the reactions π-p→ηn and γp→ηp are investigated within a dynamical coupled-channels model of meson production reactions in the nucleon resonance region. the meson-baryon channels included are πN, ηN, π-, σN, and ρN. the direct η-photoproduction process is studied within a formalism based on a chiral constituent quark model approach, complemented with a one-gluon-exchange mechanism, to take into account the breakdown of the SU(6)O(3) symmetry. In the models search, the following known nucleon resonances are embodied: S11(1535), S11(1650), P11(1440), P11(1710), P13(1720), D13(1520), D13(1700), D15(1675), and F15(1680). Data for the π-p→ηn reaction from threshold up to a total center-of-mass energy of W ≈ 2 GeV are satisfactorily reproduced. For the photoproduction channel, two additional higher mass known resonances, P13(1900) and F15(2000), are also considered. However, reproducing the data for γp→ηp requires, within our approach, two new nucleon resonances, for which we extract mass and width.

In situ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy(ARPES)and scanning tunneling spectroscopy(StS)have been used to study the electronic structure of Pb thin films grown on a Si(111)*** experiments reveal that the electronic structure near the Fermi energy is dominated by a set of m-shaped subbands because of strong quantum confinement in the films,and the tops of the m-shaped subbands form an intriguing ring-like Van Hove *** with theoretical calculations,we show that it is the Van Hove singularity that leads to an extremely high density of states near the Fermi energy and the recently reported strong oscillations(with a period of two monolayers)in various properties of Pb films.

Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is the sixth most common cancer in the *** majority of patients with HCC present with unresectable *** patients have historically had limited treatment options secondary to HCC demonstrating chemoresistance to the currently available systemic ***, normal liver parenchyma has shown intolerance to tumoricidal radiation doses,limiting the use of external beam *** of these limitations,novel percutaneous liver-directed therapies have emerged. the targeted infusion of radioactive microspheres (radioembolization)represents one such therapy. Radioembolization is a minimally invasive transcatheter therapy through which radioactive microspheres are infused into the hepatic arteries that supply tumor. Once infused,these microspheres traverse the hepatic vascular plexus and selectively implant within the tumor *** within the arterioles, the 90Y impregnated microspheres emit high energy and low penetrating radiation doses selectively to the *** has recently shown promise for the treatment of patients with unresectable HCC. the objective of this review article is to highlight twocurrently available radioembolic devices(90Y,188Rh)and provide the reader with a recent review of the literature.

A fully coherent free electron laser(FEL) seeded with a higher-order harmonic(HH) pulse from high-order harmonic generation(HHG) is successfully operated for a sufficiently prolonged time in pilot user experiments by using a timing drift feedback. For HHG-seeded FELs, the seeding laser pulses have to be synchronized with electron bunches. Despite seeded FELs being non-chaotic light sources in principle, external laser-seeded FELs are often unstable in practice because of a timing jitter and a drift between the seeding laser pulses and the accelerated electron bunches. Accordingly,we constructed a relative arrival-timing monitor based on non-invasive electro-optic sampling(EOS). the EOS monitor made uninterrupted shot-to-shot monitoring possible even during the seeded FEL operation. the EOS system was then used for arrival-timing feedback with an adjustability of 100 fs for continual operation of the HHG-seeded FEL. Using the EOS-based beam drift controlling system, the HHG-seeded FEL was operated over half a day with an effective hit rate of 20%–30%. the output pulse energy was 20 μJ at the 61.2 nm wavelength. towards seeded FELs in the water window region, we investigated our upgrade plan to seed high-power FELs with HH photon energy of 30–100 e V and lase at shorter wavelengths of up to 2 nm through high-gain harmonic generation(HGHG) at the energy-upgraded SPring-8Compact SASE Source(SCSS) accelerator. We studied a benefit as well as the feasibility of the next HHG-seeded FEL machine with single-stage HGHG with tunability of a lasing wavelength.

the primary objective of the Deci-hertz Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory （DECIGO） mission is to detect and observe black holes’ and galactic binaries’ gravitational waves （GWs）, at frequencies ranging from 10-2 to 101 Hz. this low-frequency range is inaccessible to ground-based interferometers, due to unshieldable background noise, -and the fact that ground-based interferometers are limited to a few kilometers in length. Our research is focused on efforts to stabilize semiconductor-, Nd:YAG- and fiber-lasers, for use as GW detectors’ optical sources. In present-day- and future detectors, frequency- and phase-noise may place certain limitations on sensitivity and stability. Our goals （shared with scientists around the world） are;first, to design robust experiments that will measure a variety of noises （- random-walk FM, flicker-FM, white FM, flicker PM and white PM）, in order to verify existing models, and second, -to find ways to reduce sensitivity to spurious noise. Current models predict a variety of frequency- and phase-dependent noise slopes, but, a conclusive distinction between noise-models can only be made when the exact points at which the noises occurred are known. In order to increase the sensitivity of the experiment, the laser frequency is stabilized to an atomic-frequency-reference by a feedback-loop control system.

AIM: to investigate whether intra-procedural diffusion- weighted magnetic resonance imaging can predict response of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) during trans- catheter arterial chemoembolization (tACE). MEtHODS: Sixteen patients (15 male), aged 59 ±11 years (range: 42-81 years) underwent a total of 21 separate treatments for unresectable HCC in a hybrid magnetic resonance/interventional radiology suite. Ana- tomical imaging and diffusion-weighted imaging (b = 0, 500 s/mm2) were performed on a 1.5-t unit. tumor enhancement and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC, mm2/s) values were assessed immediately before and at 1 and 3 mo after tACE. We calculated the percent change (PC) in ADC values at all time points. We compared follow-up ADC values to baseline values using a paired t test (α = 0.05). RESULtS: the intra-procedural sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values (%) for detecting a complete or partial 1-mo tumor response using ADC PC thresholds of ±5%, ±10%, and ±15% were 77, 67, 91, and 40; 54, 67, 88, and 25; and 46, 100, 100, and 30, respectively. there was no clear predictive value for the 3-mo follow-up. Compared to baseline, the immediate post-procedure and 1-mo mean ADC values both increased; the latter obtaining statistical significance (1.48 ± 0.29 mm2/s vs 1.65 ± 0.35 × 10-3 mm2/s, P tra-procedural ADC changes of > 15% predicted 1-mo anatomical HCC response with the greatest accuracy, and can provide valuable feedback at the time of tACE.
