibody blockade of immune checkpoints. For some solid tumors, simple quantitation of lymphocyte infiltration would seem to have prognostic significance, suggesting that lymphocyte infiltration is not passive but may actively promote or inhibit tumor growth. For gastric cancers, several studies have provided strong evidence that immune cells contribute to determining prognosis. However, the exact role of immune cells in gastric cancer remains unclear. Therefore, this review focuses on the clinical significance of immune cells, especially tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes, in gastric cancer.

Friction and wear of textured surfaces produced by 3D printing

Surface texture patterns have great potential for improving tribological performance in terms of reducing friction and wear. The most common methods for surface texatring are laser and injection molding. The 3D printing method is also used to build parts, patterns, and molds that feature fine details for a wide range of applications because texture manufacturing by 3D printing is faster, more flexible, and less expensive than traditional techniques. To date, there has been no research on textured surfaces produced by 3D printing. Therefore, a new fabrication method using 3D printing to improve friction and wear properties is a topic worth exploring. In this study, a reciprocating friction tester was used to evaluate the friction and wear properties of different surface textures produced by 3D printing. The surface of specimens was examined by electron microscope and scanning electron microscope before and after the test. The results show that surface texturing can be applied to 3D printed parts to improve their friction and wear performance.

Polymer solar cells(PSCs)with high power conversion efficiency(PCE)and environment-friendly fabrication are the main requirements enabling their production in industrial *** the use of non-halogenated solvent processing is inevitable for the PSC fabrication,it significantly reduces the processability of polymer donors(PDS)and small-molecule acceptors(SMAs).This often results in unoptimized blend morphology and limits the device *** address this issue,hydrophilic oligoethylene glycol(OEG)side-chains are introduced into a PD(2EG)to enhance the molecular compatibility between the PD and L8-BO *** 2EG PD induces higher crystallinity and alleviates phase separation with the SMA compared to the reference PD(PM7)with hydrocarbon ***,the 2EG-based PSCs exhibit a higher PCE(15.8%)than the PM7-based PSCs(PCE=14.4%)in the ortho-xylene based ***,benefitted from the reduced phase separation and increased crystallinity of 2EG PDS,the 2EG-based PSCs show enhanced thermal stability(84%of initial PCE after 120 h heating)compared to that of the PM7-based PSCs(60%of initial PCE after 120 h heating).This study demonstrates the potential of OEG side-chain-incorporated materials in developing efficient,stable,and eco-friendly PSCs.

Symptom Experience and Quality of Life in Colorectal Cancer Patients Undergoing Chemotherapy-A Secondary Publication

Objective:To evaluate symptom experience and quality of life(QoL)and to identify the predictors of QoL among colorectal cancer patients undergoing ***:A cross-sectional study was conducted on 107 colorectal cancer patients at a university-affiliated hospital between June 1 and July 30,*** Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Colorectal(FACT-C)and Memorial Symptom Assessment Scale-Short Form(MSAS-SF)were used to assess symptom experience and QoL of these *** were analyzed using Pearson’s correlation,t-test,ANOVA,and hierarchical multiple ***:The mean QoL score for colorectal cancer patients was 88.78±*** most frequently experienced physical and psychological symptoms were numbness/tingling and *** and psychological symptoms have a significant negative association with *** economic status was significantly associated with QoL in patients’general *** regression analyses showed that high psychological symptoms(β=-0.63,P<0.001),middle perceived economic status(β=-0.22,P=0.009),and low perceived economic status(β=-0.36,P<0.001)were statistically significant in predicting patients’low ***:Symptom experience and QoL are essential variables that should be acknowledged when delivering health care to colorectal cancer *** attention to the reduction and comprehensive symptom management of psychological distress could improve QoL among colorectal cancer patients.

Development of mRNA vaccines and their prophylactic and therapeutic applications

Nucleic acid vaccines have attracted enormous attention for resolving the limitations of conventional vaccines using live attenuated viruses. Because nucleic acid vaccines can be produced rapidly in response to the emergence of new virus strains, they are more appropriate for the control of urgent epidemic and pandemic issues. In particular, messenger RNA （mRNA） vaccines have evolved as a new type of nucleic acid vaccines in accordance with their superior protein expression and a lack of mutagenesis as compared with DNA vaccines. Using mRNA vaccines, large amounts of target proteins can be expressed in immune cells for efficient immunization. For instance, antigen-specific vaccination is a feasible option involving the expression of specific antigens in antigen-presenting cells. Immunological reactions are modulated by expressing several proteins associated with stimulation or maturation of immune cells. In addition, mRNA vaccines can stimulate innate immunity through specific recognition by pattern recognition receptors. On the basis of these remarkable properties, mRNA vaccines have been used for prophylactic and therapeutic applications. This review highlights the role of mRNA vaccines as prophylactic vaccines for prevention of future infections and as therapeutic vaccines for cancer immunotherapy. In addition to the conventional type of mRNA vaccines, RNA replicons （self-amplifying mRNA vaccines） will be described.

New anti-mesenteric delta-shaped stapled anastomosis: Technical report with short-term postoperative outcomes in patients with Crohn’s disease

BACKGROUND Medical treatment for Crohn’s disease(CD)has continuously improved,which has led to a decrease in surgical recurrence *** these advancements,25%of patients will undergo repeat intestinal *** of CD com-monly occurs on the mesentery side of the anastomosis *** To compare the new anti-mesenteric side-to-side delta-shaped stapled anasto-mosis(DSA)with the conventional stapled functional end-to-end anastomosis(CSA).METHODS This retrospective study included CD patients who underwent ileo-ileal or ileo-colic anastomosis between January 2020 and December *** DSA technique employed a stapler to maintain the concept of anti-mesentery side-to-side ana-stomosis by performing a 90°vertical closure of the open window compared with the CSA *** the corner where the open window is closed,the DSA avoids forming a pouch and creates an anastomosis resembling a delta shape within the intestinal *** compared demographics,preoperative condition,operative findings,and operative outcomes for the two *** The study included 175 patients,including 92 in the DSA group and 83 in the CSA *** two groups were similar in baseline characteristics,preoperative medical treatment,and operative findings except for the Montreal classification *** 30-days postoperative complication rate was signi-ficantly lower in the DSA group compared with the CSA group(16.3%vs 32.5%,P=0.009).Ileus incidence was significantly lower in the DSA group than in the CSA group(4.3%vs 14.5%,P=0.033),and the hospital stay was shorter in the DSA group than in the CSA group(5.67±1.53 days vs 7.39±3.68 days,P=0.001).CONCLUSION The DSA technique was feasible and showed comparable postoperative outcomes with lower short-term complic-ations compared with the CSA *** studies on CD recurrence and long-term complications are warranted.
