Accurate estimates of tree carbon, forest floor carbon and organic carbon in forest soils （SOC） are important in order to determine their contribution to global carbon （C） stocks. however, information about these carbon stocks is lacking. Some studies have investigated regional and continental scale patterns of carbon stocks in forest ecosystems; however, the changes in C storage in dif- ferent components （vegetation, forest floor and soil） as a function of elevation in forest ecosystems remain poorly understood. In this study, we estimate C stocks of vegetation, forest floor and soils of a Pinus roxburghii Sargent forest in the Garhwal himalayas along a gradient to quantify changes in carbon stock due to differences in elevation at three sites. The biomass of the vegetation changes drastically with increasing elevation among the three sites. The above-ground biomass （AGB） and below-ground biomass （BGB） were highest at site I （184.46 and 46.386 t·ha^-1 respectively） at an elevation of 1300 m followed by site II （173.99 and 44.057 t·ha^-1 AGB and BGB respectively） at 1400 m and the lowest AGB and BGB were estimated at site III （161.72 and 41.301t·ha^-1） at 1500 m. The trend for SOC stock was similar to that of biomass. Our results suggest that carbon storage （in both soil and biomass） is nega- tively correlated with elevation.

AIM： To investigate the intracellular apoptotic signals engaged by resveratrol in three gastric adenocarcinoma cancer cell lines, two of which （AGS and SNU-1） express p53 and one （KATO-M） with deleted p53. METhODS： Nuclear fragmentation was used to quantitate apoptotic cells; caspase activity was determined by photometric detection of cleaved substrates; formation of oxidized cytochrome C was used to measure cytochrome C activity, and Western blot analysis was used to determine protein expression, RESULTS： Gastric cancer cells, irrespective of their p53 status, responded to resveratrol with fragmentation of DNA and cleavage of nuclear lamins A and B and PARP. Resveratrol, however, has no effect on mitochondria-associated apoptotic proteins Bcl-2, Bcl- xl, Bax, Bid or Smac/Diablo, and did not promote sub-cellular redistribution of cytochrome C, indicating that resveratrol-induced apoptosis of gastric carcinoma cells does not require breakdown of mitochondrial membrane integrity. Resveratrol up-regulated p53 protein in SNU-1 and AGS cells but there was a difference in response of intracellular apoptotic signals between these cell lines. SNU-1 cells responded to resveratrol treatment with down-regulation of survivin, whereas in AGS and KATO- 111 cells resveratrol stimulated caspase 3 and cytochrome C oxidase activities. CONCLUSION： These findings indicate that even within a specific cancer the intracellular apoptotic signals engaged by resveratrol are cell type dependent and suggest that such differences may be related to differentiation or lack of differentiation of these cells.

The hydrogenolysis of carbon–oxygen bonds is an important model reaction in upgrading biomass‐derived furanic compounds to transportation *** of these model reactions,namelyconversion of5‐hydroxymethylfurfural(hMF)to the gasoline additive2,5‐dimethylfuran(DMF),isespecially *** this study,bimetallic Cu‐Co catalysts supported on CeO2,ZrO2,and Al2O3were used for the selective hydrogenolysis of hMF to *** structures of the fresh and usedcatalysts were studied using X‐ray diffraction,the Brunauer‐Emmett‐Teller method,transmissionelectron microscopy,temperature‐programmed reduction by h2,temperature‐programmed desorptionof Nh3,and ChNS *** structures were correlated with the catalytic ***‐Co/CeO2catalyst produced mainly2,5‐bis(hydroxymethyl)furan via reduction of C=O bonds onlarge Cu *** Cu‐Co/Al2O3catalyst gave the best selectivity for DMF,as a result of a combinationof highly dispersed Cu,mixed copper–cobalt oxides,and suitable weak acidic ***‐Co/ZrO2had low selectivity for DMF and produced a combination of variousover‐hydrogenolysis products,including2,5‐dimethyltetrahydrofuran and5,5‐oxybis(methylene)‐bis(2‐methylfuran),because of the presence of strong acidic *** reaction pathways and effectsof various operating parameters,namely temperature,h2pressure,and time,were studied to enableoptimization of the selective conversion of hMF to DMF over the Cu‐Co/Al2O3catalyst.

The most remarkable effect in spinel ferrites is the strong dependence of properties on the state of structural disorder and,in particular,on the cation *** structural characterization of a Co-Zn ferrite nanoparticle sample was reported which prepared by wet chemical co-precipitation *** samples were sintered at three different temperatures viz.650℃,850℃ and 1050℃ for 12 *** structural details like:lattice constant and distribution of cations in the tetrahedral and octahedral interstitial voids have been deduced through X-ray diffraction (XRD) data *** constant was found to increase with the increase in Zn2+ ions and sintering *** intensity ratios of (220),(400),(440) planes were considered,as these reflections are sensitive to cations on the A and B *** agreement of the theoretical intensity ratio with the intensity ratio observed from XRD pattern supports the occupancy of Zn2+ ions and Co2+ ions on the octahedral and tetrahedral sites,respectively.

With the identification of increasing number of chromatin modifiers, histone variants, histone post-translational modifications and their cross-talk, it is essential to validate these findings and interactions in vitro for which pure histone complexes are required. Although, the production of such complexes has been described earlier but still it remains a challenge for a non-specialist lab. here we describe a protocol to quickly obtain large quantities of highly pure histones using bacterial expression system for GST pull-down and reconstitution experiments. In addition, we describe methods to quickly reconstitute and purify h2A/h2B dimers, h3/h4 tetramers and histone octamers for in vitro experiments. We demonstrate that these sub-complexes are properly folded and are hence, true representatives of the actual substrates in vivo. We also show that histones have a propensity to be non-specifically cleaved by proteases. Our results suggest that TEV protease is the most suitable protease while working with histones. The methodology described here should allow researchers to purify histone complexes in three days enabling functional and structural analyses of histone variants, mutants and post-translational modifications.

BACKGROUND:The specificity in discriminating pancreatitis is limited in the positron emission tomography(PET)using ***,PET is not widely available compared to the single photon emission computed tomography(SPECT).Since amino acids play a minor role in metabolism of inflammatory cells,the potential of the SPECT tracer,3-[ 123 I]iodo-L-α-methyltyrosine(123I-IMT),for detecting pancreatic cancer was examined in xenotransplantation models of human pancreatic carcinoma in mice. METhODS: 123 I-IMT was injected to eight mice inoculated with subcutaneous or orthotopic pancreatic *** high-resolution-micro-SPECT(hi-SPECT)and magnetic resonance imaging were *** gene expression level of L amino acid transport-system 1(LAT1)was analyzed and correlated with tumor uptake of 123 I-IMT. Chronic total occlusion of an anomalous right coronary artery arising from left coronary sinus is uncommon. We are describing a case of a 71 years old patient presented with severe chest pain along with exertional dyspnea with an inferior wall myocardial infarction. Coronary angiography showed anomalous right coronary artery originating from left coronary sinus having chronic total occlusion in proximal portion and normal left anterior descending artery and left circumflex artery. We were successful in implanting the two stents at an occlusive region with good angiographic results.

Amaranthus roxburghianus root extract in combination with piperine as a potential treatment of ulcerative colitis in mice

OBJECTIVE： The present work was undertaken to determine the effects of Amaranthus roxburghianus Nevski. （Amaranthaceae） root alone and in combination with piperine in treating ulcerative colitis （UC） in mice. METhODS： Swiss albino mice were divided into seven groups （n = 6）. Standard group received prednisolone （5 mg/kg, intraperitoneally）. Treatment groups received hydroalcoholic extract of roots of A. roxburghianus （50 and 100 mg/kg, per oral） and a combination of hydroalcoholic extract of roots of A. roxburghianus （50 and 100 mg/kg, per oral） and piperine （5 mg/kg, per oral）. Ulcer index, colitis severity, myeloperoxidase （MPO）, malondialdehyde and glutathione were estimated from blood and tissue. Column chromatography of the extract was done and purified fractions were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy （GC-MS）. RESULTS： Treatment with the combination of hydroalcoholic extract of A. roxburghianus and piperine showed minimal ulceration, hemorrhage, necrosis and leucocyte infiltration by histopathological observation. Acetic acid increased MPO levels in blood and colon tissue to 355 U/mL and 385 U/mg, respectively. The combination of hydroalcoholic extract of A. roxburghianus （100 mg/kg） and piperine （5 mg/kg） significantly decreased MPO in blood and tissue to 182 U/mL and 193 U/mg, respectively （P 〈 0.05）. Similarly, this combination significantly reduced malondialdehyde levels and increased glutathione levels in blood and tissue. Various phytoconstituents were detected by GC-MS. CONCLUSION： The combination of hydroalcoholic extract of A. roxburghianus and piperine is effective in the treatment of UC and the effects are comparable with the standard drug prednisolone. 4h-pyran-4-one, 2,3-dihydro-3,5-dihydroxy-6-methyl, eugenol and benzene, and 1-（1,5-dimethyl-4-hexenyl）-4-methyl are reported having analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties; they may play a role in the biological activity of A. roxburghianus root.
