Alginate Encapsulation as a Preservation Method of Pitaya Fruit Juice （Stenocereus spp.）

Alginate is a widely used polymer matrix in food industry since it allows formation of spherical, soft, and strong membranes adequate for encapsulation of a large amount of products, including food. The flow rate of alginate solutions and the permeability of the capsules were evaluated within an acidic-low acidic pH range and different alginate concentrations. In solutions adjusted at different pH （3.0 to 7.0） with concentrations of alginate of 0.8, 1.0, and 1.2% w/v, flow rates at 20 ℃ were 6.95 to 10.00, 4.54-5.35, and 2.60-2.80 mL sl, respectively. Permeability of the capsules was evaluated in terms of the diffusion of H＋ions （expressed as pH） and soluble solids （~Brix）. Meanwhile both diffusions were minor at 4.0 〈 pH 〈 7.0 and were significantly superior at more acidic pH （P 〈 0.05）, alginate concentration did not present significant effect. Yellow, purple, and red juices from Stenocereus spp. fruits （pitayas） were encapsulated using 1.0% of alginate and stored with isotonic solution （3 mL g^-1） at 4 ℃ in the dark. The capsules were spherical with diameter between 4.59 and 470 mm, weight from 82.60 to 97.50 rag, and volume of 0.075-0.098 mL. Pigment （total betalains content） diffusion reached equilibrium at 24 h of storage, at which point retentions of total betalains in the yellow, purple, and red capsules were 87.79, 96.13, and 85.13%, respectively. Also, changes in the color of the capsules were observed during storage.

Prehepatic portal hypertension induces a splanchnic low-grade inflammatory response that could switch to high-grade inflammation with the development of severe and life-threatening complications when associated with chronic liver disease. The extraembryonic origin of the portal system maybe determines the regression to an extraembryonic phenotype, i.e., vitellogenic and amniotic, during the evolution of both types of portal hypertension. Thus, prehepatic portal hypertension, or compensated hypertension by portal vein ligation in the rat, is associated with molecular mechanisms related to vitellogenesis, where hepatic steatosis and splanchnic angiogenesis stand out. In turn, extrahepatic cholestasis in the rat induces intrahepatic portal hypertension, or decompensated hypertension, with ascites and hepatorenal syndrome. The splanchnic interstitium, the mesenteric lymphatic system, and the peritoneal mesothelium seem to create an inflammatory pathway that could have a key pathophysiological relevance in the production of ascites. The hypothetical comparison between the ascitic and the amniotic fluid also allows for translational investigation. The induced regression of the splanchnic system to extraembryonic functions by portal hypertension highlights the great relevance of the extraem-bryonic structures even during postnatal life.

HIV-Associated Nephropathy in an HIV-2-Infected Patient

Background: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) type 2 infection is predominantly found in West African nations, and approximately 1 - 2 million people are thought to be infected. HIV-associated nephropathy (HIVAN) occurs in about 7% of patients with HIV-1 infection and is one of the most important causes of end-stage renal disease in this population. The only reported case of HIVAN related to HIV-2 infection was described by Izzedine et al. (2006). Aim: The aim of this paper is to report a case of HIVAN in an HIV-2-infected patient, a rarely described condition. Case presentation: We describe a case of a 40-year-old HIV-2-infected female from Angola hospitalized following a six-month history of fever, fatigue, anorexia and weight loss. Laboratory data revealed anaemia, leukopenia and renal dysfunction with nephrotic range proteinuria. Renal biopsy was performed, revealing findings consistent with HIVAN. Also, a presumed diagnosis of ganglionic tuberculosis was established. Conclusion: The slow progression of HIV-2 disease could explain the low frequency of this condition, however, more studies should be carried out for a better understanding of HIV-2 pathophysiology and its associated complications.

Determination of Mercuric Ion in Water Samples with a LED Exciting and CCD Based Portable Spectrofluorimeter

The fluorescent characteristics of a fluorimetric chemosensor for mercuric ion, Hg2+, employing a synthesized Rhodamine 6G derivative, have been analyzed. For that, a portable spectrofluorimeter composed of a 515 nm LED as excitation source, two fiber-optics and a CCD camera as detector, has been used, intended for “in situ” analysis. A highly selective Rhodamine based probe for Hg2+, that is water soluble and gives a positive response upon analyte binding, is reported. The reagent is bearing a monothiospirolactone group in a Rhodamine 6G architecture and the thiol atom served for the direct attack of thiophilic Hg2+. The fluorescence enhancement is attributed to the spirolactone ring opening and the coordination of two sulphur atoms to Hg2+ giving a 2:1 reagent: Hg2+ stoichiometry complex.

Embrionary way to create a fatty liver in portal hypertension

Portal hypertension in the rat by triple partial portal vein ligation produces an array of splanchnic and systemic disorders, including hepatic steatosis. In the current review these alterations are considered components of a systemic inflammatory response that would develop through three overlapping phenotypes: The neurogenic, the immune and the endocrine. These three inflammatory phenotypes could resemble the functions expressed during embryonic development of mammals. In turn, the inflammatory phenotypes would be represented in the embryo by two functional axes, that is, a coelomic-amniotic axis and a trophoblastic yolk-sac or vitelline axis. In this sense, the inflammatory response developed after triple partial portal vein ligation in the rat would integrate both functional embryonic axes on the liver interstitial space of Disse. If so, this fact would favor the successive development of steatosis, steatohepatitis and fibrosis. Firstly, these recapitulated embryonic functions would produce the evolution of liver steatosis. In this way, this fat liver could represent a yolk-sac-like in portal hypertensive rats. After that, the systemic recapitulation of these embryonic functions in experimental prehepatic portal hypertension would consequently induce a gastrulationlike response in which a hepatic wound healing reaction or fibrosis occur. In conclusion, studying the mechanisms involved in embryonic development could provide key results for a better understanding of the nonalcoholic fatty liver disease etiopathogeny.

X-Ray Vision: The Mental Genealogy of the Anatomy of the Interior of the Human Body

Background: The concepts of the Young Person and of an Elderly Person go through an evolutionary diversification during the Human lifecycle and are permeable to diverse biopsychosocial factors involved in the definition of the lifecycle stages. Therefore, assessing this subjectivity in different stages of development and population fringes may be a determinant key factor to assist the implementation of successful disease prevention and health promotion strategies. Aim: The aim of the present study was to discern how Fine Arts’ college students of the Anatomy class mentally represent the inner morphology of the human body of the Young Person and of an Elderly Person. Method: For such, 126 students were asked to draw the interior of the body of a Young Person and of an Elderly Person. In all, 252 drawings were collected and analysed, based on a coding data grid designed for this purpose. Hence, a comparative analysis of these two different vital lifecycle phases was achieved. Results: The results suggest anatomical differences in the pictorial representation of the Young Person and of the Elderly Person, namely in the accentuation of the curvatures of the vertebral column, retrusion of the lower jaw and muscle flaccidity. Conclusions: Although the body schema was the same for all individuals, the body image was singularly depicted and linked to each individual’s history, representing a synthesis of his idiosyncratic perceptions, experiences and particularities.

Analysis of the Performance of a Dehulling System for Confectionary Sunflower Seeds

Confectionary sunflower, which has a larger size and lower oil content than oilseed sunflower, has a considerable market, since it is used for birdfeed and human consumption. The characteristics of use of confectionary sunflower seeds require a dehulling process that is efficient in the removal of the hull and that also allows obtaining a product consisting mainly of whole kernels. Response surface methodology was used to determine an optimal combination of working conditions in the dehulling process of confectionary sunflower seeds. Optimization factors were impact speed, expressed in terms of the peripheral speed (28.3 -41.9 m/s), and moisture content of the seeds (4% -14%, dry basis—db). A central composite rotatable design (CCRD) was used to develop models for the responses (dehulling ability—DA and percentage of whole kernels—WK). Applying the desirability function method, the optimal values of the factors were determined using maximum WK and maximum DA as criteria. The results of the optimization technique suggest that by dehulling Mycogen 9338 confectionary sunflower seeds at 12.3% db and 32.5 m/s, the maximum values of DA and WK (72.6% and 63%, respectively) would be obtained. The moisture value defined as optimal determines a requirement of humidification of the seeds prior to dehulling, establishing the need for a technical and economic feasibility study.

Hydrogeochemical Research of Surface Water of the Córrego Sujo Watershed, Teresópolis, RJ, Brazil

The surface water quality was investigated in the Córrego Sujo watershed, located in the municipality of Teresópolis, a mountainous region in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The emphasis focused on inorganic parameters of water, since there are applications of pesticides in agricultural cultivations. The natural and anthropogenic contributions of the study area were monitored monthly in eight sites in the river channels of the drainage basin. The results were analyzed using an ICP-OES spectrophotometer and subsequently compared to Conama Resolution 357/05. In order to support the interpretation of the results of water quality, flow and precipitation data were measured in the watershed, along with the land use and vegetation cover map produced from a GeoEye satellite image. The study revealed that the surface waters were in high concentrations and above those recommended by Conama Resolution. It was noted also that the lithological and pedological variables influenced the results of water quality. Regarding seasonality, it has not been possible to establish a common standard to all elements in the rainy season or dry season, however, in the analysis of each parameter separately, there was evidence of a concentration distribution in temporal variation. Therefore, the results of this study indicate that it is also necessary to highlight these issues in the territorial planning of the municipality and in the management of the Committee of Rio Piabanha watershed, to avoid the increasing of uncontrolled expansion of irrigated crops and intensive use of agrochemical inputs.

Background: Primary effusion lymphoma (PEL) is a lymphoid proliferation related to Kaposi sarcoma herpesvirus 8/human herpesvirus 8 (KSHV/HHV8) that affects mainly human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infected individuals but can also occur in other immunodeficiency settings. It is characterized by lymphomatous effusions in different serous body cavities without the presence of a detectable tumor mass. The diagnosis is challenging and the clinical outcomes are poor. Aim: The aim of this paper is to report a rare case of PEL in a man who have sex with women (MSW) with HIV-1/2 infection, history of visceral Kaposi sarcoma (KS) and the development of a seronegative arthritis previous to the lymphoproliferative disease diagnosis. PEL presented with ascites, was treated with high-dose chemotherapy and autologous stem cell transplantation, with a good clinical outcome. Case Presentation: We describe a case of a 48-year-old HIV-1/2-infected patient from a high HHV8 seroprevalent country, hospitalized following a three-month history of increased abdominal volume and general constitutional symptoms. Laboratory data revealed normocytic normochromic anemia and a high level of lactate dehydrogenase. A diagnostic paracentesis was performed with cytology compatible with high-grade B-cell lymphoma. Peritoneal fluid cytology showed large lymphoid cells expressing leucocyte-common antigen CD45 without expression of the CD20 antigen (B-lymphocytes) and positivity for HHV8 by immunocytochemical staining, compatible with the diagnosis of PEL.
