Evolutive Trend of Water Level in the Ebrie Lagoon by Reconstitution of the Tide Gauge Time Series in Front of the Abidjan Coastline (Côte d’Ivoire)

The latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report shows that sea-level rise, which has been accelerated since the 19th century resulting to the global warming, threatens coastal areas with high population growth. A Global Sea Level observing System (GLoSS) assessment highlighted the lack of data in Africa, and in Côte d’Ivoire in particular. In order to estimate the evolutionary trend of sea level along the Ivorian coast, and to draw up preventive plans to protect properties and populations, we digitized 65 years of historical tidegrams recorded in the Ebrie Lagoon, using the “Surfer” and “Nunieau” software, then processed them using “T-Tide” and “U-Tide” software. The average levels were calculated using the Demerliac filter from complete daily (day and night) recordings for providing a usable database of 31 years of hourly lagoon data from 1979 to 2015. our results show that a mean water level in lagoon is 1.04 m. The evolutionary trend in sea level, estimated in the lagoon via the Vridi canal, during the rainy season is the most significant at 2.93 mm/year. This is followed by the dry season, with a trend of 2.89 mm/year. The flood season trend is 2.78 mm/year. This suggests that marine water inflows dominate continental inflows. our results highlight the vulnerability of Côte d’Ivoire’s coasts to the risk of marine submersion.

Mapping of the Sedimentary Facies of the Bottom of the ouladine Lagoon in Grand-Bassam (Ivory Coast_West Africa)

The ouladine lagoon has an irregular bottom lined with different substrates. The lithological characteristics make it possible to observe sediments ranging from silts to sands and mixed sediments of variable color. These different fractions have varying proportions. The coarse fraction (>63 μm) has percentages ranging from 0 to 77% and the fine fraction ( μm) from 22.46 to 100% in the different sediments collected. The minority fraction of fine sands occupies the northern banks where the greatest depths of the section parallel to the coastal strip are observed. on the other hand, the sandy fractions occupy the southern shore up to the vicinity of the Azuretti mangrove island. This sandy fraction is also present on almost the entire section from the Comoé-Ebrié lagoon confluence to the closed mouth. The grain size characters of the sediments, such as the diagram of the classification coefficient So and the mean Mz, show well-classified sands. These sediments are deposited in a slightly agitated environment coming mainly from dunes and rivers. The sands of the estuarine complex were emplaced by saltation for most samples and by rotation.

Evidence of the Albo-Cenomanian Unconformity Using Chemical Elements Case Study of Sediments from the Eastern Abidjan Margin

Sedimentological and chemostratigraphical studies using accessory elements on 322 samples of cuttings from oil wells located in the submerged sedimentary basin (offshore) of Côte d’Ivoire. This basin covered the chronostratigraphic interval from the Upper Albian to the top of the Maastrichtian. The aim of this study was to determine the major accident, the Albo-Cenomanian unconformity, using chemical elements. To achieve this goal, we had to count the accessory elements glauconite, pyrite and carbonaceous debris, and identify all the chemical elements present in each cuttings sample. The results clearly indicate that: the sediments are essentially composed of carbonaceous debris and pyrite, with a high potassium content for sediments dating from the Abian period;and glauconite, carbonaceous debris, pyrite, and a sharp decrease in potassium content for sediments dating from the Cenomanian to the Maastrichtian period. Threshold values for ratios of source-indicating chemical elements (Zr, Ti, y, Th) and paleoenvironmental elements (K, Rb, Mg, Al,) highlighted the MS1 and MS2 mega-sequences in the study area. The difference observed in the threshold values of these ratios can be explained by changes in sedimentary dynamics. The depositional environment varies from an inner continental shelf with strong littoral influence (Upper Albian) to an increasing subsidence outer continental shelf (Cenomanian-K/Pg boundary).
