Importance of overstorey attributes for understorey litter production and nutrient cycling in European forests

Background:In contrast with the negligible contribution of the forest understorey to the total aboveground phytobiomass of a forest,its share in annual litter production and nutrient cycling may be more *** and how this functional role of the understorey differs across forest types and depends upon overstorey characteristics remains to be ***:We sampled 209 plots of the FunDivEUROPE Exploratory Platform,a network of study plots covering local gradients of tree diversity spread over six contrasting forest types in *** estimate the relative contribution of the understorey to carbon and nutrient cycling,we sampled non-lignified aboveground understorey biomass and overstorey leaf litterfall in all *** samples were analysed for C,N and P concentrations,overstorey leaf litterfall for C and N *** additionally quantified a set of overstorey attributes,including species richness,proportion of evergreen species,light availability(representing crown density)and litter quality,and investigated whether they drive the understorey’s contribution to carbon and nutrient *** and conclusions:Overstorey litter production and nutrient stocks in litterfall clearly exceeded the contribution of the understorey for all forest types,and the share of the understorey was higher in forests at the extremes of the climatic *** most of the investigated forest types,it was mainly light availability that determined the contribution of the understorey to yearly carbon and nutrient *** species richness did not affect the contribution of the understorey to carbon and nutrient cycling in any of the investigated forest types.

Antifungal activity of lactic acid bacteria isolated from kunu-zaki,a cereal-based Nigerian fermented beverage

Fungal deterioration is a barrier to the wide acceptance of fermented cereal foods from *** use of protective cultures is a natural approach to controlling fungi in foods that also complies with a clean label *** study aims to select antifungal lactic acid bacteria(LAB)previously isolated from kunu-zaki to bio-control deterioration in this cereal-based Nigerian fermented *** of Leuconostoc citreum(1),Limosilactobacillus fermentum(6),and Weissella confusa(3)were the most active against seven test mold species,with average inhibition score of 2.25-2.88,after screening 220 LAB strains using agar overlay on millet-sorghum flour hydrolysate(mSFH)*** mSFH agar diffusion method revealed that antifungal activity against the seven target molds was retained in cell-free supernatants(CFSs)of selected LABs,with the strongest inhibition against *** F008BA and *** 3AS1 demonstrated by *** 5KJEU5(9.06%)and *** YKDIA1(24.55%),*** antifungal activity of CFSs was mainly due to the occurrence of acidic compounds,with the most abundant compounds being acetic(0.30-1.96 mg/mL)and lactic(1.80-3.23 mg/mL)*** compounds such as hydroxycaffeic(0.16-6.72μg/mL),3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)propionic(1.40-6.36μg/mL),3-phenyllactic(1.28-24.48μg/mL),and hydroxyferulic acids(12.25μg/mL)occurred at lower *** challenged kunu-zaki,*** 5KJEU5 prevented the growth of *** F008BA and *** 3AS1 beyond 8 day at ambient temperature(25◦C).In this study,LAB from kunu-zaki displayed strong antifungal activity,showing great potential as a protective culture to prevent fungal growth and mycotoxin accumulation in cereal foods.

We prove that any C1-stable weakly shadowable volume-preserving diffeomorphism defined on a compact manifold displays a dominated splitting E ⊕ F. moreover, both E and F are volume-hyperbolic. Finally, we prove the version of this result for divergence-free vector fields. As a consequence, in low dimensions, we obtain global hyperbolicity.

Under a first order moment condition on the immigration mechanism,we show that an appropriately scaled supercritical and irreducible multi-type continuous state and continuous time branching process with immigration(CBI process)converges almost *** an x log(x)moment condition on the branching mechanism does not hold,then the limit is *** this x log(x)moment condition holds,then we prove L1 convergence as *** projection of the limit on any left non-Perron eigenvector of the branching mean matrix is ***,in addition,a suitable extra power moment condition on the branching mechanism holds,then we provide the correct scaling for the projection of a CBI process on certain left non-Perron eigenvectors of the branching mean matrix in order to have almost sure and L1 ***,under a second order moment condition on the branching and immigration mechanisms,we prove L2 convergence of an appropriately scaled process and the above-mentioned projections as well.A representation of the limits is also provided under the same moment conditions.

Celiac disease(CD)is one of the most common food intolerances in developed *** affects genetically susceptible individuals and has severe consequences if it remains undiagnosed.A disease known for more than a century,it is still the focus for experts from various fields of research and ***,pathologists,immunologists,food engineers and dieticians share their knowledge and expertise to improve the conditions of CD *** new insights in the pathomechanism of gluten processing and antigen presentation in CD,it was possible to improve the diagnostic antigen mimicking the primary epitope in *** celiac neo-epitopes are comprised of a complex of gliadin peptides crosslinked with transglutaminase(tTg).They are an early diagnostic marker for CD which occurs up to 6 months earlier than classical markers known to miss a certain amount of CD patients.

Wild bee distribution near forested landscapes is dependent on successional state

Background:Forested landscapes are valuable sources of ecosystem services especially in areas dedicated to intense agricultural *** from forest margin is known to influence the wild bee community in the landscape surrounding forested *** little is known regarding how bee communities distribute themselves in landscapes that exhibit different forest successional ***:We examined how land use type and distance from the forest edge affect the abundance and richness of the wild bee community across four forest successional *** were collected in sites representing four stages of forest succession and analyzed using generalized linear mixed models with negative binomial ***:Wild bee diversity is reduced in forested environments that maintain dense stands of trees and high canopy ***,distance from the forest edge was an important factor determining wild bee distribution in successional stages adjacent to forest ***,we found that bees maintain high specificity for distinct successional states and ***:Our results demonstrate how different successional stages can harbor different bee species and highlight the ability of microhabitats to act as reservoirs of bee diversity in and around forest ***,we found that maximizing successional patchiness across forested landscapes increases the amount of available habitat that can support a diverse suite of bees with different nesting biologies and behaviors.

Assessment of food supplementation and surveillance as techniques to reduce damage caused by black capuchin monkeys Sapajus nigritus to forest plantations

Black capuchin monkeys Sapajus nigritus are among several mammalian species that damage forest plantations, pri- marily plantations of pine trees （Pinus spp.） in South Brazil. management practices to reduce these damages include supplemen- tary food offerings and plantation surveillance. To assess the efficiency of these techniques, four treatments were evaluated： feeding （F, with supplementary bananas and maize）, surveillance （S, in situ, wherein men patrolled the plantations, deterring the monkeys）, feeding ＋ surveillance （FS） and control （no procedures）（C）. The efficiency assessment of each treatment involved the number of recorded primate sightings in the treatments with the presence of guards （S and FS） and a damage inventory of the outskirts of the experimental points immediately before and after the experiment. These data were complemented by a simulta- neous study of the availability of fruit, the primary item in the diet of this primate species, in the remnant native forest in the study area. most sightings of S. nigritus occurred early in the morning, and in general, sightings were inversely proportional to the availability of native fruits. This trend was most evident in treatment FS, most likely due to the presence of food. Treatments F and FS exhibited higher percentages of damage, indicating that these are inefficient management techniques. Treatment S exhi- bited the lowest damage rate, but at a high cost, making this technique difficult to apply over large expanses. The development of other management techniques, such as environmental enrichment and the use of deterrents, is recommended to minimize the damage caused by capuchins in forest plantations [Current Zoology 60 （5）： 581-590, 2014].

A combined computational pipeline to detect circular RNAs in human cancer cells under hypoxic stress

Hypoxia is associated with several diseases,including *** that are deprived of adequate oxygen supply trigger tran-scriptional and post-transcriptional responses,which control cellular pathways such as angiogenesis,proliferation,and metabolic *** RNAs(circRNAs)are a novel class of mainly non-coding RNAs,which have been implicated in multiple cancers and attract increasing attention as potential ***,we characterize the circRNA signatures of three different cancer cell lines from cervical(HeLa),breast(mCF-7),and lung(A549)cancer under *** order to reliably detect circRNAs,we integrate available tools with custom approaches for quantification and statistical analysis?Using this consolidated computational pipeline,we identify?12000 circRNAs in the three cancer *** molecular characteristics point to an involvement of complementary RNA sequences as well as trans-acting factors in circRNA biogenesis,such as the RNA-binding protein HNRNPC-Notably,we detect a number of circRNAs that are more abundant than their linear *** addition,64 circRNAs significantly change in abundance upon hypoxia,in most cases in a cell type-specific *** summary,we present a comparative circRNA profiling in human cancer cell lines,which promises novel insights into the biogenesis and function of circRNAs under hypoxic stress.

Cirrhosis complicating Shwachman-Diamond syndrome: A case report

BACKGROUND The features of Shwachman-Diamond syndrome (SDS) include exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, skeletal abnormalities and bone marrow dysfunction;an often overlooked feature is hepatic involvement. CASE SUmmARY We report a child who initially presented with failure to thrive and mildly elevated transaminase levels and was determined to have pancreatic insufficiency due to SDS. During follow-up he had persistently elevated transaminase levels and developed hepatosplenomegaly. An investigation was performed to determine the etiology of ongoing liver injury, including a liver biopsy which revealed hepatic cirrhosis. CONCLUSION Cirrhosis has rarely been reported with SDS. While many of the hepatic disorders associated with SDS improve with age, there are rare exceptions with serious implications for long-term outcome.
