Research foresight in bridging open science and open innovation:Overview based on the complex thinking paradigm

Open innovation benefits from access to cutting-edge discoveries to increase their transformation into tangible applications for the benefit of society.Improving research quality has been proposed as a primary objective of open science by the United Nations,to increase science reproducibility,impact,and trust,leading to robust decision-making and policies.However,opening access to data and processes is insufficient for researchers to achieve open innovation in the context of globalization,for example,by gathering insights from external and internal sources.Developing the appropriate mindset to manage complexity and generate synergy among researchers in academia,industry,and the government is essential to catalyze knowledge and transform it into relevant innovations for society.To gain insights into the roles and challenges of researchers aiming to bridge the gap between open science and open innovation,a decade-plus Mapping Literature Review was conducted based on the complex thinking paradigm.Complex thinking allows for novel connections of the information collected through open science and open innovation,considering different forms of engaging with alternative means of knowledge creation that may promote innovative and critical thinking.The findings revealed:a)broad positioning of the terms in the European Union;b)open access and open data as current driving themes;c)a constant trade-off between the terms“open data”and“information protection”;d)lack of studies on researchers’complex thinking to help them manage openness;e)absence of the environmental helix in the initiatives;and(f)challenges in innovative communication and collaborative practices among public and private entities.Overall,we identified an opportunity to develop researchers’complex thinking such that the openness of information becomes a shared responsibility among partners across multiple helices.This shared responsibility can have methodological implications that permeate how open science and open innovation are theorized and,in practice,facil

Background:Ocular surface disease in glaucoma patients is a significant ocular co-morbidity that can affect 40%to 59%of these patients worldwide.The current study was aimed at evaluating the potential clinical benefit of an intense pulsed light(IPL)-based treatment in glaucomatous patients with ocular surface disease due to prolonged hypotensive eyedrop treatments.To our knowledge,this is the first series analyzing the therapeutic effect of this treatment option in this type of patients.Methods:This non-comparative prospective case series study enrolled a total of 30 glaucoma patients ranging in age from 57 to 94 years old and treated with hypotensive eyedrops for years with dry eye symptomatology.All patients received four sessions of IPL treatment using the Optima IPL system(Lumenis,Yokneam,Israel)adjusted to the official optimized Lumenis setting.Changes in symptomatology,corneal staining,conjunctival hyperemia,non-invasive break-up time(NIBUT),tear osmolarity,tear meniscus height(TMH),meiboscore and meibomian gland expressibility was analyzed after treatment.Results:Statistically significant reductions were observed after IPL treatment in the symptomatology scores measured with different questionnaires[ocular surface disease index(OSDI),standard patient evaluation of eye dryness(SPEED)and symptom assessment questionnaire in dry eye(SANDE)]as well as with the visual analogue scale(P<0.001).Mean change in OSDI was−15.0±11.3.A significant reduction was found after treatment in the corneal staining score(P<0.001).A significant reduction was found in tear film meniscus height(P=0.012),as well as in tear film osmolarity(P=0.001).A significant reduction was also found in meibomian gland expressibility(P=0.003),changing the percentage of grade 3 eyes from 44.4%before IPL to 17.2%after treatment.Conclusions:IPL therapy combined with meibomian gland expression(MGX)seems to be an effective option to improve symptomatology in glaucomatous patients with ocular surface disease due to prolonged hypotensive eyedrop treatment

The tumor microenvironment is an ecosystem composed of multiple types of cells, such as tumor cells, immune cells, and cancerassociated fibroblasts. Cancer cells grow faster than non-cancerous cells and consume larger amounts of nutrients. The rapid growth characteristic of cancer cells fundamentally alters nutrient availability in the tumor microenvironment and results in reprogramming of immune cell metabolic pathways. Accumulating evidence suggests that cellular metabolism of nutrients, such as lipids and amino acids, beyond being essential to meet the bioenergetic and biosynthetic demands of immune cells, also regulates a broad spectrum of cellular signal transduction, and influences immune cell survival, differentiation, and anti-tumor effector function. The cancer immunometabolism research field is rapidly evolving, and exciting new discoveries are reported in high-profile journals nearly weekly. Therefore, all new findings in this field cannot be summarized within this short review. Instead, this review is intended to provide a brief introduction to this rapidly developing research field, with a focus on the metabolism of two classes of important nutrients-lipids and amino acids-in immune cells. We highlight recent research on the roles of lipids and amino acids in regulating the metabolic fitness and immunological functions of T cells, macrophages, and natural killer cells in the tumor microenvironment. Furthermore, we discuss the possibility of “editing” metabolic pathways in immune cells to act synergistically with currently available immunotherapies in enhancing anti-tumor immune responses.

In order to substitute fossil resources in activated carbon(AC)production,recent efforts have focused on the utilization of renewable raw materials.Regions with important wood industries offer two potentially underestimated resource types:forestry residue biomass(FRB)and waste wood(WW).Although these materials are widely available(approx.130 mio.m3a-1 FRB,approx.50 mio.ta^(-1) WW in the EU),they are mostly valorised through energy production,as they are high in ashes and may be contaminated with organics and heavy metals.In this study,both FRB and WW were treated via one-step pyrolysis for AC production.ZnCl_(2) was applied as activating agent at pyrolysis temperatures varying from 400 to 600℃ and residence times between 1 and 3 h.Overall,76 samples were prepared and characterized thoroughly via elemental analysis,N_(2)/CO_(2) ad/-desorption,thermogravimetric analysis(TGA),scanning electron microscopy(SEM),and infrared spectroscopy(FTIR).The produced carbons showed specific surface areas of up to 1430 m2g􀀀1 and a pore size distribution with a micropore share of up to 80%.The presence of oxygen-containing functional groups was confirmed via FTIR.Potential feedstock contamination can be mitigated,as minerals and heavy metals could be leached out(up to-99.15%)by an additional wash step and organic contamination undergoes thermal cracking during pyrolysis.The presented study could be a next step in upcycling considerable waste streams from the wood sector through localised and non-fossil-based AC production.

Rainfed agricultural systems in semiarid Mediterranean environments are subject to erratic but often heavy rainfall events.As an agronomic practice,fallow periods can be included even within the existing European Union common policy for crop diversification.This study aimed to quantify the effects of previous mineral fertilization on soil mineral nitrogen(N_(min))content and potential nitrate leaching during no-till fallow periods of crop rotation.The Leaching Estimation and Chemistry Model(LEACHM)was used for soil N_(min)prediction after fallow.During fallow periods,N_(min)measured in the soil profile increased by an average of 125 kg N ha^(-1),whereas the model showed an average increase of 95 kg N ha^(-1).The amount of nitrogen(N)leached was estimated to be 11–38 kg N ha^(-1).The N balance simulated using LEACHM might differ from the actual situation.The calibrated LEACHM underestimated soil N_(min)after a drought period followed by soil water replenishment,probably due to a pulse in soil C and N mineralization caused by the wetting of dry soil,but overestimated soil N_(min)after occasional rainy spells when soil quickly became saturated,probably due to occasional nitrous oxide emissions not being fully accounted for by the model and specific preferential water flow,which might lead to greater nitrate leaching than that simulated by LEACHM using the convection-dispersion equation.The results show that soil N_(min)measurements after fallow periods cannot be well predicted by LEACHM.The findings of this study provide a support for fertilization planning for crop rotation systems including a fallow period to avoid overfertilization in the following cropping season and reduce N environmental impacts.

Corneal endothelium defects are one of the leading causes of blindness worldwide.The actual treatment is transplantation,which requires the use of human cadaveric donors,but it faces several problems,such as global shortage of donors.Therefore,new alternatives are being developed and,among them,cell therapy has gained interest in the last years due to its promising results in tissue regeneration.Nevertheless,the direct administration of cells may sometimes have limited success due to the immune response,hence requiring the combination with extracellular mimicking materials.In this review,we present different methods to obtain corneal endothelial cells from diverse cell sources such as pluripotent or multipotent stem cells.Moreover,we discuss different substrates in order to allow a correct implantation as a cell sheet and to promote an enhanced cell behavior.For this reason,natural or synthetic matrixes that mimic the native environment have been developed.These matrixes have been optimized in terms of their physicochemical properties,such as stiffness,topography,composition and transparency.To further enhance the matrixes properties,these can be tuned by incorporating certain molecules that can be delivered in a sustained manner in order to enhance biological behavior.Finally,we elucidate future directions for corneal endothelial regeneration,such as 3D printing,in order to obtain patient-specific substrates.

Key stakeholders’ perspectives on the ideal partnering culture in construction projects

This paper examines the current state of project cultures in the German turnkey construction industry and the ideal project cultures in terms of partnering from the perspective of various key stakeholders(i.e.,Investors,General Contractors,(Sub-)Contractors and Designers).To investigate the current and ideal cultures,data were gathered among the key stakeholders by means of a survey study with 72 respondents divided over 12 companies.The respondents rated the current and desired cultures by using the Organizational Culture Assessment Instrument,which belongs to the Competing Values Framework.The investigations show many similarities and differences between the stakeholder perspectives of the current and the idealized partnering project cultures.Mainly,the General Contractors desire more cooperative behaviors than the(Sub-)Contractors,and the Investors desire more pronounced flexibility than the General Contractors.All stakeholders desire a cultural change from highly competitive behaviors toward more cooperation.Changes in terms of clear procedures or more flexibility are only desired by the Designers.Defining both the current and an ideal partnering project culture enables academics and project managers to compare their actual project cultures to an ideal situation.With such an approach,academics and project managers could measure whether new tools or changes in resources affect their project cultures toward a partnering project culture.

BACKGROUND Due to new restrictions on the use of bisphenol A(BPA),industries are beginning to replace it with derived molecules such as bisphenol S and F(BPS and BPF).There is extensive evidence in the academic literature on the potential health effects of BPA,which is known to be a diabetogenic molecule.However,there are few publications related to new compounds derived from BPA.AIM To perform an epidemiological study of urinary BPS and BPF in the American National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(NHANES)cohort,and analyze their possible relationship with diabetes mellitus.METHODS NHANES datasets from 2013 to 2016 were used due to the urinary BPF and BPS availability.Data from 3658 adults were analyzed to perform regression analysis exploring the possible relationship between BPA-derived compounds and diabetes.RESULTS Descriptive statistics,linear regression modeling,and logistic regression analysis revealed a significant relationship between urinary BPS,but not BPF,and diabetes risk.Additionally,a relationship was observed between both compounds and hypertension and a slight relationship between BPF and dyslipidemia.CONCLUSION In the present study,a strong relationship between urinary BPS,not BPF,and diabetes risk has been determined.BPA substitute molecules do not exempt the population from potential health risks.

Bisphenol A(BPA)is a xenoestrogen known for its implications for the endocrine systems and several other organs,including the kidneys.Recent renal studies have shown that BPA can induce alterations of the cytoskeleton and cell adhesion mechanisms such as a podocytopathy with proteinuria and hypertension,alterations involved in the progression of renal diseases.These data and the fact that BPA is known to be present in the urine of almost the entire population strongly suggest the critical need to reevaluate BPA exposures considered safe.
