External synchronization is addressed as two or more dynamical systems with synchronous motions,which is also regarded as master-slave *** this paper,two dynamical systems,one employs a hysteretic term to model the friction phenomenon,the other involves a hardening stiffness component with the third order of displacement due to flexible deformation,are controlled to converge to the same *** control strategy is extended from feedback control for all parameters known to adaptive control for linear parameters unknown and all parameters *** slave system can keep synchronous motions with the movements of master via the designed control strategy even all the parameters are not *** stability of synchronization error,the transient process into synchronization and the effects of parameters on the designed controller using different control strategies are *** simulation results unfold the feasibility and effectiveness of this synchronization method.

The fuzzy sets theory is introduced into the fatigue reliability analysis. The concepts of maximizing set and minimizing set are developed to decide the ordering value of each fuzzy number, and these values can be used to determine the order of the fuzzy numbers. On the basis of the works mentioned above, the membership function defining the fuzzy safety event can be calculated, and then the fuzzy reliability in the case of stress and fuzzy fatigue strength is deduced. An example is given to illustrate the method.

A model for the non-linear axial vibrations of the hydrodynamic thrust bearing-rotor system in a turboexpander is described. The axial transient process of the system is investigated. The time-dependent form ofthe Reynolds equation is solved by a finite difference method with successive overrelaxation scheme to obtain the hydrodynamic forces of the sector-shaped thrust bearing (SSTB). Using these forces, the equation of motion is solved by the fourth-order Runge-Kutta method and the Adams method to predict the transient behaviour of the thrust bearing-rotor system (TBRS).Also,the linearized stiffness and damping coefficients of the oil film hydrodynamic SSTB are *** analyses of the axial transient response of the system under both linear and non-linear conditions are performed. The non-linearity of oil film forces can significantly contribute to the axial transient response. Conclusions obtained can be applied for evaluation of the reliability of the TBRS.

An application of the boundary element method (BEM) is presented to calculate the behaviors of a spiral grooved thrust bearing (SGTB). The basic reason is that the SGTB has very complex boundary conditions that can hinder the effective or sufficient applications of the finite difference method (FDM) and the finite element method (FEM), despite some existing work based on the FDM and the FEM. In other to apply the BEM, the pressure control equation, i. e., Reynolds' equation, is first transformed into Laplace's and Poisson's form of the equations. Discretization of the SGTB with a set of boundary elements is thus explained in detail, which also includes the handling of boundary conditions. The Archimedean SGTB is chosen as an example of the application Of BEM, and the relationship between the behaviors and structure parameters of the bearing are found and discussed through this calculation. The obtained results lay a solid foundation for a further work of the design of the SGTB.

Some fundamental studies related to the production of high carbon ferrochromium were summarizedusing melt circulation technology carried out in the school of Chemical engineering at the University of Birmingham. These studies focused on the kinetics of chromite reduction in Fe-C(-Cr-Si) melts. The effects of feed mode,fluxes, amount and particle size of reductant, particle size of chromite, melt composition and the reduction temperature were investigated. The reduction mechanisms were discussed. The results showed that (1 ) the reduction rates ofsintered chromite Pellets and non-compacted chromite powder in Fe-C(-Cr-Si) melts was generally very low,(2) addition of carbon in the non-compacted chromite feed greatly improved the reduction kinetics, (3) compaction of thecarbon-chromite mixtures into composite Pellets further improved the reduction kinetics and (4) addition of lime inthe composite Pellets increased the reduction rate, while the addition of silica may suppress the posihve effect oflime. It can be concluded that solid-state reduction, smelting reduction and dissolution proceed simultaneouslyduring the reduction of compacted compostite pellets or non-compacted composite mixtures in Fe-C(-Cr-Si) melts,and the early stage of reduction is very likely to be controlled by either or both solid-state and/or gas diffusionthrough the oxide phases and/or the product layers.

Microporous titanium carbide coating was successfully synthesized on medical grade titanium alloy by using sequential *** in the surface morphology of titanium alloy occasioned by sequential carburization were characterized and the wettability characteristics were ***,the dispersion forces were calculated and *** results indicate that sequential carburization is an effective way to modify the wettability of titanium *** the carburization the surface dispersion force of titanium alloy increased from 76.5×10^(-3)J·m^(-2) to 105.5×10^(-3) J·m^(-2),with an enhancement of 37.9 %.Meanwhile the contact angle of titanium alloy decreased from 83° to 71.5°,indicating a significant improvement of wettability,which is much closer to the optimal water contact angle for cell adhesion of 70°.
