Bioaccum.lative and biom.gnifying contam.nants, such as persistent organic pollutants （POPs） and m.rcury （Hg）, have for decades been recognized as a health concern in arctic m.rine biota. In recent years, global clim.te change （GCC） and related loss of arctic sea ice have been observed to be driving substantial change in arctic ecosystem.. This review sum.arizes findings docum.nting em.irical links between GCC-induced ecological changes and alterations in POP and Hg exposures and pathways in arctic m.rine ecosystem.. m.st of the studies have reported changes in POP or Hg concentrations in tissue in relation to GCC-induced changes in species trophic interactions. These studies have typically focused on the role of changes in abun- dance, habitat range or accessibility of prey species, particularly in relation to sea ice changes. Yet, the ecological change that re- suited in contam.nant trend changes has often been unclear or assum.d. Other studies have successfully used chem.cal tracers, such as stable nitrogen and carbon isotope ratios and fatty acid signatures to link such ecological changes to contam.nant level variations or trends. Lower sea ice linked-diet changes/variation were associated with higher contam.nant levels in som. popula- tions of polar bears, ringed seals, and thick-billed m.rres, but the influence of changing trophic interactions on POP levels and trends varied widely in both m.gnitude and direction. We suggest that future research in this new area of GCC-linked ecotox- icology should focus on routine analysis of ancillary ecological m.trics with POP and Hg studies, sim.ltaneous consideration of the m.ltiple m.chanism. by which GCC and contam.nant interactions can occur, and targeted research on changing exposures and toxicological effects in species known to be sensitive to both GCC and contam.nants [Current Zoology 61 （4）： 617-628, 2015].

Background: One of the main objectives of hospital managements is to control the length of stay (LOS). Successful control of LOS of inpatients will result in reduction in the cost of care, decrease in nosocomial infections, medication side effects, and better management of the limited number of available patients’ beds. The length of stay (LOS) is an important indicator of the efficiency of hospital management by improving the quality of treatment, and increased hospital profit with more efficient bed management. The purpose of this study was to model the distribution of LOS as a function of patient’s age, and the Diagnosis Related Groups (DRG), based on electronic medical records of a large tertiary care hospital. Materials and Methods: Information related to the research subjects were retrieved from a database of patients admitted to King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia between January 2014 and December 2016. Subjects’ confidential information was masked from the investigators. The data analyses were reported visually, descriptively, and analytically using Cox proportional hazard regression model to predict the risk of long-stay when patients’ age and the DRG are considered as antecedent risk factors. Results: Predicting the risk of long stay depends significantly on the age at admission, and the DRG to which a patient belongs to. We demonstrated the validity of the Cox regression model for the available data as the proportionality assumption is shown to be satisfied. Two examples were presented to demonstrate the utility of the Cox model in this regard.

Proteins containing an Rho GTPase-activating protein （RhoGAP） dom.in work as m.lecular switches involved in the regulation of diverse cellular functions. The ability of these GTPases to regulate a wide num.er of cellular processes com.s from.their interactions with m.ltiple effectors and inhibitors, including the RhoGAP fam.ly, which stim.lates their intrinsic GTPase activity. Here, a phylogenetic approach was applied to study the evolutionary relationship am.ng 59 RhoGAP dom.in-containing proteins. The sequences were aligned by their RhoGAP dom.ins and the phylogenetic hypotheses were generated using m.xim.m.Parsim.ny and Bayesian analyses. The character tracing of two traits, GTPase activity and presence of other dom.ins, indicated a significant phylogenetic signal for both of them.

This study exam.nes whether a group of captive false killer whales(P seudorca crassidens) showed variations in the vocal rate around feeding tim.s. The high level of m.tivation to express appetitive behaviors in captive anim.ls m.y lead them.to respond with changes of the behavioral activities during the tim. prior to food deliveries which are referred to as food anticipatory activity. False killer whales at Qingdao Polar Ocean World(Qingdao, China) showed signifi cant variations of the rates of both the total sounds and sound classes(whistles, clicks, and burst pulses) around feedings. Precisely, from.the Transition interval that recorded the lowest vocalization rate(3.40 s/m.d), the whales increased their acoustic em.ssions upon trainers' arrival(13.08 s/m.d). The high rate was m.intained or intensifi ed throughout the food delivery(25.12 s/m.d), and then reduced im.ediately after the anim.ls were fed(9.91 s/m.d). These changes in the false killer whales sound production rates around feeding tim.s supports the hypothesis of the presence of a food anticipatory vocal activity. Although sound rates m.y not give detailed inform.tion regarding referential aspects of the anim.l com.unication it m.ght still shed light about the arousal levels of the individuals during different social or environm.ntal conditions. Further experim.nts should be perform.d to assess if variations of the tim. of feeding routines m.y affect the vocal activity of cetaceans in captivity as well as their welfare.
