Seismic response evaluation of base-isolated reinforced concrete buildings under bidirectional excitation

This paper reports on an investigation of the seismic response of base-isolated reinforced concrete buildings, which considers various isolation system parameters under bidirectional near-fault and far-fault motions. Three-dimensional models of 4-, 8-, and 12-story base-isolated buildings with nonlinear effects in the isolation system and the superstructure are investigated, and nonlinear response history analysis is carried out. The bounding values of isolation system properties that incorporate the aging effect of isolators are also taken into account, as is the current state of practice in the design and analysis of base-isolated buildings. The response indicators of the buildings are studied for near-fault and far-fault motions weight-scaled to represent the design earthquake （DE） level and the risk-targeted maximum considered earthquake （MCER） level. Results of the nonlinear response history analyses indicate no structural damage under DE-level motions for near-fault and far-fault motions and for MCER-level far-fault motions, whereas minor structural damage is observed under MCER- level near-fault motions. Results of the base-isolated buildings are compared with their fixed-base counterparts. Significant reduction of the superstructure response of the 12-story base-isolated building compared to the fixed-base condition indicates that base isolation can be effectively used in taller buildings to enhance performance. Additionally, the applicability of a rigid superstructure to predict the isolator displacement demand is also investigated. It is found that the isolator displacements can be estimated accurately using a rigid body model for the superstructure for the buildings considered.

LionRank: lion algorithm-based metasearch engines for re-ranking of webpages

Due to the rapid growth of the web, the process of collecting the relevant web pages based on the user query is one of the major challenging tasks in recent days. Hence, it is very complicated for the users to know the most relevant information even though various search engines are widely employed. To deal with users' trouble in identifying the relevant information from the web, we have proposed a meta-lion search engine to capture and analyze the ranking scores of various search engines and thereby, generate the re-ranked score results. Accordingly, LionRank, a lion algorithm-based meta-search engine is proposed for the re-ranking of the web pages. Here, different features like text based, factor based, rank based and classifier based features are used by the underlying search engines. In classifier based feature extraction,we have used the fuzzy integrated extended nearest neighbor(FENN) classifier to include the semantics in feature extraction. Moreover, an intelligent re-ranking process is proposed based on the lion algorithm to fuse the features scores optimally. Finally, the results of the proposed LionRank is analyzed with the web page database collected through four benchmark queries, and the quantitative performance are analyzed using precision, recall, and F-score. From the results, we proved that the proposed LionRank obtained the maximum F-score of 81% as compared with that of existing search engines like QuadRank, Outrank, Google,Yahoo, and Bing.

The objective of this study is to identify system parameters from the recorded response of base isolated buildings,such as USC hospital building,during the 1994 Northridge *** state measurements are not available for ***,the response is nonlinear due to the yielding of the lead-rubber *** new approaches are presented in this paper to solve the aforementioned ***,a reduced order observer is used to estimate the unmeasured ***,a least squares technique with time segments is developed to identify the piece-wise linear system *** observer is used to estimate the initial conditions needed for the time segmented identification.A series of equivalent linear system parameters are identified in different time *** is shown that the change in system parameters,such as frequencies and damping ratios,due to nonlinear behavior of the lead-rubber bearings,are reliably estimated using the presented *** is shown that the response was reduced due to yielding of the lead-rubber bearings and period lengthening.

Unraveling the intricacies of mammalian fertilization

It is imperative to understand the molecular basis of various steps involved during fertilization. In the manuscript by Bianchi et al.1 a novel protein, Juno on egg membrane （oolemma） has been characterized that binds to sperm specific protein, Izumo-1. Monoclonal antibodies against Juno inhibited in vitro fertilization. Juno knock-out female mice failed to deliver litters on mating. It is rapidly shed from oolemma after fertilization, suggesting its role in preventing polyspermy. Taken together these studies will help in our understanding of sperm-egg recognition mechanisms and also facilitate development of new fertility treatment regimens and novel contraceptives.

A Hybrid Offline-Online Approach to Adaptive Downlink Resource Allocation Over LTE

Radio resource management mechanisms in current and future wireless networks is expected to face an enormous challenge due to the ever increasing demand for bandwidth and latency sensitive applications on mobile devices. This is because an optimal resource allocation scheme which attempts to multiplex the available bandwidth in order to maximize Quality of service(QoS), will pose an exponential computational burden at eNodeB. In order to minimize such computational overhead, this work proposes a hybrid offline-online resource allocation strategy which effectively allocates all the available resources among flows such that their QoS requirements are satisfied. The flows are firstly classified into priority buckets based on real-time criticality factors. During the offline phase, the scheduler attempts to maintain the system load within a pre-specified safe threshold value by selecting an appropriate number of buckets. This offline selection procedure makes use of supervisory control theory of discrete event systems to synthesize an offline scheduler. Next, we have devised an online resource allocation strategy which runs on top of the offline policy and attempts to minimize the impact of the inherent variability in wireless networks. Simulation results show that the proposed scheduling framework is able to provide satisfactory QoS to all end users in most practical scenarios.

Experimental investigations on wear properties of Palm kernel reinforced composites for brake pad applications

The use of asbestos material is being avoided to manufacture the brake pads as it is harmful and toxic in nature. Further it leads to various health issues like asbestosis, mesothelioma and lung cancers. These brake pads can be replaced by natural fibers like Palm kernel (0-50%), Nile roses (0-15%) and Wheat (0-10%) with additives like aluminum oxide (5%-20%) and graphite powder (10%-35%). Phenolic resin of 35% is utilized as a binder. Particulated Nile roses are used to increase the friction coefficient and wheat powder is used to reduce the wear rate. Aluminum oxide and graphite are abrasive in nature. This helps to make brake pads with high friction co-efficient and less wear rate with low noise pollution. The wear of the proposed composites have been investigated at different speeds. Various tests like wear on pin-ondisc apparatus, hardness on the Rockwell hardness apparatus and oil absorption test have been conducted. Phenolic resin produces good bonding nature to fiber. Thus, Fibers found to have performed palatably among all commercial brake pads. The objective of the research indicates that Palm kernal shell could be a conceivable alternative for asbestos in friction coating materials.

Acrosome reaction： relevance of zona pellucida glycoproteins

During mammalian fertilisation, the zona pellucida （ZP） matrix surrounding the oocyte is responsible for the binding of the spermatozoa to the oocyte and induction of the acrosome reaction （AR） in the ZP-bound spermatozoon. The AR is crucial for the penetration of the ZP matrix by spermatozoa. The ZP matrix in mice is composed of three glycoproteins designated ZP1, ZP2 and ZP3, whereas in humans, it is composed of four （ZP1, ZP2, ZP3 and ZP4）. ZP3 acts as the putative primary sperm receptor and is responsible for AR induction in mice, whereas in humans （in addition to ZP3）, ZP1 and ZP4 also induce the AR. The ability of ZP3 to induce the AR resides in its C-terminal fragment. O-linked glycans are critical for the murine ZP3-mediated AR. However, N-linked glycans of human ZP1, ZP3 and ZP4 have important roles in the induction of the AR. Studies with pharmacological inhibitors showed that the ZP3-induced AR involves the activation of the Gi-coupled receptor pathway, whereas ZP1- and ZP4-mediated ARs are independent of this pathway. The ZP3-induced AR involves the activation of T-type voltage-operated calcium channels （VOCCs）, whereas ZP1- and ZP4-induced ARs involve both T- and L-type VOCCs. To conclude, in mice, ZP3 is primarily responsible for the binding of capacitated spermatozoa to the ZP matrix and induction of the AR, whereas in humans （in addition to ZP3）, ZP1 and ZP4 also participate in these stages of fertilisation.

The maximum demand of power utilization is increasing exponentially from base load to peak load in day to day *** power demand may be either industrial usage or household *** meet this high maximum power demand by the consumer,one of the options is the integration of renewable energy resources with conventional power generation *** the present scenario,wind energy system is one of the methods to generate power in connection with the conventional power *** the load on the conventional grid system increases,various bus voltages of the system tend to decrease,causing serious voltage drop or voltage instability within the *** view of this,identification of weak buses within the system has become *** paper presents the line indices method to identify these weak buses,so that some corrective action may be taken to compensate for this drop in *** attempt has been made to compensate these drops in voltages by integration of renewable energy *** wind energy system at one of the bus in the test system is integrated and the performance of the system is verified by calculating the power flow(PF)using the power system analysis tool box(PSAT)and line indices of the integrated test *** PF and load flow results are used to calculate line indices for the IEEE-14 bus test system which is simulated on PSAT.

Phytopharmacological Profile of Jasminum Grandiflorum Linn.(Oleaceae)

Plants are the real basis towards animal life and are also central to people＇s livelihood. The contributions of the plants in performing varied religious celebrations and in other multiple beneficiaries like medicine, human happiness as well as in treating deadly diseases can never be neglected. In treating diseases, the plants and their constituents are better choice than any other synthetic chemical. The nature has been kind enough to provide the human beings with various types of medicinal plants and in the real sense these form the storehouse of curing almost all the ailments. Consequently, most of the drugs which are being used in preparing formulations have their origin and roots in the plants which form the chief natural source of medicines. Even in modern era, the plant-derived drugs are being extensively used, either in their original or semi-synthetic form. It is because their natural phytoconstituents are highly innocuous posing relatively fewer or no side effects. Based upon their observations, analysis and experience, our ancestors used many plants for medicinal purposes and thus their efforts need to be supported by scientific evidence. Jasminum grandiflorum Linn. is one of such important plants. It has been extensively used by the tribes all over India to treat different diseases which mainly include body pains, toothache, stomach ache, ulcers, and sexual impotency. Chemistry of the plant revealed the presence of mainly secoiridoids, terpenoids, flavonoids and tannins. Not much scientific support was given to the folklore claims for this plant but some of its traditional uses were investigated like spasmolytic, wound healing, antimicrobial, angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor, antiulcer and antioxidant activities. This article is the review of research works done on the plant Jasminum grandiflorum Linn. to date. As a part of it the local names, morphology, traditional claims, chemistry and pharmacological activities have been discussed.
