Prevalence of occult hepatitis B virus infection in haemodialysis patients from central Greece

AIM:To assess the hepatitis B virus(HBV)-DNA and the prevalence of occult HBV infection in end-stage renal failure(eSRF)patients from Central Greece. MeTHODS:Sera from 366 eSRF patients attending five out of six dialysis units from Central Greece were investigated for HBV-DNA by real-time polymerase chain *** serum samples with repeatedly detectable HBV-DNA were considered *** antibodies to hepatitis C virus(anti-HCV)were tested by a third generation enzyme linked immunosorbent assay(eLISA),while IgG antibodies to hepatitis e virus (anti-HeV)were tested by two commercially available ***:HBV-DNA was detected in 15/366 patient (4.1%)and HBsAg in 20/366(5.5%).The prevalenc of occult HBV infection was 0.9%(3/346 HBsAg negative patients).Occult HBV was not associate with a specific marker of HBV infection or anti-HCV o anti-HeV *** was no significant differenc in HBV-DNA titres,demographic and biochemica features,between patients with occult HBV infectio and those with HBsAg-positive chronic HBV infection. CONCLUSION:In central Greece,4%of eSRF patient had detectable HBV-DNA,though in this setting,th prevalence of occult HBV seems to be very low(0.9%).

Heterochromatin Protein 1 （HP1） is a major regulator of chromatin structure and function. In animals, the network of proteins interacting with HP1 is mainly associated with constitutive heterochromatin marked by H3K9me3. HP1 physically interacts with the putative ortholog of the SNF2 chromatin remodeler ATRX, which controls deposition of histone variant H3.3 in mammals. In this study, we show that the Arabidopsis thaliana ortholog of ATRX participates in H3.3 deposition and possesses specific conserved domains in plants. We found that plant Like HP1 （LHP1） protein interacts with ATRX through domains that evolved specifically in land plant ancestors. Loss of ATRX function in Arabidopsis affects the expression of a limited subset of genes controlled by PRC2 （POLYCOMB RePReSSIVe COMPLeX 2）, including the flowering time regulator FLC. The function of ATRX in regulation of flowering time requires novel LHPl-interacting domain and ATPase activity of the ATRX SNF2 helicase domain. Taken together, these results suggest that distinct evolutionary pathways led to the interaction between ATRX and HP1 in mammals and its counterpart LHP1 in plants, resulting in distinct modes of transcriptional regulation.

Differences in neuroplasticity after spinal cord injury in varying animal models and humans

Rats have been the primary model to study the process and underlying mechanisms of recovery after spinal cord injury. Two weeks after a severe spinal cord contusion, rats can regain weight-bearing abilities without therapeutic interventions, as assessed by the Basso, Beattie and Bresnahan locomotor scale. However, many human patients suffer from permanent loss of motor function following spinal cord injury. While rats are the most understood animal model, major differences in sensorimotor pathways between quadrupeds and bipeds need to be considered. Understanding the major differences between the sensorimotor pathways of rats, non-human primates, and humans is a start to improving targets for treatments of human spinal cord injury. This review will discuss the neuroplasticity of the brain and spinal cord after spinal cord injury in rats, non-human primates, and humans. A brief overview of emerging interventions to induce plasticity in humans with spinal cord injury will also be discussed.

Flare-induced signals in polarization measurements during the X2.6 flare on 2005 January 15

Flare-induced signals in polarization measurements which were manifested as apparent polarity reversal in magnetograms have been reported since 1981. We are motivated to further quantify the phenomenon by asking two questions： can we distinguish the flare-induced signals from real magnetic changes during flares, and what we can learn about flare energy release from the flare-induced signals？ We select the X2.6 flare that occurred on 2005 January 15, for further study. The flare took place in NOAA active region （AR） 10720 at approximately the central meridian, which makes the interpretation of the vector magnetograms less ambiguous. We have identified that flare-induced signals during this flare appeared in six zones. The zones are located within an average distance of 5 Mm from their weight center to the main magnetic neutral line, have an average size of （0.6±0.4） ×10^17 cm^2, duration of 13±4 min, and flux density change of 181±125 G in the area of reversed polarity. The following new facts have been revealed by this study：（1） the flare-induced signal is also seen in the transverse magnetograms but with smaller magnitude, e.g., about 50 G; （2） the flare-induced signal mainly manifests itself as apparent polarity reversal, but the signal starts and ends as a weakening of flux density; （3） The flare-induced signals appear in phase with the peaks of hard X-ray emission as observed by the Ramaty High energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager （RHeSSI）, and mostly trace the position of RHeSSI hard X-ray footpoint sources. （4） in four zones, it takes place cotemporally with real magnetic changes which persist after the flare. Only for the other two zones does the flux density recover to the pre-flare level immediately after the flare. The physical implications of the flare-induced signal are discussed in view of its relevance to the non-thermal electron precipitation and primary energy release in the flare.

Design and in vivo characterization of kidney-targeting multimodal micelles for renal drug delivery

One in three Americans is at risk for developing chronic kidney disease （CKD） and end-stage renal disease （eSRD）, leading to the need for dialysis or a kidney transplant. Small-molecule drugs have been proposed as therapies to manage kidney diseases, but high dosages are often required to achieve therapeutic efficacy, generating off-target side effects, some of which are lethal. To address these limitations, we developed a novel kidney-targeting multimodal micelle （KM） system for drug delivery applications. SpecificaU~ we incorporated the kidney-targeting peptide （Lysine-Lysine-Glutamic acid-Glutamic acid-Glutamic acid）3-Lysine）（（KKeee）3K） into micelles. This peptide binds to megalin, a multi-ligand cell surface receptor present on renal tubule cells. When incubated with human kidney proximal tubule cells, KMs were found to be biocompatible in vitro. In vivo, KMs showed higher accumulation in the kidneys as compared to a non-targeted （NT） control upon intravenous injection in wild-type C57BL/6J mice. Histological evaluation showed no signs of tissue damage, while blood urea nitrogen （BUN） and creatinine levels were within normal ranges, validating the preservation of kidney health upon micelle administration. To our knowledge, this is the first utilization of （KKeee）BK in a nanoparticle formulation, and our study offers strong evidence that this novel nanoparticle platform can be used as a candidate drug delivery carrier to direct therapeutics to diseased tissue in CKD.

Understanding the factors that facilitate the emergence of cooperation among organisms is central to the study of social evolution. Spotted hyenas Crocuta crocuta frequently cooperate to mob lions Panthera leo, approaching the lions as a tightknit group while vocalizing loudly in an attempt to overwhelm them and drive them away. Whereas cooperative mobbing behavior has been well documented in birds and some mammals, to our knowledge it has never been described during interactions between 2 apex predators. Using a 27-year dataset, we characterize lion-hyena encoun- ters, assess rates of mobbing behavior observed during these interactions, and inquire whether mobbing results in successful acquisition of food. Lions and hyenas interacted most often at fresh kills, especially as prey size and the number of hyenas present increased. Possession of food at the beginning of an interaction positively affected retention of that food by each predator species. The presence of male lions increased the probability of an interspecific interaction but decreased the likelihood of hyenas obtaining or retaining possession of the food. Hyena mobbing rates were highest at fresh kills, but lower when adult male lions were present. The occurrence of mobbing was predicted by an increase in the number of hyenas present. Whether or not mobbing resulted in acquisition of food from lions was predicted by an increase in the number of mobs formed by the hyenas present, suggesting that cooperation among hyenas enhances their fitness.
