Quantifying Hydrologic and Water Quality Responses to Bioenergy Crops in Town Creek Watershed in Mississippi

Bioenergy crops are considered as a feedstock source, which can be grown in marginal soils. However, these crops may have different levels of crop yield potential and environmental benefits. The objectives of this study were to model and compare the effects of four bioenergy crops (corn—Zea mays, soybean—Glycine max (L.) Merr., miscanthus—Miscanthus-giganteus, and switchgrass—Panicum virgatum) in the Town Creek watershed (TCW) in northeast Mississippi using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model. The calibrated SWAT model for TCW was used to quantify impacts to streamflow, crop yield, and sediment yield. The SWAT model reasonably (edicted long-term (January, 1990 to September, 2009) monthly streamflow (25.88 m3·s-1) from the TCW when compared with the USGS observed stream flow (29.34 m3·s-1. In addition, model reasonably predicted (±6%) average annual corn yield (4.66 Mg·ha-1) and soybean yield (1.42 Mg·ha-1) as compared to National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) reported average annual corn (4.96 Mg·ha-1) and soybean yield (1.34 Mg·ha-1) from the watershed. Further, the model simulated results from this study determined that long-term average annual feedstock yield from TCW is the greatest when growing miscanthus grass (817,732 Mg) followed by switchgrass (477,317 Mg), corn (236,132 Mg), and soybeans (65,235 Mg). The SWAT model predicted the greatest annual average sediment yield (6.62 Mg·ha-1) from continuous corn crop scenario while the perennial grasses (switchgrass and miscanthus) had the lowest sediment yield (2.91 Mg·ha-1 and 3.20 Mg·ha-1 respectively). DNNGP, a deep neural network-based method for genomic prediction using multi-omics data in plants

Genomic prediction is an effective way to accelerate the rate of agronomic trait improvement in *** methods typically use linear regression models with clear assumptions;such methods are unable to capture the complex relationships between genotypes and ***-linear models(e.g.,deep neural networks)have been proposed as a superior alternative to linear models because they can capture complex non-additive *** we introduce a deep learning(DL)method,deep neural network genomic prediction(DNNGP),for integration of multi-omics data in *** trained DNNGP on four datasets and compared its performance with methods built with five classic models:genomic best linear unbiased prediction(GBLUP);two methods based on a machine learning(ML)framework,light gradient boosting machine(LightGBM)and support vector regression(SVR);and two methods based on a DL framework,deep learning genomic selection(DeepGS)and deep learning genome-wide association study(DLGWAS).DNNGP is novel in five ***,it can be applied to a variety of omics data to predict ***,the multilayered hierarchical structure of DNNGP dynamically learns features from raw data,avoiding overfitting and improving the convergence rate using a batch normalization layer and early stopping and rectified linear activation(rectified linear unit)***,when small datasets were used,DNNGP produced results that are competitive with results from the other five methods,showing greater prediction accuracy than the other methods when large-scale breeding data were ***,the computation time required by DNNGP was comparable with that of commonly used methods,up to 10 times faster than ***,hyperparameters can easily be batch tuned on a local *** with GBLUP,LightGBM,SVR,DeepGS and DLGWAS,DNNGP is superior to these existing widely used genomic selection(GS)***,DNNGP can generate robust assessments from diverse datasets,including omics data

Storage and Timed Release of Acetaminophen from Porous Carbonaceous Materials

Six carbon powders with varied surface areas and porosities were used to store and release acetaminophen (ACT). A 10 mg/mL solution of acetaminophen in phosphate buffer solution (pH = 7.0) at 25℃ with exposure to carbon powder for 72 hours was used to drive the maximum loading of acetaminophen into the powders. Carboxen 1012 (BeT surface area of1500 m2/g) powder exhibited the greatest maximum adsorption of ACT (up to 62% by mass). The maximum ACT adsorption was correlated with surface area and porosity. The most effective carbon powders for binding ACT were ones containing high mesopore volumes. Loaded carbon powder was separated from the ACT solution and then phosphate buffer solution (pH = 7.0) was combined with the loaded carbon powder and ACT absorbance readings at 243 nm were taken over time. The various carbon powders were able to release a portion of the ACT that they originally adsorbed. The Carboxen 1012 powder displayed the greatest ACT release with a rapid initial release followed by a steady but slightly declining release over a time period of 2 to 11 weeks. The results were supportive of mesoporous carbons such as Carboxen 1012 being suitable for drug loading and release.

Immiscible metallic melts in the deep earth: clues from moissanite(SiC)in volcanic rocks

The occurrence of moissanite(SiC), as xenocrysts in mantle-derived basaltic and kimberlitic rocks sheds light on the interplay between carbon, hydrogen and oxygen in the lithospheric and sublithospheric mantle. SiC is stable only at fO2e the lithospheric mantle and related melts commonly are considered to be much more oxidized. SiC grains from both basaltic volcanoclastic rocks and kimberlites contain metallic inclusions whose shapes suggest they were entrapped as melts. The inclusions consist of Si^0+ Fe3Si7± FeSi2 Ti ± CaSi2Al2± FeSi2Al3± CaSi2, and some of the phases show euhedral shapes toward Si^0. Crystallographically-oriented cavities are common in SiC, suggesting the former presence of volatile phase(s), and the volatiles extracted from crushed SiC grains contain H2+ CH4± CO2± *** observations suggest that SiC crystalized from metallic melts(Si-Fe-Ti-C ± Al ± Ca), with dissolved H2+ CH4± CO2± CO derived from the sublithospheric mantle and concentrated around interfaces such as the lithosphere-asthenosphere and crust-mantle boundaries. When mafic/ultramafic magmas are continuously fluxed with H2+ CH4 they can be progressively reduced, to a point where silicide melts become immiscible, and crystallize phases such as SiC. The occurrence of SiC in explosive volcanic rocks from different tectonic settings indicates that the delivery of H2+ CH4 from depth may commonly accompany explosive volcanism and modify the redox condition of some lithospheric mantle volumes. The heterogeneity of redox states further influences geochemical reactions such as melting and geophysical properties such as seismic velocity and the viscosity of mantle rocks.

Pregnancy Craving and Pica: 60 Years Later

Purpose: To study pregnancy craving and pica in a cohort of women and compare our findings to a historic study. Methods: Prospective survey of women in the third trimester of pregnancy. Data were collected using the same questionnaire from a study published in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1957. All surveys were conducted by clinicians at 35 0/7-41 6/7 weeks gestational age. High risk pregnancies were excluded. Results: We included 547 women in the analysis. Of those, 60.8% reported food craving vs 65.7% in the 1957 cohort, p-value 0.09. The most common food craving was fruit, seen in 31.1% vs 13.6%, p-value p-value 0.00001. The cohorts differed in fruit craving, (31.1% vs 13.6%), meat, poultry, fish, dry beans, eggs, and nuts (21.0% vs 5.0%), milk, yogurt, and cheese, (17.0% vs 2.2%) and vegetable, (14.1% vs 6.9%), all with p-value e="font-family:V

Prevalence of occult hepatitis B virus infection in haemodialysis patients from central Greece

AIM:To assess the hepatitis B virus(HBV)-DNA and the prevalence of occult HBV infection in end-stage renal failure(eSRF)patients from Central Greece. MeTHODS:Sera from 366 eSRF patients attending five out of six dialysis units from Central Greece were investigated for HBV-DNA by real-time polymerase chain *** serum samples with repeatedly detectable HBV-DNA were considered *** antibodies to hepatitis C virus(anti-HCV)were tested by a third generation enzyme linked immunosorbent assay(eLISA),while IgG antibodies to hepatitis e virus (anti-HeV)were tested by two commercially available ***:HBV-DNA was detected in 15/366 patient (4.1%)and HBsAg in 20/366(5.5%).The prevalenc of occult HBV infection was 0.9%(3/346 HBsAg negative patients).Occult HBV was not associate with a specific marker of HBV infection or anti-HCV o anti-HeV *** was no significant differenc in HBV-DNA titres,demographic and biochemica features,between patients with occult HBV infectio and those with HBsAg-positive chronic HBV infection. CONCLUSION:In central Greece,4%of eSRF patient had detectable HBV-DNA,though in this setting,th prevalence of occult HBV seems to be very low(0.9%).
