During chronic kidney disease (CKD),alterations in bone and mineral metabolism include increased production of the hormone fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) that may contribute to cardiovascular *** osteocyte protein dentin matrix protein 1 (DMP1) reduces FGF23 and enhances bone mineralization,but its effects in CKD are *** tested the hypothesis that DMP1 supplementation in CKD would improve bone health,prevent FGF23 elevations and minimize consequent adverse cardiovascular *** investigated DMP1 regulation and effects in wild-type (WT) mice and the Col4a3^-/- mouse model of ***4a3^-/- mice demonstrated impaired kidney function,reduced bone DMP1 expression,reduced bone mass,altered osteocyte morphology and connectivity,increased osteocyte apoptosis,increased serum FGF23,hyperphosphatemia,left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH),and reduced *** or pharmacological supplementation of DMP1 in Col4a3^-/- mice prevented osteocyte apoptosis,preserved osteocyte networks,corrected bone mass,partially lowered FGF23 levels by attenuating NFAT-induced FGF23 transcription,and further increased serum *** impaired kidney function and worsened hyperphosphatemia,DMP1 prevented development of LVH and improved Col4a3^-/- *** data suggest that CKD reduces DMP1 expression,whereas its restoration represents a potential therapeutic approach to lower FGF23 and improve bone and cardiac health in CKD.

Artificial light at night(ALAN) pollution alters bat lunar chronobiology:insights from broad-scale long-term acoustic monitoring

Background The timing of behavior and habitat use of nocturnal animals can be influenced by the lunar cycle in nature. The prevalence of artificial light at night(ALAN) has been recognized as a source of environmental pol-lution. The interaction between ALAN and the lunar cycle on bat behavior is important for understanding anthro-pogenic effects on bats. We utilized a decade(2012–2022) of acoustic monitoring data collected in North Carolina, United States, to investigate the relationship between bat activity, lunar cycle, and light pollution. We examined whether the amount of lunar illumination affected species-specific nightly activity and whether hourly bat activity patterns varied between nights with different moon phases. We further investigated if the relationship between bat activity and the lunar cycle might be altered by light *** We found that seven bat species showed activity variation across nights in relation to the amount of moon illumination when ALAN was absent. In general, bats were less active on full moon nights compared to new moon nights. Light pollution interacted with the bat–lunar relationship in five of the seven species, masking the effect of the lunar cycle. We identified delayed bat activity patterns on nights with a full or waxing moon in seven species, and light pollution altered that pattern in four species. Overall, ALAN was associated with decreased bat activity inde-pendent of lunar cycle *** Our study demonstrated that at a broad spatial scale, ALAN negatively affected many North American temperate bat species and altered their lunar chronobiology. As light pollution is spreading to historically dark areas and habitats, ALAN might couple with other threats, such as the white-nose syndrome or climate change, to cause cascading damage in the environment that depends on ecosystem services such as pest control provided by bats. Background:Hodgkin lymphoma refers to a malignancy of the lymphatic ***-nodal Hodgkin lymphoma(ENHL)is a rare variant consisting of Hodgkin lymphoma occurring outside the lymphatic *** investigating the epidemiology associated with ENHL are ***:618 ENHL cases were analyzed using the National Cancer Institute’s Surveillance,Epidemiology,and End Results(SEER)database(2000–2020).Demographics including sex,race/ethnicity,rural-urban continuum,age group(categorized as adolescent and young adult(AYA)if between years of 15 and 39,and adult if over the age of 40),and living status(alive/deceased)were examined,with survival status as the main ***:This study included 335 males(54.2%)and 283 females(45.8%).Of this total,47.9%were in the AYA *** terms of ethnicity the distribution was 12.5%non-Hispanic Black,67.5%non-Hispanic white,5.2%non-Hispanic Asian/Pacific Islander,and 14.9%*** analyses evidenced significant differences in survival by age group with 91.6%in AYA vs.72.4%in adults(P<0.001)alive by the end of the study *** analyses identified age as a key predictor of survival,as the AYA patients had a lower odds ratio for death(odds ratio=0.25,P<0.001).In addition,survival outcomes were also impacted by race,with non-Hispanic Blacks showing higher survival *** treatment,27.0%of patients underwent surgery,with 10.2%receiving post-surgery radiation,reducing odds of mortality(odds ratio=0.32,P=0.046).Conclusion:The background research as such,tends to affirm that these two factors–age and race are quite crucial in the prognosis as well as management of *** to adults,AYA patients had significantly lower odds of death,while non-Hispanic Black individuals exhibited reduced survival *** should be noted that 27.0%of patients underwent surgery with 10.2%receiving post-operative radiation which led to decrease in mortality ***,these results reiterate the nec

The conventional approach for fabricating polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS)microfluidic devices is a lengthy and inconvenient procedure and may require a clean-room microfabrication facility often not readily ***,living cells can’t survive the oxygen-plasma and high-temperature-baking treatments required for covalent bonding to assemble multiple PDMS parts into a leak-free device,and it is difficult to disassemble the devices because of the irreversible covalent *** a result,seeding/loading cells into and retrieving cells from the devices are ***,we discovered that decreasing the curing agent for crosslinking the PDMS prepolymer increases the noncovalent binding energy of the resultant PDMS surfaces without plasma or any other *** enables convenient fabrication of leak-free microfluidic devices by noncovalent binding for various biomedical applications that require high pressure/flow rates and/or long-term cell culture,by simply hand-pressing the PDMS parts without plasma or any other treatment to bind/*** this method,multiple types of cells can be conveniently loaded into specific areas of the PDMS parts before assembly and due to the reversible nature of the noncovalent bonding,the assembled device can be easily disassembled by hand peeling for retrieving *** with 3D printers that are widely available for making masters to eliminate the need of photolithography,this facile yet rigorous fabrication approach is much faster and more convenient for making PDMS microfluidic devices than the conventional oxygen plasma-baking-based irreversible covalent bonding method.
