Spectophotometric method for determination of certain cephalosporins using 4-chloro-7-nitrobenzo-2-oxa-1,3-diazole (NBD-Cl)

A simple, accurate and precise spectrophotometric method has been proposed for the determination of eleven cephalosporins, namely;cefaclor monohydrate, cefadroxil monohydrate, cefalexin anhydrous, cefradine anhydrous, cefotaxime sodium, cefoperazone sodium, ceftriaxone sodium, ceftazidime penthydrate, cefazolin sodium, cefixime and cefpodoxime pro- xetil in bulk drug and in pharmaceutical formulations. The method depends on hydrolysis of the studied drugs using 0.5M NaOH at 100°C and subsequent reaction of the formed sulfide ions with NBD-Cl (4-chloro-7-nitrobenzo-2-oxa-1, 3-diazole) to form a yellow-colored chromogen measured at 390 nm. Different variables affecting the reaction (e.g. NaOH concentration, hydrolysis time, NBD-Cl concentration and diluting solvent) were studied and optimized. Under the optimum conditions, linear relationships with good correlation coefficients (0.9990- 0.9999) were found in the range of 5-160 μg mL-1 for all studied drugs. The limits of assay detection and quantitiation ranged from 0.289 to 5.867 and from 0.878 to 17.778 μg mL-1;respectively. The accuracy and precision of the proposed method were satisfactory. The method was successfully applied for analysis of the studied drugs in their pharmaceutical formulations and the recovery percentages ranged from 96.6 to 103.5%.

A simple, precise and accurate kinetic spectro-photometric method for determination of ce-fradine anhydrous, cefaclor monohydrate, ce-fadroxil monohydrate, cefalexin anhydrous and cefixime in bulk and in pharmaceutical formula-tions has been developed. The method based on a kinetic investigation of the reaction of the free carboxylic acid group of the drug with a mixture of potassium iodate and potassium iodide at room temperature to form yellow coloured triiodide ions. The reaction was followed up spectrophotometrically by measuring the increase in absorbance at 352 nm as a function of time. The initial rate, fixed time, variable time and rate-constant methods were adopted for constructing the calibration curves but fixed time method has been found to be more applicable. The analytical performance of the method, in terms of accuracy and precision, was statistically validated;the results were satisfactory. The method has been successfully applied to the determination of the studied drugs in commercial pharmaceutical formulations. Statistical comparison of the results with a well established reported method showed excellent ag- reement and proved that there is no significant difference in the accuracy and precision.

Recently, several approaches were followed for the enhancement and better resource utilization in mobile networks;this is to achieve energy efficient consumption for production and delivery of an information bit. Using Cognitive Femto cells (as a member of the small base stations’ family) proves that, it is an efficient solution for achieving this goal[1]. The use of Energy Efficiency term η has become one of the major indices for measuring the performance of these systems. η is the measure of the overall system Capacity (C)?in bps/Hz versus the Consumed Energy (E) in Joules [2]. In consistence with many researches, analytic models and empirical measurements, η will be investigated throughout the course of this work. Cognitive Base Stations (CBS) (as an element of the system model) which performs the traffic offloading operations is proved to enhance η performance. In this work, a combination of both analytic and simulation models are used to construct a practical system model. The obtained model is then used to illustrate the effect of different operational parameters that are involved in the η problem. On the other hand, the current paper tries to focus on the selection criteria that may be used to design the cooperative cognitive networks in order to achieve the best η indices. Both of CBSs radii as well as the inter-separation distances (between CBSs and MBS location) are examined to obtain best η index for different operation scenarios;in addition, both of capacity and energy consumption are taken into consideration based on practical operating measures. This work proposed several nonlinear equations with fixed parameters to be used by field engineers to achieve the results with minimum reduced computation complexity. So, the current work may be of importance for the regulator bodies as well as the cognitive mobile operators.

Starting from 4,6-dimethyl-2-oxo-(1H)-3-pyridinecarbonitrile 1 and 3-aminopyrazolopyridine 4, a series of cyanopyri- dine derivatives 3a-i, Schiff bases 5a-f, urea and thiourea derivatives 6a-b, amide derivatives 7a-h, pyridopyra- zolopy-rimidine 8a-b and pyridopyrazolotriazine 10a-b were synthesized. Activities of eleven representative compounds were evaluated against A-549 (lung), HEPG2 (liver) and HCT-116 (colon) cancer cell lines. The findings revealed that some of the synthesized compounds showed remarkable anticancer activities, especially 8b which displayed the highest activity among the tested compounds with IC50 equal to 2.9, 2.6 and 2.3 μmol. In addition to synthesis and biological activities, we present discussion about the rationale of the design and activity of the potent compound 8b using struc- ture-based modeling tools.

Fabrication and Characterisation of Novel Natural Lycopodium clavatum Sporopollenin Microcapsules Loaded In-Situ with Nano-Magnetic Humic Acid-Metal Complexes

Sporopollenin exines microcapsules, derived from the naturally occurring spores of Lycopodium clavatum, have been loaded in-situ with humic acid sodium salt-Zinc (HA-Zn) complex. The chemical treatment method utilised to prepare the sporopollenin microcapsules from raw spores was discussed and the resulted sporopollenin microcapsules were characterised using SEM, TGA and FTIR. Metal complexes of the sodium salt of humic acid and zinc ion were prepared using different protocols and in-situ loaded into the pre-treated sporopollenin microcapsules. The resulted complex was characterised before and after the encapsulation process using FTIR, TGA and XRD techniques. The morphology of the empty and loaded sporopollenin was not altered. Infrared spectroscopy revealed an increase in the absorption for COO– vibrations at 1583 and 1384 cm–1 in the FTIR spectra of HA-Zn complex compared to that of the original sodium salt of humic acid, indicative of bonding of the metal ions in hydrated form to the carboxyl or phenolic hydroxyl groups or both of the sodium humate molecules. TGA results of the HA-Zn complex loaded sporopollenin showed that around %15 of residual HA-Zn was successfully encapsulated indicative of the efficiency of the protocol used. We showed also that biodegradable magnetite nanoparticles can be surface modified with HA and encapsulated into sporopollenin. The resulted biosorbents microcapsules can be used for enhanced magnetic removal of either heavy metals or HA from different aqueous media.

This work is to observe the performance of PC based robot manipulator under general purpose （Windows）, Soft （Linux） and Hard （RT Linux） Real Time Operating Systems （OS）. The same open loop control system is observed in different operating systems with and without multitasking environment. The Data Acquisition （DAQ, PLC-812PG） card is used as a hardware interface. From the experiment, it could be seen that in the non real time operating system （Windows）, the delay of the control system is larger than the Soft Real Time OS （Linux）. Further, the authors observed the same control system under Hard Real Time OS （RT-Linux）. At this point, the experiment showed that the real time error （jitter） is minimum in RT-Linux OS than the both of the previous OS. It is because the RT-Linux OS kernel can set the priority level and the control system was given the highest priority. The same experiment was observed under multitasking environment and the comparison of delay was similar to the preceding evaluation.

Determination of the Potency of Extracted, Purified and Formulated Insulin from the Pancreatic Organs of the Sudanese Beef Cattle

The treatment of type 1 diabetes is mainly dependent on insulin therapy and current formulated insulin formulations are used for its control all over the world. The presented study was designed to evaluate the potency of extracted, purified and formulated insulin from the pancreatic organs of the Sudanese beef cattle. Twenty healthy rabbits were used to conduct the study following subcutaneous administration of the sample insulin, to determine the hypoglycemic effect and to analyze the potency of the testing insulin by the hypoglycemic seizure method, blood sugar method and glucose enzymatic colorimetric test (GOD-PAP) respectively. The potency of the injected insulin samples was estimated by comparing the variation in blood glucose levels produced in the treated animals with that produced by a standard insulin preparation under the suitable conditions of the blood sugar method. The results revealed that the potency of the testing beef insulin samples was slightly higher (i.e., 2.2 USP units/ml, 9%) compared to the standard and assumed potency of the prepared insulin preparations (i.e., 1-2 USP units/ml) which indicated that the solvents and diluents used to prepare the assay dilution might be of higher potency and must be diluted to such an extent that the testing insulin potency must be compatible with the standard dilutions. Furthermore, to determine the choice of an assay to analyze the potency of insulin preparations, not only the accuracy of the result but also the purpose for which the test is to be used and the time limit must be taken into consideration.

Empty Sella Syndrome: A Case Report and Literature Review

An empty sella occurs due to herniation of the arachnoid through an incompetent diaphragma sellae. Over time, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pulsations may enlarge the sella and compress the gland against the floor of the sella. Empty sella syndrome is considered as a less common entity and is usually asymptomatic and an incidental finding. However, it can be a manifestation of increased intracranial pressure and can be occasionally severe. Compression of the pituitary gland may affect function, or traction on the optic chiasm and nerves may cause visual symptoms. An empty sella may be classified as primary when this occurs in persons who have not received pituitary radiation or pituitary surgery, while an empty sella discovered following such procedures is classified as secondary empty sella. In this report, we presented a 41-year-old multiparous patient who presented to us with symptoms of headache and left sided hemi-sensory disturbance. Examination was unrevealing except for the fact that she was obese. On evaluation, she was detected to have impaired blood sugars, dyslipidemia and vitamin insufficiency. MRI brain revealed presence of Empty Sella. Further hormonal analysis was normal. She was treated conservatively and regular follow-up was advised.
