Sarcomatoid carcinoma is a rare malignant tumor that has both malignant epithelial and mesenchymal components. We describe a sarcomatoid carcinoma arising in the right renal pelvis of a 68-year-old man. The dominant component of the tumor was osteosarcomatous, but there were also focal carcinomatous areas. The sarcomatous tumor cells produced abundant osteoid matrix surrounded by osteoblastic cells. The carcinomatous tumor cells consisted of papillary urothelial carcinoma. Immunohistochemical assay showed that the sarcomatous tumor cells were positive for vimentin and negative for cytokeratin. The papillary urothelial carcinoma was positive for cytokeratin and negative for vimentin. After surgery, the patient underwent adjuvant chemotherapy. Four months later, he presented with recurrence in the right subphrenic area and metastasis in the right middle lobe of the lung.

AIM: To investigate the anti-proliferative and apoptotic effects of Chaga mushroom (Inonotus obliquus) water extract on human hepatoma cell lines,HepG2 and Hep3B cells. METHODS: The cytotoxicity of Chaga extract was screened by 3-4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. Morphological observation,flow cytometry analysis,Western blot were employed to elucidate the cytotoxic mechanism of Chaga extract. RESULTS: HepG2 cells were more sensitive to Chaga extract than Hep3B cells,as demonstrated by markedly reduced cell viability. Chaga extract inhibited the cell growth in a dose-dependent manner,which was accompanied with G0/G1-phase arrest and apoptotic cell death. In addition,G0/G1 arrest in the cell cycle was closely associated with down-regulation of p53,pRb,p27,cyclins D1,D2,E,cyclin-dependent kinase (Cdk) 2,Cdk4,and Cdk6 expression. CONCLUSION: Chaga mushroom may provide a new therapeutic option,as a potential anticancer agent,in the treatment of hepatoma.

The East Asian Very Long Baseline Interferometry(VLBI) Network(EAVN) is a rapidly evolving international VLBI array that is currently promoted under joint efforts among China,Japan and *** aims at forming a joint VLBI Network by combining a large number of radio telescopes distributed over East Asian *** the combination of the Korean VLBI Network(KVN) and the VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry(VERA) into Ka VA,further expansion with the joint array in East Asia is actively *** we report the first imaging results(at 22 and 43 GHz) of bright radio sources obtained with Ka VA connected to Tianma 65-m and Nanshan 26-m Radio Telescopes in *** test the EAVN imaging performance for different sources,we observed four active galactic nuclei(AGN) having different brightness and *** a result,we confirmed that the Tianma 65-m Radio Telescope(TMRT) significantly enhances the overall array sensitivity,a factor of 4 improvement in baseline sensitivity and 2 in image dynamic range compared to the case of Ka VA *** addition of the Nanshan 26-m Radio Telescope(NSRT) further doubled the east-west angular *** the resulting high-dynamic-range,high-resolution images with EAVN(Ka VA+TMRT+NSRT),various fine-scale structures in our targets,such as the counter-jet in M87,a kink-like morphology of the 3 C 273 jet and the weak emission in other sources are successfully *** demonstrates the powerful capability of EAVN to study AGN jets and to achieve other science goals in *** expansion of EAVN will further enhance the angular resolution,detection sensitivity and frequency coverage of the network.

Cytomegalovirus(CMV) infection of the gastrointestinal tract has been reported most frequently in the setting of immunodeficiency. The whole gastrointestinal tract can be affected; however, the small bowel is rarely affected. We report a case of CMV enteritis with jejunal perforation in a 53-year-old woman with a history of chemoradiation therapy for endometrial cancer 8 years previously. At follow-up evaluation, lower abdominal pain, diarrhea and vomiting appeared. Abdominal computed tomography showed intra-abdominal free air in the subphrenic space and porta hepatis. The jejunal segment revealed serosal purulent exudates with a perforation. The resected jejunal segment showed a large geographic ulcerative mucosal lesion. The microscopic findings revealed a diffuse ulcerative mucosal change with a prominent granulation tissue formation and many large atypical vascular endothelial cells and stromal fibroblasts with intranuclear or intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies. These cells were positive for CMV antibody. The final diagnosis was CMV-associated jejunitis with a jejunal perforation.

Background: A phase II clinical trial of the comparison between eribulin plus gemcitabine (EG) and paclitaxel plus gemcitabine (PG) as first-line chemotherapy for patients with metastatic breast cancer (MBC) found that the EG regimen was less neurotoxic, but was similar in efficacy to the PG regimen. In the present study, we analyzed functional assessment of cancer therapy-taxane (FACT-Taxane) questionnaires from patients in this clinical trial to determine their quality of life (QoL). Methods: QoL was assessed using the Korean version of the FACT-Taxane questionnaires. After baseline assessment, QoL was assessed every 2 cycles for 12 cycles and every 3 cycles thereafter. The linear mixed model was used to evaluate the difference in QoL between the EG and PG arms. Results: Of the 118 enrolled patients, 117 responded to the FACT-Taxane questionnaires at baseline, 1 in the PG arm did not. Baseline QoL scores were not different between the EG and PG arms. During treatment, taxane subscale scores were significantly higher in the PG arm than in the EG arm after 2-13 cycles of chemotherapy (all P severe neuropathic symptoms than those in the EG arm (P sed neuropathy as compared with the PG regimen. Therefore, eribulin would be a reasonable substitute for paclitaxel as first-line chemotherapy for MBC.

AIM:To elucidate the effects of dexamethasone on hypoxia-induced epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition(EMT) in colon ***:Human colon cancer HCT116 and HT29 cells were exposed to normoxic(21%) and hypoxic(1%) conditions. First,the effect of dexamethasone on cell viability was examined by MTT cell proliferation assay. In order to measure the expression levels of EMT markers(Snail,Slug,Twist,E-cadherin,and integrin αVβ6) and hypoxia-related genes [Hypoxia-inducible factor-1α(HIF-1α) and vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF)] by dexamethasone,quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction and western blot analysis were performed. Furthermore,the morphological changes of colon cancer cells and the expression pattern of E-cadherin by dexamethasone were detected through immunocytochemistry. Finally,the effects of dexamethasone on the invasiveness and migration of colon cancer cells were elucidated using matrigel invasion,migration,and wound healing migration ***:Under hypoxia,dexamethasone treatment inhibited HIF-1α protein level and its downstream gene,VEGF m RNA level in the colon cancer cell lines,HCT116 and HT29. In addition,the presence of dexamethasone down-regulated the m RNA levels of hypoxia-induced Snail,Slug,and Twist,all transcriptional factors of EMT,as well as hypoxia-induced integrin αVβ6 protein level,a well-known EMT marker for colon cancer cells. Furthermore,reduced E-cadherin in hypoxic condition was found to be recoverable by treating with dexamethasone in both colon cancer cell lines. Similarly,under hypoxic conditions,dexamethasone restored the growth pattern and morphological phenotype reminiscent of colon cancer cells grown under normoxic conditions; dexamethasone blocked the migration and invasion of both colorectal cancer cell lines in ***:Our study suggested that dexamethasone has inhibitory effects on cell migration and invasion by suppressing EMT of colon cancer cell lines in hypoxic condition.

BACKGROUND： Sarcopenia and non-alcoholic fatty liver dis- ease （NAFLD） share similar pathophysiological mechanisms, and the relationship between sarcopenia and NAFLD has been recently investigated. The study investigated whether low skel- etal muscle mass is differentially associated with NAFLD by gender in Korean adults. METHODS： We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of the data from the Fifth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The skeletal muscle index （SMI） was obtained by the appendicular skeletal muscle mass divided by the weight. NAFLD was defined as a fatty liver index （FLI）〉60 in the absence of other chronic liver disease. RESULTS： Among the included subjects, 18.3% （se： 1.4%） in men and 7.0% （se： 0.7%） in women were classified as having FLI-defined NAFLD. Most of the risk factors for FLI-defined NAFLD showed a significant negative correlation with the SMI in both genders. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that low SMI was associated with FLI-defined NAFLD, inde- pendent of other metabolic and lifestyle parameters in both genders [males： odds ratio （OR）=1.35; 95% confidence inter- val （CI）： 1.17-1.54; females： OR=1.36; 95% CI： 1.18-1.55]. The magnitude of the association between FLI-defined NAFLD and low SMI was higher in middle aged to elderly males （OR-1.50; 95% CI： 1.22-1.84） than in males less than 45 years of age （OR=1.25; 95% CI： 1.02-1.52） and in premenopausal females （OR=l.50; 95% CI： 1.12-2.03） than in postmenopausal females （OR-1.36; 95% CI： 1.20-1.54）.CONCLUSIONS： Low SMI is associated with the risk of FLI- defined NAFLD independent of other well-known metabolic risk factors in both genders. This association may differ ac- cording to age group or menopausal status. Further studies are warranted to confirm this relationship.
