Supersonically sprayed self-aligne d rGO nanosheets and ZnO/ZnMn_(2)O_(4)nanowires for high-energy and high-power-density supercapacitors

Core-shell-type bimetallic oxide and carbon composites comprising zinc oxide(ZnO)nanospheres and zinc manganese oxide(ZnMn_(2)O_(4))nanowires were produced by a hydrothermal method,and supersoni-cally sprayed together with reduced graphene oxide(rGO)nanosheets onto Ni foil to fabricate flexible *** supersonic impact facilitated the exfoliation of the rGO nanosheets,thereby increasing the surface area and adhesion of the composite particles to the *** rGO nanosheets were vertically aligned during the supersonic impact and formed localized zones,enabling optimal accommodation of the ZnO/ZnMn_(2)O_(4)*** localization,with the addition of rGO,reduced the agglomeration of ZnO/ZnMn_(2)O_(4)*** molar concentration of MnSO_(4)used in the synthesis of ZnO/ZnMn_(2)O_(4)was varied from 0.05 to 0.15 mol/L to determine the optimal MnSO_(4)concentration that would result in the highest energy storage *** unique nanostructure of ZnO/ZnMn_(2)O_(4)and the self-alignment of rGO sheets facilitated a favorable environment for high energy storage capability with a specific capaci-tance of 276.3 mF·cm^(−2)at a current density of 0.5 mA·cm^(−2)and an energy density of 98.2μWh·cm^(−2)at a power density of 1600μW·cm^(−2).The width of the potential window was increased to 1.2 V,imply-ing a significant increase in the energy storage capability of the *** retention of 88%was achieved after 10,000 charge/discharge cycles for the supercapacitor fabricated using an optimal MnSO_(4)concentration(0.10 mol/L)during the composite synthesis.

Understanding Infrastructure Resiliency in Chennai, India Using Twitter＇s Geotags and Texts： A Preliminary Study

Geotagging is the process of labeling data and information with geographical identification metadata, and text mining refers to the process of deriving information from text through data analytics. Geotagging and text mining are used to mine rich sources of social media data, such as video, website, text, and Quick Response （QR） code. They have been frequently used to model consumer behaviors and market trends. This study uses both techniques to understand the resilience of infrastructure in Chennai, India using data mined from the 2015 flood. This paper presents a conceptual study on the potential use of social media （Twitter in this case） to better understand infrastructure resiliency. Using feature- extraction techniques, the research team extracted Twitter data from tweets generated by the Chennai population during the flood. First, this study shows that these techniques are useful in identifying locations, defects, and failure intensities of infrastructure using the location metadata from geotags, words containing the locations, and the frequencies of tweets from each location. However, more efforts are needed to better utilize the texts generated from the tweets, including a better understanding of the cultural contexts of the words used in the tweets, the contexts of the words used to describe the incidents, and the least frequently used words.

Advances in immuno-oncology biomarkers for gastroesophageal cancer:programmed death ligand 1,microsatellite instability,and beyond

Blockade of the programmed death ligand 1(PD-L1) and programmed cell death 1(PD-1) receptor axis represents an effective form of cancer immunotherapy. Preclinical evidence initially suggested that gastric and gastroesophageal junction(GEJ) cancers are potentially immunotherapy-sensitive tumors. Early phase clinical trials have demonstrated promising antitumor activity with PD-1/PD-L1 blockade in advanced or metastatic gastric/GEJ cancer. Microsatellite instability(MSI) and PD-L1 expression have been shown to predict higher response to PD-1 inhibitors as highlighted by the recent approvals of pembrolizumab in treatmentrefractory solid tumors with MSI status and the thirdline or greater treatment of PD-L1 positive advanced gastric/GEJ cancers. However, predictive and prognostic biomarkers remain an ongoing need. In this review, we detail the preclinical evidence and early tissue biomarker analyses illustrating potential predictive biomarkers to PD-1/PD-L1 blockade in gastric/GEJ cancer. We also review the clinical development of PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors in gastric/GEJ cancer and highlight several areas in need of future investigation in order to optimize the efficacy of PD-1/PD-L1 blockade in gastric/GEJ cancer.

End-Member Selection in Two-Component Isotope-Based Hydrograph Separation

The science that underpins our knowledge and understanding of Isotope-Based Hydrograph separation (IHS) has gained grounds, over the last few decades, in the identification of streamflow sources. However, challenges still exist in identifying appropriate tracers and the right combination of end-members for the IHS process. In a two-component IHS analysis, the application of the dual isotopes tracers, δ18O and (or) δ2H, is regarded as the simplest method. We undertook an IHS study within a nested system of eight Prairie watersheds located in South central Manitoba, Canada. The work evaluated about 17,000 results emanating from the application of a combination of two potential tracers (δ18O and δ2H) and eight each of potential “old” and “new” water end-members in a two-component IHS process. The outcome showed occurrences of many mathematically possible but hydrologically unacceptable IHS results. The observation was particularly predominant within relatively larger perennial sub-catchments of the watershed. It is also shown that inter-site sub-catchment isotopic end-member transferability is possible within watersheds of similar physio-hydrographic characteristics. We suggest that a careful evaluation of the physio-hydrographic characteristics of catchments be considered in IHS studies in addition to the recommended guidelines in the selection of tracers and end-members.

Improving Strawberry Irrigation with Micro-Sprinklers and Their Impact on Pest Management

Overhead aluminum sprinklers, which are used during the early stages of strawberry crop development to establish transplants and to leach out salts from the root zone, deliver significant volumes of water. Micro-sprinklers, which are typically used in orchard crops, were evaluated in a commercial strawberry field in California as an alternative to conventional aluminum sprinklers to conserve water without any negative impact on yields. In addition to the water consumption, data were collected from multiple plots within each treatment to determine the impact on plant growth, disease incidence, and seasonal yield. Micro-sprinklers used 32% less water than aluminum sprinklers during a three-week period without affecting fruit yield. They also appeared to lessen the severity of powdery mildew and botrytis fruit rot. This is the first study reporting the use of micro-sprinkler system, which can be a good alternative to the aluminum sprinklers to conserve irrigation water.

Wearable sensors and supercapacitors using electroplated-Ni/ZnO antibacterial fabric

Herein,nickel nanocones and zinc oxide nanosheets were electroplated onto a fabric to produce multifunctional(wearable,stretchable,washable,hydrophobic,and antibacterial)materials with sensing,heating,and supercapacitive *** these functionalities are integrated into a one-layered fabric that can be used as a portable intelligent electronic textile for potential application in healthcare monitoring,smart sportswear,and energy *** nickel enhances the electrical conductivity and thus increases the electron charge transfer for supercapacitor *** integration of ZnO with the Ni-plated fabric provides pseudocapacitance via redox reactions with the *** resistance of the Ni/ZnO fabric changes in response to external stimuli such as temperature and *** voltage is applied,the fabric generates heat through Joule heating,demonstrating its potential application as winter *** superior mechanical durability of the fabric was confirmed through bending and stretching *** hydrophobic surface prevents viruses contained in liquid droplets from infiltrating the *** addition,bacterial growth is inhibited because of the antibacterial properties of the Ni/ZnO fabric and because of Joule *** one-layered fabric integrated with such multiple functionalities is expected to be applicable in the development of next-generation portable and wearable electronic textiles in various industries.

Retinoblastoma and treatment: A current evaluation of advanced therapy

Retinoblastoma is the most common primary childhood ocular tumor, affecting nearly 3.5 per million children worldwide. A mutation in the RB1 gene, which presents as either germline or sporadic, along with additional mutational events, promote neoplastic growth in the retina. Fortunately, current treatment protocols result in success rates approaching 99% at specialized centers, with many children maintaining useful vision. Overall, treatment is guided by aggressiveness and size, and is classified by systems such as the ReeseEllsworth System and the International Classification of Retinoblastoma. Due to advances in chemotherapy protocols combined with use of focal laser consolidation, treatment paradigms have shifted from enucleation to external beam radiation therapy to chemotherapy as globe-salvaging therapies. Smaller, less complex tumors may be controlled by plaque radiotherapy or focal laser ablative therapy. However, larger and more complex tumors, such as those that have vitreous or subretinal seeding, require methods of chemoreduction combined with focal consolidation to yield better outcomes. Standard chemotherapy protocols utilize vincristine, etoposide, and carboplatin with or withoutcyclophosphamide. Finally, there has been a recent push in local treatments for retinoblastoma to minimize systemic toxicities. These modalities include intravitreal or subconjunctival injections and more recently, direct chemotherapy administration into the ophthalmic artery. As a result, enucleation is used less often, but remains an important treatment for the most aggressive, refractory cases. The advancement of retinoblastoma treatment looks promising; however, worldwide access to these treatments and the lack of long-term followup of new local treatment modalities constitute current and future challenges.

Cobalt doped ZrO2 decorated multiwalled carbon nanotube:A promising nanocatalyst for photodegradation of indigo carmine and eosin Y dyes

This paper reports the degradation of indigo carmine and eosin Y dyes in water, catalyzed by cobalt and multiwalled carbon nanotube modified zirconium oxide nanocomposite（Co-ZrO2-MWCNTs） under simulated visible light. The bare ZrO2,ZrO2-MWCNTs, Co-ZrO2and Co-ZrO2-MWCNTs with different percentage compositions of cobalt were synthesized by homogeneous co-precipitation method. Characterization of the prepared nanocomposites was carried out using X-Ray powder Diffraction（XRD）, Fourier Transformer Infrared（FTIR） Spectroscopy, Transmission Electron Microscopy（TEM）, Raman Spectroscopy,（UV–Vis）-Spectroscopy and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy（EDS） for their structure, formation,morphology, size and elemental analysis. The experimental results indicated that all the cobalt and MWCNTs modified nanocomposites demonstrated higher photocatalytic activities compared to the bare ZrO2. The most efficient catalyst（0.5% Co-ZrO2-MWCNTs） with the band gap and ka values of 5.21 e V and 16.86*10-3min-1respectively exhibited 98% degradation efficiency toward indigo carmine and 87% toward eosin Y in 180 min.

Soil Hydraulic Properties： Influence of Tillage and Cover Crops

Understanding the effects of cover crops and tillage on soil physical properties is important for determining soil productivity. This study was conducted at Lincoln University＇s Freeman Center, USA to evaluate the effects of tillage and cover crop management on soil hydraulic properties. The field site included three replicate blocks in a randomized complete block design with each plot measuring 21.3 m in length and 12.2 m in width. Treatment factors were tillage at two levels （moldboard plow tillage vs. no tillage） and cover crop at two levels （cereal rye （Secale cereal） cover crop vs. no cover crop）. Soil samples were collected in late spring/early summer from each treatment at 10-cm depth increments from the soil surface to a depth of 40 cm using cores （76.2-mm diameter and 76.2-mm length）. Soil bulk density was 13% lower with tillage compared with no-tillage. Volumetric water content was significantly higher at 0.0 and -0.4 kPa pressures with tillage compared with no tillage. Tillage increased the proportion of coarse mesopores by 32gc compared with no tillage, resulting in 87% higher saturated hydraulic conductivity （ksat）. Cover crop increased the proportion of macropores by 24~ compared with no cover crop; this can potentially increase water infiltration and reduce runoff. As a result of higher macroporosity, ksat was higher under cover crop compared with no cover crop. This study demonstrated that tillage can benefit soil hydraulic properties in the short term, but these effects may not persist over time. Cover crops may slightly improve soil hydraulic properties, but longer term studies are needed to evaluate the long-term effects.
