The fertiliser industry faces a continuing challenge to improve the efficiency of their products,particularly of nitrogenous fertilisers,and to minimise adverse ***,a new slow release fertilizer,ureaimpregnated woodchips from tropical plant biomass(oil palm frond and rubberwood),was *** morphology of the impregnated woodchips was investigated by scanning electron microscopy and the success of impregnation of urea and nitrogen deposition into the woodchips was confirmed by energy dispersive X-ray *** nitrogen release patterns from impregnated woodchips fertiliser were simulated using a soil solution and distilled water as leaching solutions in a static condition for 768 h,release was slow and steady,although the release rate was lower in distilled water than in the soil solution.

E dible bird’s nest(EBN)hydrolysates have been proven to exhibit enhanced ***,being a macromolecule,fractions with different molecular weights would have different properties and ***,this research was aimed to determine the chemical properties and antioxidant activities of freezedried(EBN_(FD))and spray-dried EBN(EBN_(SD))hydrolysates fractionated using gel permeation chromatography(GPC).Overall,two well-separated fractions were identified(EBN_(fFD1),EBN_(fFD2),EBN_(fSD1) and EBN_(fSD2)).EBNFD demonstrated significantly higher(P≤0.05)peptide(3.6%),total carbohydrate(27.7%)and sialic acid(18.2%)contents than that of *** trend was observed in low molecular weight fractionates(EBN_(fFD2) and EBN_(fSD2)).Meanwhile,the first fractionates(EBN_(fFD1) and EBN_(fSD1))exhibited significantly higher(P≤0.05)hydroxyl radical(·OH)scavenging *** transform infrared(FTIR)spectroscopy demonstrated that all EBN fractionates have similar spectrum,except in the region of N—H(amideⅡ)and C—H alkyl *** conclusion,EBN fractionates with different molecular weights showed different chemical properties and antioxidant activities.

Efficacy and safety of latanoprost/timolol fixed combination dosed twice daily compared to once daily in patients with primary open angle glaucoma

AIM:To evaluate whether latanoprost/timolol fixed combination(LTFC)dosed twice daily may provide further intraocular pressure(IOP)reduction and evaluate the safety profile at this ***:This is an open-labeled,randomized,prospective crossover study on fourty primary open angle glaucoma *** weeks of washout period were followed by randomization to either once daily(OD,group A)or twice daily dosing(BD,group B)of LTFC for *** another 2-week washout period,the patients’treatment dose was crossed-over for another *** reduction alongside ocular and systemic side effects were ***:Mean baseline IOP was 18.57±2.93 and 17.8±3.01 mm Hg before OD and BD dose respectively,(P=0.27).Mean IOP after BD dose was statistically lower(12.49±1.59 mm Hg)compared to OD(13.48±1.81 mm Hg,P=0.017).Although IOP reduction after BD dose was more(5.32±3.24 mm Hg,29.89%)than after OD dosing(5.04 mm Hg,27.14%),it did not reach statistical significance(P=0.68).Patients switched from OD to BD(group A)showed mean IOP reduction by 0.69 mm Hg[95%confidence interval(CI):-0.09 to 1.48 mm Hg,P=0.078];but patients switched from BD to OD(group B)had significantly higher mean IOP by 1.25 mm Hg(95%CI:-2.04 to-0.46 mm Hg,P=0.006).BD dose had more ocular side effects albeit ***:Mean IOP after LTFC dosed twice daily is statistically lower,with additional mild side effects.

Nasopharyngeal cancer(NPC) is endemic in Southern China,with Guandong province and Hong Kong reporting some of the highest incidences in the *** journal Science has called it a "Cantonese cancer".We propose that in fact NPC is a cancer that originated in the Bai-Yue("proto-Tai-Kadai" or "proto-Austronesian" or "proto-Zhuang") peoples and was transmitted to the Han Chinese in southern China through ***,the work by John Ho raised the profile of NPC,and because of the high incidence of NPC in Hong Kong and Guangzhou,NPC became known as a Cantonese *** searched historical articles,articles cited in PubMed,Google,monographs,books and Internet articles relating to genetics of the peoples with high populations of *** migration history of these various peoples was extensively researched,and where possible,their genetic fingerprint identified to corroborate with historical *** and anthropological evidence suggest there are a lot of similarities between the Bai-Yue and the aboriginal peoples of Borneo and Northeast India;between Inuit of Greenland,Austronesian Mayalo-Polynesians of Southeast Asia and Polynesians of Oceania,suggesting some common *** studies also suggest the present Cantonese,Minnans and Hakkas are probably an admixture of northern Han and southern *** these populations have a high incidence of *** early contact between southern Chinese and peoples of East Africa and Arabia can also account for the intermediate incidence of NPC in these regions.

AIM: To compare the diagnostic ability of glaucoma parameters measured by the optical coherence tomography(OCT) in normal, preperimetric glaucoma(PPG) and perimetric glaucoma(PG) patients. METHODS: This cross-sectional observational study includes 127 eyes of 127 subjects. Patients were divided into PPG(51 eyes), PG(46 eyes), and normal controls(30 eyes) based on clinical optic disc assessment and Humphrey visual field changes. The Heidelberg Spectralis OCT machine using Glaucoma Module Premium Edition software was used to measure the retinal nerve fiber layer(RNFL) and Bruch’s membrane opening-minimum rim width(BMO-MRW) to assess the optic nerve head and ganglion cell layer(GCL) thickness in the macula. RESULTS: RNFL, MRW, and GCL thickness were all significantly thinner in PG compared to PPG and the normal group. The BMO-MRW parameters showed better specificity(>70%) at 90% specificity compared to both RNFL and GCL parameters to discriminate normal, PPG, and PG patients. All BMO-MRW parameters showed higher area under curves(AUC) compared to RNFL and GCL parameters with the highest AUC observed in the superotemporal sector of the BMO-MRW(AUC=0.819 and and 0.897 between normal and PPG and PG groups respectively).CONCLUSION: While the BMO-MRW best discriminates PPG and PG against normal eyes, GCL parameters poorly differentiate the three groups.

AIM To observe the natural course of 1-3 cm gastric submucosal tumors originating from the muscularis propria(SMTMPs).METHODS By reviewing the computerized medical records over a period of 14 years(2000-2013), patients with 1-3 cm gastric SMTMPs who underwent at least two endoscopic ultrasound(EUS) examinations were enrolled. Tumor progression was defined as a ≥ 1.2 times enlargement in tumor diameter observed during EUS surveillance. All patients were divided into stationary and progressive subgroups and further analyzed. We also reviewed the patients in the progressive subgroup again in *** A total of 88 patients were studied, including 25 in the progressive subgroup. The mean time of EUS surveillance was 24.6 mo in the stationary subgroup and 30.7 mo in the progressive subgroup. Risk factors for tumor progression included larger tumor size and irregular border. Initial tumor size > 14.0 mm may be considered a cut-off size for predicting tumor progression. Seventeen patients underwent surgery, of whom 13 had gastrointestinal stromal tumors(GISTs) and 4 had leiomyomas. Tumor progression was found only in patients with GISTs. All of the tumors exhibited benign behaviors without metastasis until *** Most 1-3 cm gastric SMTMPs(71.6%) are indolent. Tumor progression was found only in GISTs, and it is a good predictor for differentiating GISTs from leiomyomas. Predictors of tumor progression include larger tumor size(> 14.0 mm) and irregular border.

Last year, the first attempt to genetically modify human embryos in the United States was reported and sparked a huge debate (Ma et al., 2017). Although the first human germline modification was only performed two years ago, the study showed that rapid adva nces in tech no logy has allowed the rate of off-target effects and mosaicism to be reduced considerably (Liang et al., 2015). Recently, Vertex and CRISPR therapeutics collaborated and developed CTX001, the first CRISPR/Cas9-based therapy, targeting patients with P-thalassemia and have begun phase 1/2 clinical trials. With policies and technologies regarding genome editing both developing rapidly, explorations into the possibility of clinical gene editing for hundreds of hereditary diseases are starting to become achievable. Here, we address the progress of huma n embryo editi ng tech no logies so far and its promise and risks in advancing therapy for hereditary diseases.
