Background： The present work investigated the influence of lignin content and composition in the fungal treatment of lignocellulosic biomass in order to improve rumen degradability. Wheat straw and wood chips,differing in lignin composition, were treated with Lentinula edodes for 0, 2, 4, 8 and 12 wk and the changes occurring during fungal degradation were analyzed using pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and detergent fiber ***： L. edodes preferentially degraded lignin, with only limited cellulose degradation, in wheat straw and wood chips, leaving a substrate enriched in cellulose. Syringyl（S）-lignin units were preferentially degraded than guaiacyl（G）-lignin units, resulting in a decreased S/G ratio. A decreasing S/G ratio（wheat straw： r =-0.72, wood chips： r =-0.75） and selective lignin degradation（wheat straw： r =-0.69, wood chips： r =-0.88） were correlated with in vitro gas production（IVGP）, a good indicator for rumen ***： L. edodes treatment increased the IVGP of wheat straw and wood chips. Effects on IVGP were similar for wheat straw and wood chips indicating that lignin content and 3D-structure of cell walls influence in vitro rumen degradability more than lignin composition.

The richness of spider species on the foliage of mexican ant-acacias in Los Tuxtlas (Veracruz), and Santiago Pinotepa Nacional (Oaxaca) was documented. A total of 11 species, grouped into five families were found;in Los Tuxtlas five species representing two families were identified, whereas in Santiago Pinotepa Nacional, the number of taxa was eight, belonging to five families. The richness of spiders in Santiago Pinotepa Nacional was higher than that found in Los Tuxtlas. In both locations m>Nephila clavipesm> Linnaeus and m>Eustala illicitam> O. Pickard-Cambridge, both from Araneidae, were found;these species had been previously reported as common inhabitants of Central American ant-acacias. The presence of m>E. illicitam> in mexican myrmecophytic acacias was confirmed. A total of 10 species grouped into five families are reported for the first time inhabiting mexican ant-acacias, increasing the richness of spider interactions documented in mexico. This study showed that the occurrence of spiders in the m>Vachellia-Pseudomyrmexm> mutualism system has been overlooked and is likely more common than what has been reported until now. This opens an opportunity for the study of the evolution of spider-ant-plant interactions.

Flexofytol^(■) (A Belgian Curcumin Extract)for the Treatment of Aged Patients with Osteoarthritis and Comorbidity

Introduction: Currently, the therapeutic arsenal of osteoarthritis includes several extracts of Curcuma including Flexofytol®, a bio-optimized extract of Curcuma longa. However, in older patients, indications for treatment might be limited by comorbidity and polymedication. Therefore, we aimed to assess the benefits and risks of Flexofytol®, in an older population with comorbidities. Patients and methods: This retrospective observational study included 31 patients over age 70 years (medianage: 77 years, range 71 - 81) that were treated with Flexofytol for painful osteoarthritis of the knee or lumbar spine. These patients were initially weakened by diabetes (48%) and/or renal insufficiency (71%), or they were taking anticoagulants (35%). The effects of Flexofytol®, were evaluated at 0, 6 and 12 weeks with visual analog scales for pain and disability and the SF-12 Quality of Life questionnaire. Adverse effects and drug interactions of Flexofytol®, were evaluated. In particular, we evaluated renal function, diabetes parameters and coagulation tests. The data were analyzed with Kruskal-Wallis and Wilcoxon-mann-Withney non-parametric tests. Results: Patients with Flexofytol®, showed significant improvement: pain improved by 50% (p = 0.0002) and functional disability improved by 33% (p = 0.0075). A series of quality of life parameters improved within the first 6 weeks of treatment and up to 3 months of treatment without impacting renal function, metabolic parameters or coagulation tests. We observed no significant adverse effects. Conclusion: In conclusion, our results suggested that Flexofytol®, may be useful in the management of painful osteoarthritis, particularly in older patients that are fragile due to comorbidity and polymedication. These initial results must be confirmed in future studies.

mesopores in porous solids can produce a pronounced sorption hysteresis at moderate and high reduced vapor pressures of the ambient gas that is condensed in the pores. Unlike to other conventional porous materials, cement pastes often behave exceptionally. The water sorption hysteresis frequently persists at very low humidity. This hysteresis is reflected in a corresponding hysteresis loop of the solid skeleton volume. We discuss a theoretical model based on the strong compression force exerted by a condensate on the walls of narrow slit pores embedded in an elastic solid. This compression force is shown to be capable of shifting walls of narrow slit pores. Humidity-dependent closing and reopening of slit pores can produce hysteresis loops even at low humidity.

Aging is a key risk factor for cognitive decline and age-related neurodegenerative disorders. Also, an age-related decrease in sex steroid hormones may have a negative impact on the formation of neurofibrillary tangles （NFTs）; these hormones can regulate Tau phosphorylation and the principal kinase GSK3β involved in this process. Hormone replacement therapy decreases NFTs, but it increases the risk of some types of cancer. However, other synthetic hormones such as tibolone （TIB） have been used for hormone replacement therapy. The aim of this work was to evaluate the long-term effects of TIB （0.01 mg/kg and 1mg/kg, intragastrically for 12 weeks） on the content of total and hyperphosphorylated Tau （PHF-1） proteins and the regulation of GSK3β/Akt/PI3K pathway and CDK5/p35/p25 complexes in the hippocampus of aged male mice. We observed that the content of PHF-1 decreased with TIB administration. In contrast, no changes were observed in the active form of GSK3β or PI3K. TIB decreased the expression of the total and phosphorylated form of Akt while increased that of p110 and p85. The content of CDK5 was differentially modified with TIB： it was increased at low doses and decreased at high doses. When we analyzed the content of CDK5 activators, an increase was found on p35; however, the content of p25 decreased with administration of low dose of TIB. Our results suggest a possible mechanism of action of TIB in the hippocampus of aged male mice. Through the regulation of Tau and GSK3β/Akt/PI3K pathway, and CDK5/p35/p25 complexes, TIB may modulate neuronal plasticity and regulate learning and memory processes.

Alcohol use disorder （AUD）, mild traumatic brain injury （mTBI）, and posttraumatic stress disorder （PTSD） commonly co-occur （AUD ＋ mTBI ＋ PTSD）. These conditions have overlapping symptoms which are, in part, reflective of overlapping neuropathology. These conditions become problematic because their co-occurrence can exacerbate symptoms. Therefore, treatments must be developed that are inclusive to all three conditions. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation （rTmS） is non-invasive and may be an ideal treatment for co-occurring AUD ＋ mTBI ＋ PTSD. There is accumulating evidence on rTmS as a treatment for people with AUD, mTBI, and PTSD each alone. However, there are no published studies to date on rTmS as a treatment for co-occurring AUD ＋ mTBI ＋ PTSD. This review article advances the knowledge base for rTmS as a treatment for AUD ＋ mTBI ＋ PTSD. This review provides background information about these co-occurring conditions as well as rTmS. The existing literature on rTmS as a treatment for people with AUD, TBI, and PTSD each alone is reviewed. Finally, neurobiological findings in support of a theoretical model are discussed to inform TmS as a treatment for co-occurring AUD ＋ mTBI ＋ PTSD. The peer-reviewed literature was identified by targeted literature searches using Pubmed and supplemented by cross-referencing the bibliographies of relevant review articles. The existing evidence on rTmS as a treatment for these conditions in isolation, coupled with the overlapping neuropathology and symptomology of these conditions, suggests that rTmS may be well suited for the treatment of these conditions together.

Lizards have been reported as important pollinators on several oceanic *** we evaluate the potential role of Galápagos lava lizards(microlophus spp.)as pollinators across their *** 3 years,we sampled pollen transport by 9 lava lizard species on the 10 islands where they are present,including 7 single-island ***,only 25 of 296 individuals sampled(8.4%)transported pollen of 10 plant species,the most common being Prosopis juliflora,Exodeconus miersii,Sesuvium *** Cordia *** least 8 of these plant species were native,and none were confirmed as introduced to the *** the low overall proportion of individuals carrying pollen,this was observed in 7 of the nine lizard species,and on 8 of the ten main islands(Española,Fernandina,Floreana,Isabela,marchena,Pinta,Santa Cruz and Santiago),suggesting that this is a widespread *** results reported here support the potential role of lava lizards as pollinators across their radiation,although they may represent a relatively modest contribution when compared with birds and ***,we cannot discard that lizards may be ecologically significant for particular plant species and ecosystems given the specific climatic condition and functional diversity of each island.

The general use of smartphones assigns additional relevance to QR codes as a privileged tool to the Internet of Things(IoT).Crucial for QR codes is the evolution to IoT-connected smart tags with enhanced storage capacity and secure *** the concept of super-modules(s-modules)built from adjacent spatial multiplexed modules with regular geometrical shapes,assisted by colour multiplexing,we modelled and design a single QR code with,at least,the triple storage capacity of an analogous size black/white QR code,acting as a smart-tag ensuring restrict access and *** s-modules are printed using luminescent low-cost and eco-friendly inks based on organic-inorganic hybrids modified by lanthanides with multiplexed colour emission in the orthogonal RGB *** access to the restrict information is attained only under UV irradiation and encrypted for secure *** concept of active QR codes for smart trackability and IoT was materialised through the development of a free friendly-user mobile app.
