Retinal structural-vascular-functional relationship using optical coherence tomography and optical coherence tomography -angiography in myopia

Background:To examine the retinal structure–vascular-function relationship using optical coherence tomography(OCT)and optical coherence tomography angiography(OCTA)in ***:This was a prospective cross-sectional study comprising 86 eyes of 45 individuals with varying axial lengths and spherical equivalents and no posterior segment *** eyes underwent optical coherence tomography with the Spectralis SD-OCT and OCTA with RTVue-XR Avanti;*** macular retinal layer thicknesses and flow areas and vessel densities were measured on OCT and OCTA,*** correlations were made between the macular layer thicknesses,flow areas and vessel densities with axial length,spherical equivalent and visual ***:The participants’mean ages were 33.34±14.45 years,mean spherical equivalent refractions were−7.17±5.71 D and axial lengths were 25.95±2.41 *** were significant positive correlations of foveal angle(r=0.757,p=0.001),inner retinal(r=0.764,p=0.001)and outer plexiform layer(r=0.771,p=0.001)thickness on OCT and vessel densities in deep capillary plexus(r=0.313,p=0.003)on OCTA with axial length and negative correlations with spherical equivalents and visual *** negative correlations of outer nuclear layer(r=−0.560,p=0.03)and photoreceptor outer segment layer thickness(r=−0.856,p<0.001)were noted on OCT with axial length and positive correlations with spherical equivalents and visual ***:The lateral retinal stretching in myopia could possibly explain the correlation between retinal layer thickness,vascular density and visual acuity in these *** research is required to investigate this.

Studying the Importance of <i>VacA</i>Gene of <i>Helicobacter pylori</i>in Identifying the Pathogenicity of Strains by Comparing It with the Disease Status of the Subjects

Introduction: H. pylori is a primary pathogen isolated by Warren and Marshall in 1983. They called it as Campylobacter Pylori and in 1989 Goodwin et al. renamed it as Helicobacter pylori. Helicobacter pylorus is one of the responsible factors for causing gastritis, Peptic ulcer disease and is strongly associated with gastric carcinoma and gastric Malt lymphoma. Materials and Methods: In this study 300 biopsies were collected at Deccan College of Medical Sciences and Allied Hospitals, Hyderabad, India. Of these, 101 patients had peptic ulcer, 95 patients had gastritis and 4 had gastric carcinoma. A total of four gastric biopsy specimens were collected. One was used for culturing H. pylori, one for histological lesions and the remaining two one each from the antrum & corpus was collected in phosphate buffered saline for the DNA analysis. Results: Helicobacter pylori were isolated from many of the biopsies and the identification of Helicobacter pylori was confirmed in 200 biopsies with colony characteristics, Biochemical tests, and 16S rRNA amplification. The presence of VacA marker was detected by using appropriate primers. From the data obtained in our study, in a total of 169/200 isolates s1 region was found in 84.1% and s2 was found in 36/200 i.e. 18% of the isolates. In the middle region, m1awas found in 60/200 which was 30%, m1b was found in 60/200 i.e. 60% and m2 was found in 114/200 i.e. 57.1% of the isolates. Conclusion: Thus, VacA detection might be helpful for determination of which patients are at highest risk for severe clinical outcomes such as duodenal ulcer, gastric ulcer or gastric carcinoma and eventually, to define strategies for the treatment or prevention of H. pylori infection.

Cardioprotective activity of alcoholic extract of Tinospora cordifolia (Willd.) Miers in calcium chloride-induced cardiac arrhythmia in rats

The present study investigated the antiarrhythmic activity of alcoholic extract of Tinospora cordifolia （T. cordifolia） in CaCl2 induced arrhythmia. CaCl2 （25 mg/kg） was administered by intravenous infusion （iv） to produce arrhythmia in rats. The animals were then treated with T. cordifolia extract （150, 250, and 450 mg/kg） and verapamil （5 mg/kg,iv）. Lead II electrocardiogram was monitored. Plasma calcium, sodium and potassium levels were measured. In CaCl2 induced arrhythmia, heart rate was decreased by 41.10%, T. cordifolia at 150, 300, and 450 mg/kg decreased the heart rate by 26.30%, 29.16%, and 38.29%, respectively, and verapamil reduced the heart rate by 9.70% compared to the normal group. The PQRST waves were normalized and atrial and ventricular fibrillation was controlled in rats treated with verapamil and T. cordifolia. CaCl2 increased calcium and sodium levels and decreased potassium levels in blood. T. cordifolia dose-dependently decreased calcium and sodium levels and increased potassium levels. Hence, T. cordifolia can be used in antiarrhythmic clinical settings and beneficial in atrial and ventricular fibrillation and flutter and may be indicated in ventricular tachyarrhythmia.

Chromium detoxification mechanism induced growth and antioxidant responses in vetiver(Chrysopogon zizanioides(L.) Roberty)

This study investigated the chromium(Cr)detoxification mechanism-induced changes in growth and antioxidant defence enzyme activities in Chrysopogon *** growth decreased by 36.8%and 45.0%in the shoots and roots,respectively,in the 50 mg/L Cr *** accumulation was higher in root(9807μg/g DW)than in shoots(8730μg/g DW).Photosynthetic pigments and malondialdehyde content increased up to the 30 mg/L Cr treatment,whereas they declined at higher *** activity of superoxide dismutase(SOD),catalase(CAT)and peroxidase(POX)were increased significantly with increasing of Cr dose but slightly declined at higher *** banding patterns revealed the expression of multiple bands for SOD,CAT and POX enzymes,and the band intensity decreased at high doses of Cr *** results indicate that higher Cr doses increased the oxidative stress by over production of reactive oxygen species(ROS)in vetiver that had potential tolerance mechanism to Cr as evidenced by enhanced level of antioxidative enzymes,photosynthetic pigments,MDA ***,vetiver has evolved a mechanism for detoxification and accumulates higher concentration of toxic *** study provides a better understanding of how vetiver detoxifies Cr.

Involvement of adenosine and standardization of aqueous extract of garlic(Allium sativum Linn.)on cardioprotective and cardiodepressant properties in ischemic preconditioning and myocardial ischemia-reperfusion induced cardiac injury

The present study investigated the effect of garlic （Allium sativum Linn.） aqueous extracts on ischemic pre- conditioning and ischemia-reperfusion induced cardiac injury, as well as adenosine involvement in ischemic pre- conditioning and garlic extract induced cardioprotection. A model of ischemia-reperfusion injury was established using Langendorff apparatus. Aqueous extract of garlic dose was standardized （0.5%, 0.4%, 0.3%, 0.2%, 0.1%, 0.07%, 0.05%, 0.03%, 0,01%）, and the 0.05% dose was found to be the most effective. Higher doses （more than 0.05%） were highly toxic, causing arrhythmia and cardiodepression, whereas the lower doses were ineffective. Garlic exaggerated the cardioprotective effect of ischemic preconditioning. The cardioprotective effect of ischemic preconditioning and garlic cardioprotection was significantly attenuated by theophylline （1,000 ~tmol/L） and 8-SPT （10 mg/kg, i.p.） and expressed by increased myocardial infarct size, increased LDH level, and reduced nitrite and adenosine levels. These findings suggest that adenosine is involved in the pharmacological and molecular mechanism of garlic induced cardioprotection and mediated by the modulation of nitric oxide.

Extensional collapse of the Gondwana orogen: Evidence from Cambrian mafic magmatism in the Trivandrum Block, southern India

The assembly of Late Neoproterozoice Cambrian supercontinent Gondwana involved prolonged subduction and accretion generating arc magmatic and accretionary complexes, culminating in collision and formation of high grade metamorphic orogens. Here we report evidence for mafic magmatism associated with post-collisional extension from a suite of gabbroic rocks in the Trivandrum Block of southern Indian Gondwana fragment. Our petrological and geochemical data on these gabbroic suite show that they are analogous to high Fe tholeiitic basalts with evolution of the parental melts dominantly controlled by fractional crystallization. They display enrichment of LILE and LREE and depletion of HFSE with negative anomalies at Zre Hf and Ti corresponding to subduction zone magmatic regime. The tectonic affinity of the gabbros coupled with their geochemical features endorse a heterogeneous mantle source with collective melt contributions from sub-slab asthenospheric mantle upwelling through slab break-off and arc-related metasomatized mantle wedge, with magma emplacement in subduction to post-collisional intraplate settings. The high Nb contents and positive Nbe Ta anomalies of the rocks are attributed to inflow of asthenospheric melts containing ancient recycled subducted slab components and/or fusion of subducted slab materials owing to upwelling of hot asthenosphere. Zircon grains from the gabbros show magmatic crystallization texture with low U and Pb content. The LA-ICPMS analyses show ^(206) Pb/^(238) U mean ages in the range of 507-494 Ma suggesting Cambrian mafic magmatism. The post-collisional mafic magmatism identified in our study provides new insights into mantle dynamics during the waning stage of the birth of a supercontinent.
