As human populations become concentrated in larger,more intensely urbanized areas connected through glob-alization,the relationships of cities to their surrounding landscapes are open to social,ecological,and economic *** particular,the value of access to nature in the form of nearby undeveloped wildland to ur-ban populations implies a relatively novel type of synergistic city-region *** develop a robust and replicable metric-the urban-wildland juxtaposition(UWj)-that quantifies critical dimensions of the juxtapo-sition of the urbanicity of cities with the quantity of nearby unbuilt wildlands,based on the spatial proximity and relative intensities of these two contrasting system *** a distance-decay gravity model,this analysis provides documentation on the calculation of the UWj and its component metrics,urbanicity(U)and wildland(W)and then presents U,W,and UWj metrics for 36 urbanized areas representing all regions of the U.S.,pro-viding the basis for comparisons and *** explore the potential of the metric by testing correlations with“creative class”employment and public health *** UWj has implications and potential applications for demographic,economic,social,and quality-of-life trends across the *** internationally.

Background: Active video games(AVGs) encourage whole body movements to interact or control the gaming system, allowing the opportunity for skill development. Children with autism spectrum disorder(ASD) show decreased fundamental movement skills in comparison with their typically developing(TD) peers and might benefit from this approach. This pilot study investigates whether playing sports AVGs can increase the actual and perceived object control(OC) skills of 11 children with ASD aged 6–10 years in comparison to 19 TD children of a similar *** was a secondary ***: Actual(Test of Gross Motor Development) and perceived OC skills(Pictorial Scale of Perceived Movement Skill Competence for Young Children) were assessed before and after the intervention(6 × 45 min).Results: Actual skill scores were not improved in either group. The ASD group improved in perceived skill. All children completed the required dose and parents reported the intervention was ***: The use of AVGs as a play-based intervention may not provide enough opportunity for children to perform the correct movement patterns to influence skill. However, play of such games may influence perceptions of skill ability in children with ASD, which could improve motivation to participate in physical activities.

Social epigenomics is a new field of research that studies how the social environment shapes the epigenome and how in turn the epigenome modulates *** focus on describing known gene-environment interactions(GEIs)and epigenetic mechanisms in different mammalian social *** illustrate how epigenetic mechanisms integrate GEIs,we highlight examples where epigenetic mechanisms are associated with social behaviors and with their maintenance through neuroendocrine,locomotor,and metabolic *** discuss future research trajectories and open questions for the emerging field of social epigenomics in nonmodel and naturally occurring social ***,we outline the technological advances that aid the study of epigenetic mechanisms in the establishment of GEIs and vice versa.

In March 2023,a converted bomber took off from Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska,USA,carrying a payload of delicate scientific instruments(Fig.1).Operated by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration(NOAA),the flight aimed to collect a plethora of information about the Earth’s *** exploration sounds routine,but the mission’s goal is unusual for a government entity:to inform policy decisions surrounding large-scale,deliberate interventions to alter the stratosphere for climate change mitigation[1].The approach of deflecting sunlight to cool the planet,called solar radiation management or solar geoengineering,was long considered a fringe *** with recent funding and attention from government agencies like NOAA,the approach is moving mainstream.

This paper presents optimal generation and detection of wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) signals with advanced modulation formats. We investigate the relative phase alignment between phase modulation and data bits for chirped return-to-zero (CRZ) signals, and the frequency offset between the RZ carrier and various optical filters for vestigial side band (VSB)-RZ signals.

Turbidity is used as a surrogate for suspended sediment concentration(SSC),and as a regulatory tool for indicating land use disturbance and environmental *** relates linearly to suspended material,however,can show non-linear responses to particulate organic matter(POM),concomitant with changes in particle size distribution(PSD).In the paper the influence of ultra-fine particulate matter(UFPM) on specific turbidity and its association with POM in suspended sediment are shown for alpine rivers in the Southern Alps of New *** approach was two-fold:a field-based investigation of the relations between SSC,POM,and turbidity sampled during event flow;and experimental work on hydrodynamic particle size effects on SSC POM,PSD,and *** turbidity changes over event flow and are sensitive to increasing proportional amounts of sand,UFPM,and POM in ***,the UFPM is the size fraction(<6 μm) where POM *** implications of the current study are that the slopes of turbidity-SSC relations are undesirable in locations that may be dominated by cyclic release of POM or distinct pulses of fine-grained *** locations where the turbidity-SSC slopes approximate 2,the POM proportion is usually <10% of the total suspended ***,when turbidity-SSC slopes are <1 this is likely caused by high amounts of side-scatter from UFPM concomitant with higher proportions of ***,the use of turbidity as a proxy for determining SSC may have serious consequences for the measurement of representative suspended sediment data,particularly in locations where POM may be a significant contributor to overall suspended load.

Metabolic engineering and synthetic biology endeavors benefit from promoters that perform consistently(or robustly)with respect to cellular growth phase(exponential and stationary)and fermentation scale(microtiter plates,tubes,flasks,and bioreactors).However,nearly all endogenous promoters(especially in Saccharomyces cerevisiae)do not perform in this *** this work,a hybrid promoter engineering strategy is leveraged to create novel synthetic promoters with robustness across these *** a multi-dimensional RNA-seq dataset,promoters with specific phase dependencies were *** enriched with functional transcription factors were identified using MEME *** motif-containing fragments could impart activity dependence in the opposing ***,we obtain two new promoters with high and consistent expression across both phases by increasing the exponential phase activity of the starting stationary-phase scaffold by 38 and 23-fold ***,we show that these promoters function consistently across various laboratory growth scales over time in a microtiter plate and in ***,this work presents and validates a new strategy for engineering promoters in *** with high levels of expression that are robust to cellular growth phase and the scale of the culture.
