Cs_(3)Bi_(2)l_(9)-hydroxyapatite composite waste forms for cesium and iodine immobilization

Perovskite-based ceramic composites were developed as potential waste form materials for immobilizing cesium(Cs)and iodine(I)with high waste loadings and chemical *** perovskite Cs_(3)Bi_(2)I_(9)has high Cs(22 wt%)and I(58 wt%)content,and thus can be used as a potential host phase to immobilize these critical *** this work,the perovskite Cs_(3)Bi_(2)I_(9)phase was synthesized by a cost effective solution-based approach,and was embedded into a highly durable hydroxyapatite matrix by spark plasma sintering to form dense ceramic composite waste *** chemical durabilities of the monolithic Cs_(3)Bi_(2)I_(9)and Cs_(3)Bi_(2)I_(9)-hydroxyapatite composite pellets were investigated by static and semi-dynamic leaching tests,*** and I are incongruently released from the matrix for both pure Cs_(3)Bi_(2)I_(9)and composite *** normalized Cs release rate is faster than that of I,which can be explained by the difference in the strengths between Cs-I and Bi-I bonds as well as the formation of insoluble micrometer-sized BiOI *** activation energies of elemental releases based on dissolution and diffusion-controlled mechanisms are determined with significantly higher energy barriers for dissolution from the composite versus that of the monolithic Cs_(3)Bi_(2)I_(9).The ceramic-based composite waste forms exhibit excellent chemical durabilities and waste loadings,commensurate with the state-of-the-art glass-bonded perovskite composites for I and Cs immobilization.

Limitations of RNAi of e6 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor subunits for assessing the in vivo sensitivity to spinosad

Spinosad is a widely used insecticide that exerts its toxic effect primarily through interactions with the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor. The a6 nicotinic acetyl- choline receptor subunit is involved in spinosad toxicity as demonstrated by the high levels of resistance observed in strains lacking a6. RNAi was performed against the da6 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor subunit in drosophila melanogaster using the Gal4-UAS system to examine if RNAi would yield results similar to those of a6 null mutants. These da6-deficient flies were subject to spinosad contact bioassays to evaluate the role of the da6 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor subunit on spinosad sensitivity. The expression of da6 was reduced 60%-75% as verified by quantitative polymerase chain reaction. However, there was no change in spinosad sensitivity in d. melanogaster. We repeated RNAi experiments in Tribolium castaneum using injection of dsRNA for Tcasct6. RNAi of Tcasa6 did not result in changes in spinosad sensitivity, similar to results obtained with d. melanogaster. The lack of change in spinosad sensitivity in both d. melanogaster and T. castaneum using two routes of dsRNA administration shows that RNAi may not provide adequate conditions to study the role of nicotinic acetylcholine receptor subunits on insecticide sensitivity due to the inability to completely eliminate expression of the a6 subunit in both species. Potential causes for the lack of change in spinosad sensitivity are discussed.

Isolated lateral compartment osteoarthritis of the knee is a rare condition affecting approximately 1%of the population,which is ten times less common than osteoarthritis affecting only the medial *** knee arthroplasty(UKA)has many potential advantages over total knee *** benefits of UKA include a smaller incision,preservation of more native tissue(including cruciate ligaments and bone),decreased blood loss,and better overall *** UKA was first introduced in the 1970s,the outcomes of medial UKA(MUKA)were poor,but the few cases of lateral UKA(LUKA)showed *** that time,there has been a relative paucity of literature focused specifically on LUKA given it is a rare *** in patient selection criteria,implant design,and surgical technique have been made leading to increased popularity.A review of the recent literature reveals that LUKA is associated with excellent long-term clinical outcomes and implant survivorship when performed in properly selected *** design options include fixed vs mobile bearing as well as metal backed vs all polyethylene tibial component,with improved outcomes noted with fixed bearing *** reasons cited for revision(i.e.,fracture of the femoral component,fracture of the tibial component,and valgus malalignment)had been reported in past literature but not ***,while rare,the most common cause of failure and need for revision are osteoarthritis progression and aseptic *** the need for an occasional revision procedure,the survivorship of LUKA is comparable to MUKA,although it should be noted that outcomes of MUKA have been notably *** pursuit of improved techniques and implant designs will continue to show LUKA to be an excellent procedure for appropriately indicated patients.

对兰姆波非线性效应进行了实验观察。首先,对实验所采用的Ritec系统进行了介绍,尤其对实验系统的声学部分进行了详细考虑,特别是对二次谐波的时域响应进行了简洁直观的分析。根据兰姆波具有强烈非线性效应的条件,采用斜劈换能器发射和接收兰姆波。改变发射与接收斜劈换能器的间距,对一定频率范围内的兰姆波及二次谐波在固体板表面的振幅进行了测量。在基频与二倍频兰姆波相速度相等所对应的频率附近,分析了二次谐波振幅随传播距离的定量关系,从实验上证实了二次谐波在传播过程中具有积累增长效应的结论。

Polymersomes scalably fabricated via flash nano- precipitation are non-toxic in non-human primates and associate with leukocytes in the spleen and kidney following intravenous administration

Vesicular nanocarrier formulations confer the ability to deliver hydrophobic and hydrophilic cargos simultaneously to cells of interest in vivo. While liposomal formulations reached the clinic long ago, younger technologies such as polymeric vesicles （polymersomes） have yet to make the transition to clinical approval and use, in part due to difficulties in ensuring their safe and scalable production. In this work, we demonstrate the scalable production of poly（ethylene glycol）-block-poly（propylene sulfide）（PEG-bl-PPS） polymersomes via flash nanoprecipitation, and further show the safe administration of these nanocarriers to mice and non-human primates. In mice, PEG-bl-PPS polymersomes were found to be well tolerated at up to 200 mg/（***）. Following the administration of a more relevant 20 mg/（***） dosage in non-human primates, polymersomes were found to associate with numerous phagocytic immune cell populations, including a remarkable 68% of plasmacytoid dendritic cells and 〉 95% of macrophages in the spleen, while showing no toxicity or abnormalities in the liver, kidney, spleen, or blood. despite the presence of a dense PEG corona, neither anti-PEG antibodies nor complement activation were detected. This work provides evidence of the translatability of PEG-bI-PPS polymersomes into the clinic for therapeutic applications in humans.

Management of gastroesophageal reflux disease: Patient and physician communication challenges and shared decision making

Gastroesophageal reflux disease(GERd) is a common upper esophageal condition and typical symptoms can include heartburn and sensation of regurgitation while atypical symptoms include chronic cough, asthma, hoarseness, dyspepsia and nausea. Typically, diag-nosis is presumptive given the presence of typical and atypical symptoms and is an indication for empiric therapy. Treatment management can include lifestyle modifications and/or medication therapy with proton pump inhibitor(PPI) class being the preferred and most effective. Complete symptom resolution is not always achieved and long-term PPI therapy can put patients at risk for serious side effects and needless expense. The brain-gut connection and hypervigilance plays an important role in symptom resolution and treatment success, especially in the case of non-PPI responders. Hypervigilance is a combination of increased esophageal sensory sensitivity in combination with exaggerated threat perception surrounding esophageal symptoms. Hypervigilance requires a different approach to GERd managements, where continued PPI therapy and surgery are usually not recommended. Rather, helping physicians and patients understand the brain-gut connection can guide and improve *** and reassurance should be the main pillars or treatment. However, it is important not to suggest the symptoms are due to anxiety alone, this often leads to patient dissatisfaction. Patient dissatisfaction with treatment reveals the need for a more patient-centered approach to GERd management and better communication between patients and providers. Shared decision making(SdM) with the incorporation of patient-reported outcomes(PRO) promotes patient adherence and satisfaction. SdM is a joint discussion between clinician and patient in which a mutually shared solution is explored for GERd symptoms. For SdM to work the physician needs to capture patients' perceptions which may not be obtained in the standard interview. This can be done through the

Scatter hoarding by corvids （crows, jays, magpies, and nutcrackers） provides seed dispersal for many large-seeded plants, including oaks and pines. When hoarding seeds, corvids often choose nonrandom locations throughout the landscape, resulting in differential survival of seeds. In the context of habitat restoration, such disproportional storing of seeds in areas suitable for germin- ation and establishment can accelerate expansion and recovery of large-seeded tree populations and their associated ecosystems. Here, we investigate the spatial preferences of island scrub jays Aphelocoma insularis during scatter hoarding of acorns （Quercus spp.） on Santa Cruz Island. We use a large behavioral data set on the birds＇ behavior in combination with seedling surveys and spatial analysis to determine whether 1） island scrub jays disproportionally cache seeds in specific habitat types, and 2） whether the preferred habitat type is suitable for oak regeneration. Our results show that the jays nonrandomly cache acorns across the landscape; they use chaparral and coastal sage scrub disproportionally while avoiding open and grassy areas. The areas used most often for caching were also the areas with the highest oak seedling densities. We discuss the potential role of these findings for the recovery of Santa Cruz Island＇s oak habitat since the 1980s.

Management of prostatosymphyseal fistula following photoselective vaporization of the prostate:Case series and systematic review of the literature

Background:This study is aimed to describe our institutional experience and review the literature to date on prostatosymphyseal fistula(PSF),or puboprostatic fistula,following bladder outlet procedures such as transurethral resection of the prostate(TURP)or laser photoselective vaporization of the prostate(PVP).Materials and methods:We retrospectively queried our institutional experience for management of PSF following PVP performed for symptomatic benign prostatic *** also performed a systematic literature review for PSF following PVP or ***,we describe our surgical approach to the management of this challenging ***:We identified 7 cases of PSF following PVP from our institution,as well as an additional 7 cases following PVP and 9 cases following TURP from literature *** diagnosis of PSF was made between 0.5 and 24 months following PVP,and the most specific symptoms were pubic pain and difficulty *** patients requiring several evaluations before the diagnosis was made using appropriate imaging *** percent of patients required surgical intervention including fistula repair or *** surgical approach has evolved,and we now routinely perform robotic fistula repair with Y-V plasty and interposition flap with excellent ***:Puboprostatic fistula is a rare and poorly described complication of PVP or *** the best of our knowledge,this case series of PSF following PVP represents the largest series to date and doubles the number of reported cases in the *** fistula repair with interposition of either peritoneal or perivesical fat flaps appears to be a viable management strategy.
