Basic scho.ls that are lo.ated in heavily po.ulated residential and co.mercial areas in Ghana are expo.ed to.enviro.mental no.se that can have detrimental effects o. the academic attainments o. children. Limited studies have been co.ducted o. no.se level in basic scho.ls to.date in Ghana. The o.jective o. the study was to.assess no.se levels in and aro.nd learning spaces in basic scho.ls in Ghana with a focus on Kumasi. A survey employing the use of interviews and an empirical monitoring of noise levels in and around learning spaces in four selected basic schools were adopted. The study revealed that mean outdoor and indoor noise levels exceed the World Health Organisation permissible limits by 30 - 40 percent and 90 - 107 percent respectively for schools in the commercial zones and schools that are located near highways. The school that is sited in an educational environment with a setback from the highway attained mean noise levels ranging from 1.2 percent below to 3.7 percent above the permissible limits for outdoor and between 64 - 105 percent for indoor. The outcome of the study is expected to engender the design of environmental noise resilient buildings to facilitate teaching and learning in basic schools in Ghanao.t-family:Verdana;">o.t-family:Verdana;">o.t-family:Verdana;">.

Self-build ho.sing pro.ects (SBHPs) amo.g middle and high inco.e develo.ers are faced with many challenges that cause delay in the delivery time o. the ho.se(s). The fo.us o. this paper is to.analyse the facto.s that cause delay in SBHPs in o.der to.identify the critical delay facto.s. Review o. literature and expert input revealed 20 variables which were used in a structured questio.naire fo. data co.lectio. fro. o.ners, co.sultants and builders in Wa Municipality. Reliability test, t-test analysis and mean ranking were used in the data analysis. The results revealed that “Delay in o.taining permit fro. Lo.al Autho.ities” was the first delay facto. fo.lo.ed by “Po.r site management and supervisio.”. The delay facto. ranked least was “Inadequate co.t estimatio. and related details” fro. co.sultants. The paper reco.mends that Go.ernment agencies that regulate physical develo.ment sho.ld intensify public educatio., particularly o. respo.sibilities and o.ligatio.s, especially amo.g self-builders. The paper reco.mends further study into.labo.r-related issues as well as co.municatio. and info.matio. management amo.g participants and its impact o. self-build pro.ect success.
