Evaluation of Left Ventricular Function after Percutaneous Recanalization of Chronic Coronary Occlusions: The Role of Two-Dimensional Speckle Tracking Echocardiography

Background: The recanalization of a chronic total coronary occlusion is the possible way to improve left ventricular (LV) function through the recovery of hibernating myocardium. Aim: The aim of this study is to evaluate the role of 2D speckle tracking in evaluation of the left ventricular (LV) systolic function in chronic total occlusion (CTO) patients before and at 1 day as well as 3 months after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Patients and Methods: A prospective observational study included 40 patients diagnosed with coronary angiography to have a chronic total occlusion. Percutaneous coronary revascularization was performed according to standard practices with the femoral approach. Conventional 2D echocardiography was used to assess LV functions and wall motion abnormalities scoring index (WMAI). Using speckle-tracking echocardiography was to measure global longitudinal strain (GLS) and. Follow-up of patients was done at day 1 and 3 months later after PCI. Results: Forty patients were included in this study, with a mean age of 58.55 ± 7.98 years. GLS and WMAI difference at baseline and follow-up shows a positive correlation with left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) changes at baseline and follow-up (p Conclusion: The results of this study provide evidence to support the clinical use of 2D-STE to monitor the early changes of LV function. In patients undergoing CTO revascularization, change in GLS was more sensitive predictors for LV function improvement at 3-month follow-up.

Effect of Annealing Temperature on Prepared Nanoparticles Li-Ferrite Using Positron Annihilation Lifetime Technique

Lithium ferrite nanoparticles were synthesized by a sol-gel auto-combustion method. For prepared samples, the nanograins were increased with increasing the annealing temperature. Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) was used to study defects at different sites for nanograins Li-ferrites. The analysis of the PAL spectrum indicated two lifetime components τ1 and τ2 for the annihilation of the positrons, and their corresponding relative intensities I1% and I2%. For nanoparticles Li-ferrite there are correlations between: 1) I2, τ2, annealing temperature and the total porosity (Pt) with the grain size;2) I1, μi, Ms and the homogeneity with grain size.

Relation between Epicardial Adipose Tissue Thickness Assessed by Multidetector Computed Tomography and Significance of Coronary Artery Disease

Objective: To evaluate the relation between epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) thickness and also pericoronary fat assessed by Multidetector Computed Tomography (MDCT) with both calcium score and significance of coronary artery disease. Background: Epicardial adipose tissue (the visceral fat of the heart present under the visceral layer of the pericardium) has the same origin of abdominal visceral fat, which is known to be strongly related to the development of coronary artery atherosclerosis. Multidetector CT (MDCT) provides an accurate and reproducible quantification of EAT due to its high spatial and temporal resolution. Patients and Methods: The current study included 70 patients with low-intermediate probability of coronary artery disease. All patients were subjected to 256 Multidetectors CT to assess EAT thickness, the mean thickness of the pericoronary fat surrounding the three coronary arteries and coronary calcium score. Also coronary CT angiography was done and patients were then divided into 3 groups according to significance of coronary atherosclerosis: Group 1: No atherosclerosis (20 patients), Group 2: Non obstructive atherosclerosis (luminal narrowing less than 50% in diameter) (25 patients), Group3: Obstructive atherosclerosis (luminal narrowing ≥ 50%) (25 patients). Results: The mean EAT thickness and the mean pericoronary fat thickness were significantly higher in patients with obstructive coronary artery disease (CAD) with stenosis > 50% (group 3) compared to other groups with normal coronaries or non obstructive (CAD). ROC curve was used to define the best cut off value of the thickness of both EAT and pericoronary fat in predicting the obstructive CAD group which was ≥7.2 and 12.6 mm for epicardial and pericoronary fat respectively. Also there is a positive correlation between both epicardial adipose tissue and pericoronary fat thickness and the coronary calcium score. Application of Different Frequency Domain Detectors in Radar Moving Target Detection

Moving target detection （MTD） technique is designed to filtering out the clutters. The basis of the MTD digital signal processor is a bank of Doppler filters designed using FFT algorithm. For high pulse repetition frequency （HPRF）, it leads to a long time calculations and great complexity in hardware implementation. Frequency domain detector is represented by Welch method Realized Doppler filters bank which will reduce the time calculation. The proposed method enhances the target detection capabilities by providing higher detection probabilities or lower false alarm rates. The performance of the two systems, the traditional MTD-I and Welch method are compared from the viewpoint of probability of detection （Pd）, probability of false alarm （Pfa）. Computer simulation results are presented to support the superiority of the proposed technique.

Chemotherapy Toxicity Profile in Adjuvant Treated Colorectal Carcinoma Patients

Background:?Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer and the fourth leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the world. The treatment of stage III CRC consists of surgery followed by adjuvant chemotherapy with either single agent capecitabine or combination therapy consisting of FOLFOX?or XelOX, all of which have been shown to be effective in improving disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS). However, toxicities acquired from chemotherapy can affect a cancer patient’s quality of life and result in early?treatment discontinuation. Common toxicities include hematological, gastrointestinal (GI), constitutional, dermatological, and neurological.?Aim of the Work: The present work was aimed to assess and evaluate chemotherapy toxicities in adjuvant treatment in CRC patients and analyze certain factors that might increase chemotherapy toxicity. Patients and Methods: This is retrospective study included a total of 72 patients of colorectal carcinoma received adjuvant chemotherapy at Clinical Oncology Department, Ain Shams University. The study was conducted between Jan. 2012 and Jan. 2017. Results: We found that?the most chemotherapy reported was neurological toxicity in (73.6%), gastrointestinal symptoms (diarrhea 52.7%, nausea 30.6%, vomiting 27.8% & oral mucositis 24%), hematological toxicity (neutropenia 40.3%, anemia 34.7%, thrombocytopenia 12.5%), fatigue 20.9%, hepatic toxicity 18.1%, dermatological toxicity 9.7% & renal toxicity 5.6%). older patients have significant incidence of neurological toxicity (p-value?= 0.023) and fatigue (p-value?= 0.038). females have significant incidence of anemia (p-value = 0.017). increase of oxaliplatin?cumulative dose increase incidence of neurological toxicity (p-value?= 0.024), thrombocytopenia (p-value?= 0.007) and renal toxicity (p-value?= 0.030). Galectin 3 Level in Patients with Acute Coronary Syndrome and its Relation to Severity of Coronary Artery Disease

Background: Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) is a very common cause of hospitalizations worldwide each year. Despite Troponin is considered the gold standard in diagnosis of ACS. Several molecules have been investigated to identify predictive biomarkers of diagnosis. Among these, Galectin-3 has emerged as a promising diagnostic biomarker of (ACS). We aimed to evaluate galectin-3 levels in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and its relation to severity of coronary artery disease. Methods: Seventy two patients with ACS who underwent primarypercutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and 20 age-matched healthy controls were enrolled in our study .The severity of coronary artery disease and the burden of atherosclerosis was assessed with Gensini score and with the number of affected vessels. Galectin-3 levels were measured on admission by using ELISA with a commercially kit. Result: The mean age of the observational case control study was 55.9 ± 11.9 and 68 patients (73.9%) of the study were male. Median galectin-3 levels were significantly higher in ACS patients (20.25 ng/mL [11.9 - 39.0] vs. 8.9 ng/mL [4.6 - 24.0], P = 0.001). A Fast Statistical Approach for Human Activity Recognition

An essential part of any activity recognition system claiming be truly real-time is the ability to perform feature extraction in real-time. We present, in this paper, a quite simple and computationally tractable approach for real-time human activity recognition that is based on simple statistical features. These features are simple and relatively small, accordingly they are easy and fast to be calculated, and further form a relatively low-dimensional feature space in which classification can be carried out robustly. On the Weizmann publicly benchmark dataset, promising results (i.e. 97.8%) have been achieved, showing the effectiveness of the proposed approach compared to the-state-of-the-art. Furthermore, the approach is quite fast and thus can provide timing guarantees to real-time applications.

Face Detection and Localization in Color Images: An Efficient Neural Approach

Automatic face detection and localization is a key problem in many computer vision tasks. In this paper, a simple yet effective approach for detecting and locating human faces in color images is proposed. The contribution of this paper is twofold. First, a particular reference to face detection techniques along with a background to neural networks is given. Second, and maybe most importantly, an adaptive cubic-spline neural network is designed to be used to detect and locate human faces in uncontrolled environments. The experimental results conducted on our test set show the effectiveness of the proposed approach and it can compare favorably with other state-of-the-art approaches in the literature.

＜正＞ In this paper, we discuss and investigate a new method to estimate local emission probabilities in the framework of hidden Markov models （HMM）. Each feature vector is considered to be a sequence and is supposed to be modeled by yet another HMM. Therefore, we call this approach ’HMM2’. There is a variety of possible topologies of such HMM2 systems, e.g. incorporating trellis or ergodic HMM structures. Preliminary HMM2 speech recognition experiments on cepstral and spectral features y.elded worse results than state-of the-art systems. However, we believe that HMM2 systems have a lot of potential advantages and are therefore worth investigating further.

We present density functional theory DFT ab initio calculation of the electronic and magnetic properties of ThCo4B compound using the self-consistent full-potential linearized augmented plane wave (FPLAPW) method as implemented in the Wien2k package. The influence of the local environment on the Co magnetic moments is discussed by comparing the magnetic and electronic properties of ThCo4B to its parent ThCo5 compound. The total magnetic moment in these two compounds is dominated by the Co moment. The Spin orbit interaction affects the electronic structure and spin-density maps of the p-state of Th.
