Irisin is a myokine that is generated by cleavage of the membrane protein fibronectin type Ⅲ domain-containing protein 5(FNDC5) in response to physical exercise. Studies reveal that irisin/FNDC5 has neuroprotective functions against Alzheimer's disease, the most common form of dementia in the elderly, by improving cognitive function and reducing amyloid-β and tau pathologies as well as neuroinflammation in cell culture or animal models of Alzheimer's disease. Although current and ongoing studies on irisin/FNDC5 show promising results, further mechanistic studies are required to clarify its potential as a meaningful therapeutic target for alleviating Alzheimer's disease. We recently found that irisin treatment reduces amyloid-β pathology by increasing the activity/levels of amyloid-β-degrading enzyme neprilysin secreted from astrocytes. Herein, we present an overview of irisin/FNDC5's protective roles and mechanisms against Alzheimer's disease.

AIM: To assess the efficacy and safety of weekly docetaxel plus a fixed-dose rate(FDR) of gemcitabine in metastatic esophageal squamous cell carcinoma(SCC).METHODS: A multi-center, open-label, prospective phase Ⅱ study was ***-three esophageal SCC patients with documented progression after fluoropyrimidine/platinum-based first-line chemotherapy were enrolled and treated with docetaxel 35 mg/m2 and gemcitabine 1000 mg/m2 iv at a FDR(10 mg/m2 per minute) on days 1 and *** was repeatedevery twenty-one days until disease progression, unacceptable toxicity, or consent *** primary endpoint was response rate(RR), and secondary endpoints were safety, progression-free survival(PFS) and overall survival(OS).RESULTS: Combination of weekly docetaxel and FDR gemcitabine was well tolerated: the most common treatment-related adverse events were anemia(97%), fatigue(64%) and neutropenia(55%).One patient with multiple lung and lymph node metastases died of respiratory failure after receiving four cycles of chemotherapy, and the possibility of drug-induced pneumonitis could not be completely *** control(objective response plus stable disease) in the ITT population was achieved in 88% of patients, and the overall RR was 30%(95%CI: 15%-46%).The median PFS and OS were 4.0(95%CI: 3.4-4.6) and 8.8 mo(95%CI: 7.8-9.8 mo), ***: A combination of weekly docetaxel and FDR gemcitabine showed promising antitumor activity and tolerability in previously treated, metastatic esophageal SCC.

AIMTo evaluate complications and management outcomes of retained long-term plastic biliary *** plastic biliary stent placement was performed in 802 patients at Yeungnam University Hospital between January 2000 and December 2014. Follow-up loss with a subsequently forgotten stent for more than 12 mo occurred in 38 patients. We retrospectively examined the cause of biliary stent insertion, status of stents, complications associated with biliary stents and management outcomes of long-term plastic biliary stents. Continuous variables were analyzed using the t test. Observed frequencies in subsets of the study population were compared using Fisher’s exact test and χ2 tests. Statistical significance was defined as P sertion were bile duct stones (63.2%, 24/38) and benign bile duct stricture (52.6%, 20/38). Mean duration of retained plastic stent was 22.6 ± 12.2 mo, and in 10 cases (26.3%), stents were retained for more than 24 mo. Common bile duct (CBD) stones or sludge were found in most cases (92.1%, 35/38). The most common complication was acute cholangitis (94.7%, 36/38). Stent removal by endoscopic approach was successfully performed in 92.1% (35/38) of the cases. In 3 cases, an additional plastic stent was inserted alongside the previous stent due to failure of the stent removal. Endoscopic removal of bile duct stones was successful in 73.7% (28/38) of the cases. When patients were divided into two groups by duration of stent placement (12 to 24 mo vs over 24 mo), there were no differences in the development of cholangitis, presence of biliary stones, and success rate of endoscopic removal of stones and biliary *** most common complication of retained long-term plastic biliary stents was acute cholangitis associated with CBD stones. Electrical capacitance volume tomography (ECVT) was conducted to measure instantaneous gas–solid flow structures in a conical spouted bed. The sensor has 24 electrodes/channels and was used to make three-dimensional measurements of the solid volume fraction. Flow structures in the conical spouted bed were analyzed using quantitative ECVT images. Three-dimensional images of gas–solid flow structures and time-averaged vertical and radial solid volume fraction profiles are presented. Different fluidization regimes in spouted beds were characterized by analyzing pressure fluctuation signals and ECVT images. ECVT was shown to be robust and powerful for the three-dimensional visualization and quantitative measurement of a gas–solid fluidization system.

A jumping mechanism can be an efficient mode of motion for small robots to overcome large obstacles on the ground and rough terrain. In this paper, we present a 7 g prototype of locust-inspired jumping mechanism that uses springs, wire, reduction gears, and a motor as the actuation components. The leg structure and muscles of a locust or grasshopper were mimicked using springs and wire, springs for passive extensor muscles, and a wire as a flexor muscle. A small motor was used to slowly charge the spring through a lever and gear system, and a cam with a special profile was used as a clicking mechanism for quick release of elastic energy stored in the springs to create a sudden kick for a quick jump. Performance analysis and experiments were conducted for comparison and performance estimation of the jumping mechanism prototype. Our prototype could produce standing jumps over obstacles that were about 14 times its own size （approximate to 71 cm） and a jumping distance of 20 times its own size （approximate to 100 cm）.

We propose a control moment generator to control the attitude of an insect-like tailless Flapping-wing Micro Air Vehicle （FW-MAV）, where the flapping wings simultaneously produce the flight force and control moments. The generator tilts the stroke plane of each wing independently to direct the resultant aerodynamic force in the desired direction to ultimately generate pitch and yaw moments. A roll moment is produced by an additional mechanism that shifts the trailing edge, which changes the wing rotation angles of the two flapping wings and produces an asymmetric thrust. Images of the flapping wings are captured with a high-speed camera and clearly show that the FW-MAV can independently change the stroke planes of its two wings. The measured force and moment data prove that the control moment generator produces reasonable pitch and yaw moments by tilting the stroke plane and realizes a roll moment by shifting the position of the trailing edge at the wing root.

This paper reports the effect of the Center of Gravity(CG)position on lateral flight dynamic stability of hovering KUBeetle,a tailless FW-MAV,providing further insights on the effects of asymmetries in body mass distribution and wing *** the current study,the standard linearized equations of motion were applied as in the previous work on longitudinal dynamic *** stability derivatives were acquired using the computational fluid dynamic methods via the commercial software of ANSYS *** exists a stable region for CG between 2.6%and 3.5%of the mean chord below the wing pivot point,in which the lateral motion of hovering KUBeetle is passively *** CG below the stable region,because of an unstable oscillatory mode,the lateral motion of the FW-MAV is unstable but can be stabilized using rolling rate *** CG above the stable region,because of a divergence mode,the system remains unstable even with the rolling rate *** with other works on an FW-MAV based on a quasi-steady aerodynamic model and on insect showed similar characteristics for flapping *** is also interesting to note that the asymmetries in body mass and wing kinematics can enlarge the stable region of the system by a non-zero Ixz which approaches the root square of√IxIz,a negative LrNp,and a positive Ix2(Ir+Np).Combining the current result with that of the previous work on longitudinal motion,the most beneficial region of the CG for full 6-DOF flight dynamic stability of hovering KUBeetle was suggested.
