Design multifunctional Mg–Zr coatings regulating Mg alloy bioabsorption

Magnesium(Mg)alloys are widely used for temporary bone implants due to their favorable biodegradability,cytocompatibility,hemocompatibility,and close mechanical properties to bone.However,rapid degradation and inadequate strength limit their applicability.To overcome this,the direct current magnetron sputtering technique is employed for surface coating in Mg-based alloys using various zirconium(Zr)content.This approach presents a promising strategy for simultaneously improving corrosion resistance,maintaining biocompatibility,and enhancing strength without compromising osseointegration.By leveraging Mg’s inherent biodegradability,it has the potential to minimize the need for secondary surgeries,thereby reducing costs and resources.This paper is a systematic study aimed at understanding the corrosion mechanisms of Mg–Zr coatings,denoted Mg-xZr(x=0–5 at.%).Zr-doped coatings exhibited columnar growth leading to denser and refined structures with increasing Zr content.XRD analysis confirmed the presence of the Mg(00.2)basal plane,shifting towards higher angles(1.15°)with 5 at.%Zr doping due to lattice parameter changes(i.e.,decrease and increase of“c”and“a”lattice parameters,respectively).Mg–Zr coatings exhibited“liquidphilic”behavior,while Young’s modulus retained a steady value around 80 GPa across all samples.However,the hardness has significantly improved across all samples’coating,reaching the highest value of(2.2±0.3)GPa for 5 at.%Zr.Electrochemical testing in simulated body fluid(SBF)at 37℃ revealed a significant enhancement in corrosion resistance for Mg–Zr coatings containing 1.0–3.4 at.%Zr.Compared with the 5 at.%Zr coating which exhibited a corrosion rate of 32 mm/year,these coatings displayed lower corrosion rates,ranging from 1 to 12 mm/year.This synergistic enhancement in mechanical properties and corrosion resistance,achieved with 2.0–3.4 at.%Zr,suggests potential ability for reducing stress shielding and controlled degradation performance,and consequently,promising functional biodegradable materials f

The radial surface coating layer of compression piston rings is used to improve their wear resistance during the internal combustion engine operation.However,at top dead centers,the friction coefficient of the piston ring–cylinder liner pair is detrimental to the engine’s tribological performance.In this work,dimples with different texture dimensions and densities were tested in a home-developed tribometer.The friction coefficient was measured for all samples,and for those with the best results,their wear resistance was assessed.The texture with an aspect ratio of 0.25 and a density area of 15%reported the best tribological results.

Obesity,diabetes,cardiovascular and respiratory diseases,cancer and smoking are risk factors for negative outcomes in severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2),which can quickly induce severe respiratory failure in 5%of cases.Coronavirus disease-associated liver injury may occur during progression of SARS-CoV-2 in patients with or without pre-existing liver disease,and damage to the liver parenchyma can be caused by infection of hepatocytes.Cirrhosis patients may be particularly vulnerable to SARS-CoV-2 if suffering with cirrhosis-associated immune dysfunction.Furthermore,pharmacotherapies including macrolide or quinolone antibiotics and steroids can also induce liver damage.In this review we addressed nutritional status and nutritional interventions in severe SARS-CoV-2 liver patients.As guidelines for SARS-CoV-2 in intensive care(IC)specifically are not yet available,strategies for management of sepsis and SARS are suggested in SARS-CoV-2.Early enteral nutrition(EN)should be started soon after IC admission,preferably employing iso-osmolar polymeric formula with initial protein content at 0.8 g/kg per day progressively increasing up to 1.3 g/kg per day and enriched with fish oil at 0.1 g/kg per day to 0.2 g/kg per day.Monitoring is necessary to identify signs of intolerance,hemodynamic instability and metabolic disorders,and transition to parenteral nutrition should not be delayed when energy and protein targets cannot be met via EN.Nutrients including vitamins A,C,D,E,B6,B12,folic acid,zinc,selenium andω-3 fatty acids have in isolation or in combination shown beneficial effects upon immune function and inflammation modulation.Cautious and monitored supplementation up to upper limits may be beneficial in management strategies for SARS-CoV-2 liver patients.

Detection and determination of undeclared synthetic caffeine in weight loss formulations using HPLC-DAD and UHPLC-MS/MS

Caffeine is present in products marketed for weight loss, with the purpose of increasing thermogenesis and lipid metabolism. The dosage declared by the product manufacturer, or even its presence, is not always correctly described on the label. This work aimed to investigate the undeclared synthetic caffeine in weight loss formulations by a high-performance liquid chromatography with diode array detection(HPLC-DAD) method. From one hundred products purchased through Brazilian e-commerce, seventeen contained caffeine, either naturally or synthetically added to formulation. The caffeine-containing samples were confirmed by an ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry(UHPLC-MS/MS) method, and adulteration was clearly proven in five products. The content highest caffeine contained 448.8 mg per dose. Other irregularities were also found; nevertheless, the most serious was the addition of synthetic drugs without asking the consumers. Additional drugs expose the consumer to more possible side-effects as well as deleterious drug interactions. Intentional adulteration with any unlabeled substance is typically motivated by a desire to increase or alter the claimed effect of the marketed product to gain a commercial advantage.

The Current and Future Role of Drugs and Probiotics in the Management of Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and other auto-inflammatory disorders are conditions caused by chronic and persistent intestinal inflammation, which is mainly represented by Ulcerative Colitis (UC) or Crohn’s Disease (CD), both of which typically arise as chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal mucosa. Doctor’s main focus for treating IBD is the decrease on inflammation processes when the disease is active and promotes the maintenance of inflammation at normal levels. However, to deal with these two parameters is not easy, because the drugs usually used are related to several side effects and they are not totally effective to reduce inflammation and to keep the remission. Authors agree that the therapy approach should include drugs, dietary intervention and use of alternative substances as probiotics. The standard treatment approach for patients with CD and UC is traditionally done with the use of anti-inflammatory agents, like corticosteroids, mesalamine, immunomodulators such as azathioprine and methotrexate, and biologic agents such as infliximab and others. Probiotics are known as viable micro-organisms (or live microorganisms or live microbial dietary supplements) that may promote beneficial physiologic or therapeutic properties when used correctly. The interest in the role of these substances in improving human health is the reason of several researches. They may be used to help the immune system, to control gastro-intestinal infections and to prevent several diseases. Prebiotics, symbiotics, and probiotics may be helpful as adjuvants in the treatment of IBD. Probiotics are normally well-tolerated and are associated with few side effects which are undoubtedly important in the treatment of any disease.

Cardiovascular Risk of Community-Dwelling Elderly from a City in Northeastern Brazil: Correlations with Vitamin D and Parathormone

We investigated the cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk of the elderly in a city in northeastern Brazil, and the correlation of this risk with vitamin D and PTH status. We studied 359 elderly, both genders, from Piauí-Teresina-Brazil. Variables investigated: body mass index, waist circumference, systolic and diastolic blood pressure. A subsample (n = 100) was investigated for biochemical analyses: PTH and 25(OH)-vitamin D levels;total, HDL and LDL-cholesterol;and fasting glucose. High blood pressure, abdominal obesity, sedentarism, high total cholesterol, high triacylglycerol levels, as well as low vitamin D levels, were, among the investigated variables, the most prevalent. Visceral adiposity and low vitamin D were found to be more prevalent in women than in men, whilst alcohol intake and smoking were more prevalent in men. The correlation between vitamin D, PTH and the investigated risk variables, under our study conditions, were not significant.

Environmental Exposure Associated with Oxidative Stress Biomarkers in Children and Adolescents Residents in Brazilian Western Amazon

Oxidative stress is a biological process that occurs in response to an imbalance between prooxidant and antioxidant substances and has been described in the pathophysiology of more than 200 clinical disorders. In this study, we evaluate the relationship between genetic, demographic, social, environmental, and health factors and redox imbalance biomarkers in a group of children and adolescents environmentally exposed to atmospheric pollutants and mercury in the Brazilian Western Amazon. This is a cross-sectional study of the relationship between demographic, genetic, and socioenvironmental factors and serum concentrations of redox imbalance biomarkers (thiol groups, malondialdehyde, and glutathione S-transferase [GST]) in children and adolescents living in the municipality of Porto Velho, Rond?nia. The investigated factors were hierarchically organized into groups of variables and their relationship with redox imbalance biomarkers was estimated by a multiple linear regression model. Children and adolescents with asthma, with C-reactive protein values, with the polymorphic variant GSTP1, and exposed to indoor air pollution presented lower thiol serum concentrations when compared to those categorized in their respective reference groups. GST activity and malondialdehyde serum concentrations were positively related to weekly fish consumption and exposure to PM2.5. This study showed that enzymatic GST activity and malondialdehyde serum concentrations are positively associated with environmental factors, especially air pollution (β = 8.64 U/L for GST and β = 0.244 μmol/L for MDA in high exposure group;p-value < 0.01);while serum thiol concentrations presented an inversely proportional relationship with markers of general health status, such asthma (median: 0.45 mmol/L vs. 0.48 mmol/L;p-value < 0.05), acute inflammation (β = -0.25 mmol/L;p-value < 0.01), and positively with genetic factor (β = 0.12 mmol/L for Val/Val;p-value < 0.05).

The Giant Radio Array for Neutrino Detection(GRAND)is a planned large-scale observatory of ultra-high-energy(UHE)cosmic particles,with energies exceeding 10~8 Ge V.Its goal is to solve the long-standing mystery of the origin of UHE cosmic rays.To do this,GRAND will detect an unprecedented number of UHE cosmic rays and search for the undiscovered UHE neutrinos and gamma rays associated to them with unmatched sensitivity.GRAND will use large arrays of antennas to detect the radio emission coming from extensive air showers initiated by UHE particles in the atmosphere.Its design is modular:20 separate,independent sub-arrays,each of 10000 radio antennas deployed over 10000 km^2.A staged construction plan will validate key detection techniques while achieving important science goals early.Here we present the science goals,detection strategy,preliminary design,performance goals,and construction plans for GRAND.
