Identification of a high frequency of chromosomal rearrangements in the centromeric regions of prostate cancer patients

The aim of the present investigation was to study the major chromosomal aberrations (CA) lik. deletion, translocation, inversion and mosaic in prostate cancer patients of Tamilnadu, Southern India. Totally 45 blood samples were collected from various hospitals in Tamilnadu, Southern India. Equal numbers of normal healthy subjects were chosen after signing a consent form. Volunteers provided blood samples (5 ml) to establish leuk.cyte cultures. Cytogenetic studies were performed by using Giemsa-banding technique and finally the results were ensured by spectral k.ryotyping (Sk.) technique. In the present investi-gation, major CA lik. deletion, translocation, inversion and mosaic were identified in experimental subjects. Results showed frequent CA in chromosomes 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9, 13, 16, 18 and X. In comparison with experimental subjects, the control subjects exhibited very low levels of major CA (P<0.05). In the present study, the high frequency of centromeric rearrangements indicates a potential role for mitotic irregularities associated with the centromere in prostate cancer tumorigenesis. Identification of chro-mosome alterations may be helpful in understanding the molecular basis of the disease in better manner.

This paper presents the simulation and implementation of a reconfigurable pixel that serves both data acquisition and energy harvesting purposes. The main topic focuses on switching between the two operating modes of the photodiode: photoconductive and photovoltaic modes. This proposed model can be used to design novel optical sensors with energy harvesting capability, such as position sensitive device(PSD) and complementary metal oxide semiconductor(CMOS) image sensors, which can extend the battery lifetime of the whole optical system. Thus, we can overcome power supply problems lik. wiring and changing batteries frequently, especially in hard-to-reach places lik. space(cube satellites) or even underwater wireless optical communication(UWOC). The proposed pixel architecture offers the advantage of a minimalistic design with only four transistors. Nevertheless, it does come with a drawback.in the form of higher noise levels. The simulation was achieved using MATLAB, and the implementation was performed using the programmable system-on-chip(PSo C) microcontroller. The results showed that the functionality of the dual-function pixel is correct, and the scheduling of both energy harvesting and signal sensing functions was successfully achieved.

Chronic pancreatitis (CP) is a progressive inflammatory disorder of the pancreas. It is predominantly idiopathic (with an unk.own cause) in India and mostly due to alcohol in the West. Diabetes that occur secondary to chronic pancreatitis (T3c Diabetes) is often brittle, and is difficult to attain normoglycemia with conventional treatment requiring multiple doses of insulin. Mild and severe model of CP was induced in mice by repeated intraperitoneal injections of cerulein and L-arginine respectively with an intent to study islet dysfunction and develop therapeutic strategy in animal models of CP. Dietary intervention of epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) was tested in both the models of CP for its beneficial effects on insulin secretory functions. Pancreata collected upon euthanasia were used to study alterations in the morphology of pancreatic parenchyma and inflammation by staining with H&E and fibrotic changes by Masson’s trichrome and picrosirius staining. Insulin secretory functions of islets were evaluated to test the efficacy of the dietary intervention on β-cell functions. Intraperitoneal glucose tolerance test was performed to monitor the glucose homeostasis before and after the dietary intervention. Both the models resulted in CP with dispersed acini, inflammation and fibrosis. The loss of acini and extent of fibrosis was more in L-arginine model. 2-fold improvement in glucose-stimulated insulin secretory functions of islets was observed with 0.5% EGCG dietary intervention in cerulein model of CP and 1.6-fold in L-arginine model of CP. A further improvement in insulin secretion by 3.2-fold was observed with additional dietary supplements lik. N-acetyl cysteine, curcumin in combination with EGCG. Our results thus demonstrate and highlight the therapeutic potential of dietary green tea (EGCG) supplementation in reversing islet dysfunction and improving glucose homeostasis in experimental chronic pancreatitis in mice.

Back.round Soil microbial communities affect above-ground plant diversity and community composition by influencing plant growth performance. Several studies have tested the effect of soil bacterial microbiome on growth performance of native and invasive plants, but the influence of specific bacterial isolates has not been ***, we investigated the effects of soil bacterial exclusion by soil sterilization and by inoculation of Streptomyces rhizobacterial isolates on the growth performance of native and invasive Prosopis *** Plant growth performance of invasive P. juliflora was significantly reduced when grown in sterilized soils,whereas native P. cineraria showed enhanced growth performance in the sterilized soils. When grown in the soil inoculated with the specific Streptomyces isolate from P. juliflora(PJ1), the growth performance of invasive P. juliflora was significantly enhanced while that of native P. cineraria seedlings was significantly reduced. However, inoculation of P. cineraria and P. juliflora seedlings with Streptomyces isolate from the rhizosphere of native P. cineraria(PC1) had no significant effect on the growth performances either of P. juliflora or P. *** Our study reveals that invasive P. juliflora experiences positive feedback.from the non-native soil bacterial community, while the native P. cineraria experiences negative feedback.from its soil bacterial community. Our results provide fresh experimental evidence for the enemy release hypothesis, and further our understanding of the contrasting growth-promoting effects of differentially recruited microbial species belonging to the same genus(Streptomyces)in the rhizospheres of alien invasive and native plants.

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing for improving the performance of terahertz channel

Terahertz( THz) communication is considered to be one of the demanding technology for the upcoming 5G standards. The incredible demand for high rate through wireless channel necessitates the use of THz frequency for communication. The development of communication systems in this frequency band possess technical challenges as the characteristic of THz band is very different from the present wireless channel. However,the advancements in the development of transceiver and antenna systems are rapidly bringing the THz communication into reality. The high path loss in THz band limits the communication range of this channel. Even,for a distance of few meters( >5 m),the absorption coefficient is very high and hence the performance of the system is poor. Performance over this frequency channel can be enhanced by considering transmission windows over this band instead of the entire band. The transmission windows are the frequencies over which the absorption is relatively low. Though there is an improvement in the performance with this adaptive modulation scheme,but not sufficient for longer distance. Apart from path loss,the frequency selective nature of this high bandwidth channel is also a major reason for the poor performance of THz channel. Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing( OFDM) is a promising solution to mitigate the effects of frequency selective nature of the wireless channel. OFDM has been exploited in this paper to improve the performance of terahertz channel. The results show that the Bit Error Rate( BER) of the terahertz channel is considerably improved with OFDM.
