Soil erosion in the Hare watershed led to significant land degradation,water pollution,and reduced agricultural *** its effects,very few researchers have used combined morphometric and RUSLE model techniques to quantify soil erosion and thereby prioritize impacted *** work used an automated GIS-based tool(SWPT)to prioritize crucial areas based on topohydrological and morphometric factors and predict soil loss in sub-watersheds using the RUSLE *** use/cover data were obtained from Landsat imagery,while slope and morphometric information were extracted from digital elevation data with a resolution of 12.5 *** erodibility was determined using Ethiopian soil maps,and rainfall erosivity was computed using meteorological *** average annual soil loss of 49 t ha-1 yr-1 was observed in the Hare ***-watershed 11 was found to be the most affected,with an average annual soil loss of 85.12 t ha-1 yr-1and a compound parameter value(CPV)of *** 17 has the least amount of soil loss,with 3.67t ha-1 yr-1 and a CPV of *** study emphasizes the usefulness of integrating RUSLE and morphometric analysis for soil and water conservation planning,suggesting a variety of modeling tools in data-sparse locations to quantify and prioritize erosion-prone areas.

Exhumation and Preservation of the Yangchuling Porphyry W-mo deposit in the Jiangnan Tungsten Ore Belt, South China: Insights from (U-Th)/He and Fission Track dating

The Yangchuling porphyry W-mo deposit(YPWd), located in the Jiangnan porphyryskarn tungsten ore belt, is one of the most important and large-scale porphyry W-mo deposits in South China. While previous zircon U-Pb and molybdenite Re-Os data suggest that Yangchuling Wmo ore bodies formed almost simultaneously with granodiorite and monzogranitic porphyry at ～150–144 ma, their post emplacement history remains poorly understood, making their preservation status at depth uncertain. In this paper, new zircon and apatite(U-Th)/He and apatite fission track(ZHe, AHe and AFT, respectively) data of one hornfels and five intrusive rocks from a 1 000-meter borehole are presented. These, together with new inverse thermal history models and previous geochronological data, help elucidate the post-diagenetic exhumation history and preservation status of the Yangchuling porphyry W-mo deposit. In general, ZHe and AHe ages decrease gradually from the near surface downwards and have relatively little intra-sample variation, ranging from 133 to 73ma and 67 to 25 ma, respectively. All four granodiorites yield similar AFT ages that range from 63 to 55 ma with mean track lengths varying from 12.2 ± 0.7 to 12.6 ± 0.5 μm. Thermal history modelling indicates that the Yangchuling ore district experienced slow, monotonic cooling since the Cretaceous. Age-depth relationships are interpreted as recording ～3.7 ± 0.8 km of Cretaceous-recent exhumation in response to regional extension throughout South China thought to have been driven by subduction retreat of the Paleo-Pacific Plate. Comparison of estimated net exhumation and previous metallogenic depth of ～4–5 km suggests that W-mo ore bodies could still exist at depths of up to ～1.3 ± 0.8 km relative to Earth surface in the YPWd region. Preservation of the YPWd is attributed to the limited amount of regional denudation during the Late Cretaceous and Cenozoic.

Preparation and Characterization of Clay Soils for Applications in Cyanide Removal from mining Wastewater

In Burkina Faso, water resources in mining areas are polluted by cyanide, which is released into the environment through mining activities. To mitigate this pollution, two clays named Koro and Kaya were collected in Burkina Faso and characterized using analytical technics. This work aimed to find out a cheap technology based on local soils for water treatment. The objective of the work was to prepare and characterize two local clays for application in mining effluent treatment. Specific surface area and pore dimensions were analyzed using Brunauer, Emmett and Teller method. In addition, anion exchange capacities, chemical composition through X-ray fluorescence and chemical functions by Fourier-transformed Infrared spectroscopy were determined. mineralogical composition, thermal behavior, microstructure, and surface elemental composition of clays were examined using techniques of X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive spectroscopy. Results showed that the surface areas of two anionic clays were 64 m2/g and 50 m2/g for Koro and Kaya, respectively. An anion exchange capacity of 126.68 cmol/kg for Koro and 125.13 cmol/kg at pH 11 was found. Chemical and mineralogical analysis showed that the clays were rich in minerals, mainly of illite (24 - 27)%, montmorillonite (23 - 24)% and kaolinite (17 - 26)%, orthosis (9 - 13)%, quartz (5 - 12)%, goethite (3 - 6)% and anorthite (2 - 6)%. Application of clays for the treatment of cyanide solution led to a decrease in intensities of chemical functions and a modification of the surface morphology. Consequently, those clay soils can be used as adsorbents in cyanide removal through column and batch experiments.

The Prevalence, Patterns, and Trend of Antimicrobial Resistance among Patients at Kumi Orthopaedic Center: A Retrospective Study

Background: Antimicrobial Resistance (AmR) has been recognized as a global public health problem of utmost importance that needs to be tackled. Low-income countries such as Uganda have the greatest burden of severe and life-threatening infections and are most likely to suffer more from the spread of untreatable resistant bacteria. despite the generally increasing trends in AmR, there is hardly any documented data on AmR in orthopedic care. methods: We analyzed data from the pathogenic isolates from pus and tissue from the laboratory from 2019 to 2023. We calculated the proportions of isolates resistant to commonly used antimicrobial classes. We used the chi-square test for trends to evaluate changes in AmR across the study period. Results: Out of the 286 isolates, 104 (43.5%) were from pus, 112 (46.9%) were from tissue samples and the remaining 9.6% were from different fluid aspirates like synovial fluid. most of the isolates were from males (64.2%) and aged between 19 and 45 years (46.2%). The distribution of whether the bacteria were gram-positive or negative was relatively equal with 114 (45.2%) being gram-negative and 120 (47.6%) gram-positive. Generally, there was increased AmR across all antibiotics from 2019 to 2021 e.g. for Imipinem, it went from 0% in 2019 to 70.8% in 2021 and for Amoxyclav, it went from 10% in 2019 to 93.2% in 2021. There was a general decline in AmR noted from 2021 to 2023. However, currently, the highest resistance is noted in ceftriaxone (80.0%) and the lowest in Imipinem (11.76%). Conclusion: There is a general decreasing trend in AmR, most probably due to increasing policies governing the use of antibiotics. However, there is still high resistance to commonly used and affordable antibiotics. Continuous monitoring of AmR is still recommended to reduce the AmR problem in Uganda at large through public health policy and planning.
