An unsettling explanation for the failure of skatole-baited ovitraps to capture Culex mosquitoes

Culex mosquitoes are primarily found in temperate and tropical regions worldwide where they play a crucial role as main vectors of filarial worms and arboviruses. In recife, a northeast city in Brazil, high densities of Culex quinquefasciatus are often found in association with human populated areas. In marked contrast to another part of the city, field tests conducted in the neighborhood of sitio dos Pintos showed that trapping of mosquitoes in skatole-baited ovitraps did not differ significantly from captures in control (water) traps. Thus, classical and molecular taxonomic approaches were used to analyze the Culex species circulating in sitio dos Pintos. results obtained from both approaches agreed on the cocirculation of Culex quinquefasciatus and Culex nigripalpus in three different areas of this neighborhood. What was initially considered as an unexpected failure of this lure turned out to be a more unsettling problem, that is, the first report in recife of Culex nigripalpus, a vector of Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus and West Nile virus. Unplanned urbanization processes close to remnants of the Atlantic forest, such as observed in sitio dos Pintos, may have contributed to the introduction of Cx. nigripalpus in urban areas.

Measuring ammonia(NH_(3))volatilization from urea-fertilized soils is crucial for evaluation of practices that reduce gaseous nitrogen(N)losses in *** small area of chambers used for NH_(3)volatilization measurements compared with the size of field plots may cause significant errors if inadequate sampling strategies are *** aims were:i)to investigate the effect of using multiple open chambers on the variability in the measurement of NH_(3)volatilization in urea-amended field plots and ii)to define the critical period of NH_(3)-N losses during which the concentration of sampling effort is capable of reducing *** use of only one chamber covering 0.015%of the plot(51.84 m^(2))generates a value of NH_(3)-N loss within an expected margin of error of 30%around the true *** reduce the error margin by half(15%),3–7 chambers were required with a mean of 5 chambers per *** the sampling efforts in the first two weeks after urea application,which is usually the most critical period of N losses and associated errors,represents an efficient strategy to lessen uncertainty in the measurements of NH_(3)*** strategy enhances the power of detection of NH_(3)-N loss abatement in field experiments using chambers.

In areas highly affected by anthropogenic disturbances,artificial(human-made)freshwater ecosystems can provide habitat for maintaining and conserving regional freshwater *** assessed how the physical habitat of artificial ponds affected the structure of benthic macroinvertebrate *** do so,we tested two hypotheses.(1)Physical habitat disturbances are not detrimental to the diversity of nearby artificial ponds,and(2)Physical habitat disturbances do not cause significant shifts in taxonomic *** results rejected both null hypotheses,i.e.,macroinvertebrate diversity metrics correlated significantly and positively with Physical Habitat Integrity index scores,and only sites with high habitat condition scores were significantly associated with sensitive indicator *** results highlight the importance of maintaining physical habitat conditions for sustaining the ecological health of artificial ponds.

Modeling neutral-atmospheric electromagnetic delays in a“big data”world

If left unmodeled,the delay suffered by electromagnetic waves while crossing the neutral atmosphere negatively affects Global Navigation satellite system *** modeling of the delay has been carried out by means of empirical models formulated based on climatological information or using information extracted from numerical weather prediction(NWP)*** paper explores the potential use of meteorological information of several types that will become available with the increasing number of sensors(e.g.a cell phone,or the thermometer of a nearby smart home)in *** can we make use of these potentially huge datasets,which may help to provide the best possible representation of the neutral atmosphere at any given time,as readily and as accurately as possible?This situation falls in the realm of Big Data.A few potential scenarios,a sequential improvement of Marini mapping function coefficients,a self-feeding NWP,and near real-time empirical model updates,are discussed in this *** pros and cons of each approach are discussed in comparison with what is done *** indicate that they have potential for a positive contribution.

Objective To evaluate the chemical composition and effects of Artemisia vulgaris(AV)hydroalcoholic extract(HEAV)on breast cancer cells(MCF-7 and sKBr-3),chronic myeloid leukemia(K562)and NIH/3T3 *** Phytochemical analysis of HEAV was done by high-performance liquid chromatography-mass(HPLC)*** and cell death studies were performed using trypan blue and Annexin/FITC-7AAD,***-1(Fer-1)and necrostatin-1(Nec-1)were used to assess the mode of HEAV-induced cell death and acetoxymethylester(BAPTA-AM)was used to verify the involvement of cytosolic calcium in this *** calcium measurements were made using *** HEAV decreased the viability of MCF-7,sKBr-3 and K562 cells(Preated K562 cells was reduced compared to HEAV-exposed fibroblasts(Preatment of K562 cells with HEAV induced cell death primarily by late apoptosis and necrosis in assays using annexin V-FITC/7-AAD(Pse of Nec-1 and Fer-1 increased the viability of K562 cells treated with HEAV relative to cells exposed to HEAV alone(Prelease mainly from lysosomes in K562 cells(Prthermore,BAPTA-AM,an intracellular Ca^(2+)chelator,decreased the number of non-viable cells treated with HEAV(Psions HEAV is cytotoxic and activates several modalities of cell death,which are partially dependent on lysosomal release of Ca^(2+).These effects may be related to artemisinin and caffeoylquinic acids,the main compounds identified in HEAV.

Use of improved cold-finger technique to assess effects of basicity on heat transfer through solidified mold flux

Cold-finger measurements were used to estimate the contact resistance and average thermal conductivity of mold flux films solidified on a water-cooled copper *** industrial mold fluxes,with basicities from low to high,were *** steady-state rate of convective heat transfer between the solid film and liquid flux was compared with calculations based on natural convection correlations;the comparison indicates that the surface of the solid film(in contact with molten flux)is approximately at its solidus *** roughness of the mold flux film in contact with copper was larger for films grown from higher-temperature mold flux and for higher-basicity mold *** glassy(low-basicity)film had an estimated thermal conductivity of 1.1 W/(m K).The crystalline or partially crystalline films had higher estimated thermal conductivities of 2.2-3.2 W/(m K).The measured values of thermal resistance were extrapolated to typical mold flux film thicknesses for industrial conditions;the extrapolations confirmed that the high contact resistance of higher-basicity mold fluxes can yield higher thermal resistances than the low-basicity *** morphology of the rough interface of higherbasicity mold flux films that gives the higher contact resistance is consistent with that observed in previous work and appears not to be directly related to crystallization.

Exact Computation of the Topology and Geometric Invariants of the Voronoi Diagram of spheres in 3D

In this paper, we are addressing the exact the Voronoi diagram of spheres using Wu＇s algorithm. computation of the Delaunay graph （or quasi-triangulation） and Our main contributions are first a methodology for automated derivation of invariants of the Delaunay empty circumsphere predicate for spheres and the Voronoi vertex of four spheres, then the application of this methodology to get all geometrical invariants that intervene in this problem and the exact computation of the Delaunay graph and the Voronoi diagram of spheres. To the best of our knowledge, there does not exist a comprehensive treatment of the exact computation with geometrical invariants of the Delaunay graph and the Voronoi diagram of spheres. starting from the system of equations defining the zero-dimensional algebraic set of the problem, we are applying Wu＇s algorithm to transform the initial system into an equivalent Wu characteristic （triangular） set. In the corresponding system of algebraic equations, in each polynomial （except the first one）, the variable with higher order from the preceding polynomial has been eliminated （by pseudo-remainder computations） and the last polynomial we obtain is a polynomial of a single variable. By regrouping all the formal coefficients for each monomial in each polynomial, we get polynomials that are invariants for the given problem. We rewrite the original system by replacing the invariant polynomials by new formal coefficients. We repeat the process until all the algebraic relationships （syzygies） between the invariants have been found by applying Wu＇s algorithm on the invariants. Finally, we present an incremental algorithm for the construction of Voronoi diagrams and Delaunay graphs of spheres in 3D and its application to Geodesy.

Animals as sources of food-borne pathogens: A review

Food-producing animals are the major reservoirs for many foodborne pathogens such as Campylobacter species, non-Typhi serotypes of salmonella enterica, shiga toxin-producing strains of Escherichia coli, and Listeria monocytogenes. The zoonotic potential of foodborne pathogens and their ability to produce toxins causing diseases or even death are sufficient to recognize the seriousness of the situation. This manuscript reviews the evidence that links animals as vehicles of the foodborne pathogens salmonella,Campylobacter, shiga toxigenic E. coli, and L. monocytogenes, their impact, and their current status. We conclude that these pathogenic bacteria will continue causing outbr.a.s.and deaths throughout the world, because no effective interventions have eliminated them from animals and food.
