Sorafenib was the first multikinase inhibitor to be approved for use in metastatic renal cell carcinoma. Olmesartan medoxomil used in treatment of hypertension and was reported to inhibit angiogenesis in several models. The present study was designed to assess the safety of a combination of sorafenib plus olmesartan compared to monotherapies in mice bearing Ehrlich’s ascites carcinoma cell line. Mice were divided to seven groups, 1) normal mice, 2) Ehrlich’s ascites carcinoma control, 3 - 5) olmesartan (3, 10, 30 mg/kg/day), respectively, 6) sorafenib (30 mg/kg/day) and 7) the combination group: mice received olmesartan (30 mg/kg/day) plus sorafenib. All drug treatments continued for 21 days. At the end of the experiment, a complete blood count was performed and kidney and liver functions were estimated. The combination therapy produced a non-significant change in most of the measurements of complete blood count and liver enzymes when compared to normal animals. On the other hand, the combined therapy significantly increased blood urea nitrogen when compared to normal group but did not change the serum creatinine level. Concomitant administration of olmesartan with sorafenib did not significantly augment the toxicity of the later. Therefore;olmesartan might be a safe candidate with sorafenib in treatment of cancer if clinical data proved the benefit of this combination.

Background: Malassezia folliculitis is an infection of the hair follicle, which commonly affects young adult, and is often misdiagnosed as truncal acne. Objectives: To shed light on different clinical, histopathological, and microbiological aspects of Malassezia folliculitis and to be compared with truncal acne. Patients and Methods: This is a descriptive comparative cross sectional, out patient based study, which was conducted at the Department of Dermatology, Basrah Teaching Hospital from October 2008 to October 2009. Total number of 113 patients with papular and/or pustular follicular skin lesions on the trunk were enrolled in this study. They were divided according to the clinical features, Wood’s light examination, direct microscopic examination, PAS stained skin biopsy and the response to a trial of antifungal drugs into two groups: group 1: patient with Malassezia folliculitis and group 2: patient with truncal acne vulgaris. Results: Group 1: They were 53(46.9%) out of a total 113, 33(62.3%) males and 20(37.7%) females, their ages ranged from 19 - 40 years. Group 2 consisted of 60(53.1%) patients, 25(41.6%) males and 35(58.4%) females, whose ages ranged from 14 - 29 years. The ages were earlier in the acne group in comparison with MF group (p Malassezia folliculitis was more common among males than females, while in truncal acne, females predominated males. The center of the back was the predominant site among MF group affecting (90.6%) of patients with sparing the face, in contrast to truncal acne where the periphery of the back was involved in (91.7%) and the face in (75%) (p 0.0001). Wood’s light examination, skin scrapping and PAS stained skin biopsies were also positive in all patients with MF in contrast to acne group where all these tests were negative. All MF patients showed marked response to a two weeks trial of antifungal while the reverse is true for the acne patients, whereas the antibiotic was the second most common leading aggravating factor in

The main objective of this paper is to estimate the plume dispersion parameters in lateral direction (σy) and vertical direction (σz) by using power law wind speed and the scheme of eddy diffusivity in unstable condition. Comparison among our model and algebraic [1] and integral [2] formulations were held. We find that our model and two other models are in agreement with observed data.

The advantages of measuring hepatic oxidative status in liver biopsy are that it helps in diagnosis of hepatic dysfunction, reflects the degree of deterioration in the liver tissues, and helps to determine the severity of hepatic injury. We aimed to study the oxidative stress state in children with chronic hepatitis by using indirect approach in which antioxidant enzymes such as glutathione peroxidase (GPX), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) are determined in the liver tissue. The present study included 21 children and adolescents (12 males, 9 females) suffering from chronic hepatitis. Patients were selected from the Hepatology Clinic, New Children’s Hospital, Cairo University from November 2006 till 2009 and compared with a group of 7 children who happened to have incidental normal liver biopsy. Children with chronic hepatitis had mean age 8.12 ± 1.15 years. It was further subdivided into 2 subgroups: chronic viral heaptitis (n = 13) and cryptogenic hepatitis (n = 8). GPX, SOD and CAT levels were measured in fresh liver tissue (cell free homogenates) using ELISA. In chronic hepatitis group;there was a significant increase in the hepatic GPX activity (38.59 ± 35.82 nmol/min/ml) as compared to the control group (10.62 ± 6.68 nmol/min/ml). Also a significant correlation was observed between SOD and both ALT (r = 0.87, p < 0.05) and AST (r = 0.74, p < 0.05). GPX correlated with ALT (r = 0.80, p < 0.05) level in the chronic viral hepatitis subgroup. Our findings suggest that oxidative stress could play a role in the pathogenesis of chronic hepatitis. These preliminary results are encouraging to conduct more extensive clinical studies combining antioxidant therapy with various treatments.

Aqueous and hydro-alcoholic extracts of Achillea fragrantissima L. (Asteraceae) grown in Jordan were screened for their antioxidant, antimicrobial, antiplatelet, anti-proliferative and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibition efficacy. Total phenols and flavonoids were determined colorimetrically. The radical scavenging activities were evaluated using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2’-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid (ABTS) radical scavenging activity assays. High performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLCMS) analysis resulted in the identification of 7 phenolic compounds in the hydro-alcoholic extract and 4 compounds in the aqueous extract;quercetin 3-β-D-glucoside was the main component for both extracts. Antimicrobial activities were determined by antimicrobial susceptibility testing such as agar well-diffusion method, minimum inhibition concentration and minimum bactericidal concentration. Gram positive bacteria showed sensitivity to hydro-alcoholic extract in the agar-well diffusion test. No significant activity was observed against gram negative bacteria and Candida albicans. Hydro-alcoholic extract had a bactericidal activity against Streptococcus pneumoniae and Bacillus cereus at high concentrations (MIC 12.5 mg/ml) rather than inhibitory effect. In vitro antiplatelet activity was tested on human whole blood using an electrical impedance method. At concentrations (50, 100, and 200 μg/ml), no effect on platelet aggregation was noticed. Anti-proliferative activity was investigated using the MTT assay. At concentrations up to 200 μg/ml, extracts did not possess cytotoxic activity against the MCF-7 cells. Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitory capacity of A. fragrantissima extracts was tested using TLC assay method, and neither aqueous, nor hydroalcoholic extracts showed AChE inhibition. The interactions of HSA with DA have received great attention nowadays due to its significant effect in the biomedical field and overall health. The main aim of this work is to examine the interaction between DA and HSA at physiological conditions. Upon addition of DA to HSA, the fluorescence emission was quenched with quenching constant Kq = 1.32 × 109 L⋅mol−1⋅s−1 and the binding constant of DA with HSA is found to be K = 4.4 × 102 mainly indicating dynamic quenching. The HSA conformation was altered upon binding of DA to HSA with an increase in α-helix and a decrease in β-sheets suggesting unfolding of HSA secondary structure due to weak intermolecular interaction with HSA. In view of the evidence presented, it is important to understand the details of the interactions of HSA with DA which will be crucial in the design of new DA-inspired drugs and help revealing vital details to better understand the HSA’s role as a transporter for many drugs.

The glass system xBi2O3-(30 – x)CdO-10B2O3-20Fe2O3-40P2O5 (0 ≤ x ≤ 30 weight %), has been prepared by the melt quenching technique. The thermal stability of the glasses, their hardness as well as their chemical durability have been investigated before and after subjecting to different gamma ray doses to insure the validity of this glass system for application to the problem of the permanent disposal for nuclear wastes. The results indicated that the glasses have well to excellent chemical durability, thermal stability and hardness with increasing Bi2O3 content on the expense of CdO, and that the effect of irradiation with gamma doses is very small.
