Association between vision and cognitive function among community-dwelling older adults in Selangor,Malaysia

AIM:To determine the association between distance and near visual acuity(VA)and cognitive function among older adults in Selangor,***:A total of 230 older adults(age≥60y)participated in this *** distance and near VA were measured using the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study Chart and Lighthouse Near Visual Acuity Chart,*** cognitive function was assessed using the Mini-Mental State Examination(M-MSE)and the Malay language version of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment(M-MoCA).Digit Symbol(DS)subtest was used to measure information ***:No significant association was observed between vision and M-MSE and M-MoCA ***,poor distance and near VA were found to be significantly associated with low DS scores[distance VA:β=-0.01,R2=0.1,P=0.02;odds ratio(OR)=2.84,95%confidence interval(CI),1.10-7.33,P=0.03;near VA:β=-0.05,R2=0.08,P=0.00;OR=3.32,95%CI,1.28-8.59,P=0.01].CONCLUSION:Poor vision is associated with a decline in information processing in older adults and substantiates the importance of preserving good vision in maintaining cognitive function.

Simulation of Plasma Density Gradient Generation by Wakefield and the Effect of Probe Pulse Time-Delay on the Photon Acceleration

Laser Wakefield is produced by ultra-high intensity laser pulse interacting with underdense plasma with special conditions for the laser wavelength and plasma density. In this mechanism, nonlinear forces appear due to the very high amplitudes of the electromagnetic wave and these forces evacuate plasma electrons from the path of the laser pulse leading to very high electron plasma density gradients. Due to the electrostatic forces which result from these density perturbations, the electrons move very fast in oscillatory manner to restore neutrality creating a wake of electron density perturbations behind the laser pulse. Detailed investigation has been dealt with the time-delay between the driver laser pulse and the probe pulse which can affect the production of high plasma gradients needed for photon acceleration process.

Hypoglycemic and antioxidant activities of Caesalpinia ferrea Martius leaf extract in streptozotocininduced diabetic rats

Objective: To evaluate the antidiabetic and antioxidant ef ects of aqueous ethanolic extract of Caesalpinia ferrea(C. ferrea) leaf in normal and streptozotocin(STZ) induced diabetic ***: Male Sprague-Dawley rats divided into 6 groups of 6 rats each were assigned into diabetic and non-diabetic groups. Diabetes was induced in rats by single intraperitoneal administration of STZ(65 mg/kg body weight). C. ferrea extract at the doses of 250 and 500 mg/kg body weight was orally administered to both diabetic and non-diabetic animals for a period of 30 days. After completion of experimental duration serum, liver and pancreas were used for evaluating biochemical and histopathological ***: Oral administration of C. ferrea leaf extract significantly reduced elevated serum glucose, α-amylase, liver function levels and signii cantly increased serum insulin, total protein and body weight as well as improved lipid proi le due to diabetes. Furthermore, the treatment resulted in a marked increase in glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, catalase and reduced glutathione, and diminished levels of lipid peroxidation in liver and pancreas of diabetic rats. Histopathological studies demonstrated the reduction in the pancreas and liver damage and coni rmed the biochemical i ***: From the present study, it can be concluded that the C. ferrea leaf extract ef ectively improved hyperglycaemia while inhibiting the progression of oxidative stress in STZ-induced diabetic rats. Hence, it can be used in the management of diabetes mellitus.

Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of mortality and morbidity despite the identification of major risk factors and risk reduction strategies. Myocardial infarction (MI) is a relevant cardiovascular worldwide event for morbidity and mortality. In most cases, sudden cardiac death is triggered by ischemia-related ventricular tachyarrhythmia and accounts for 50% of deaths from cardiovascular disease in developed countries. This is a descriptive analytical case control study aimed to determine D-dimer, PT and PTT level and among patients with acute myocardial infarction conducted in Sudan cardiac center hospital. Thirty patients after MI and twenty normal controls have been studied. The MI patients also include co-exist disease diabetes and hypertension, they receive different anticoagulants therapy. The result demonstrates a significant increase post MI in the mean level of D-dimer (p = 0.00) whereas none significantly compares to control group. There are no differences between INR (0.393), PTT (0.648) and PT (0.393), parameters between cases and controls. In conclusion, our study reveals higher D-dimer level among patients than the control. In conclusion, serum D-dimer levels appear to be useful for diagnosing MI and may assist in the prediction of mortality among those patients which are presented with acute chest pain or known diagnosed with MI and should be done as indicator for thrombosis risk during therapy in post MI.

The Impact of the Techniques and Tactics Appropriate by the Athletes in Phase Triple Jump and Their Relationships with the Finale Results

The purposes of this study were to describe and compare the techniques used by elite world triple jumper and the Algerian elite team to determine the impact of distribution modality phases allowing the elite to exceeds 17-meter. Our subjects were two world elite 2009 and two Algerian national elite 2013. In the lack of new technology Modem measuring instruments kinematics or kinetics, our study based in measure of the Phase distribution ratio as measure of Stride length Jump distance. That literature review two schools, the Russian technique （which emphasizes the hop phase） and the Polish technique （which emphasizes the jump phase）. Our aims for this study are： Are there any statistically significant differences between the results of the samples in the distance achieved？ Are there any statistically significant differences between practical Ratio relative distances （world 2009-national 2013）？ Are there any statistically significant differences between Stride length phase distances （world 2009-national 2013）？ For that, we have chosen the analysis of variance and correlation of the distances achieved in each of the phases with the official distance of jumper and ＂T＂ student to compare implementation distribution of phases （hop, step and jump） with the results accuses. Based on the practices and weaknesses of elites in practice, we confirm：（1） All the samples practice the Russian technique as model in the distribution of the phase ratio; （2） The problem of our elites is in the hop phase distribution and its relationship with other phases; （3） Improve achieve horizontal vertical velocity in hop phase as solution.

Minimally Invasive Hind-Foot Fusion in Charcot Patients

Background: Hindfoot fusion, is a fusion of the talonavicular, talocalcaneal, and calcaneocuboid joints and is commonly performed for patients complaining of pain, chronic instability and gross deformity as a result of hindfoot pathology. Objective: This study aimed to assess the functional outcomes of the patients underwent hindfoot fusion, the post-operative complications and patient’s satisfaction. Methodology: This study is a prospective cohort study was conducted in Future hospital, in Khartoum, Sudan. It involved 30 patients from July 2015-July 2022. Data was collected by the primary researcher using data collection sheet, then it was cleaned and entered into Microsoft excel data sheet and was analysed using SPSS version 28 software. Results: 33.3% of the patients are aged 51 - 60 years, and >60 years. Male: Female equals 1:1. 56.7% are for the left side, only 23.3% developed complications. 63.3% patients are fully satisfied. There is a significant correlation between the AOFAS score before and after the operation. Also, a significant correlation between the means of AOFAS score after with the complications and the satisfaction of the patients. Conclusion: Minimally invasive tibio-talo-calcaneal is an alternative procedure for the treatment of severe Charcot arthropathy of the ankle. The expected functional outcome is impressive and comparable with the open surgery. However, the post-operative complications are prevalent in 23.3% of patients. Most candidates are fully satisfied with the procedure.

Frequency of Hypocalcaemia after Thyroid Surgery in the Omdurman Military Hospital in 2018

Background: Hypocalcaemia is a serious complication that may follows thyroid surgeries. So, the purpose of this study was to determine the frequency of postoperative hypocalcaemia after thyroid surgery in Omdurman military hospital (Jan.-July 2018). Materials & Methods: In this retrospective facility based cross sectional study, 124 files were reviewed, the recorded data were age, sex, residence, diagnosis, type of surgery & postoperative calcium level, data were collected by a designed pretested checklist, data were analyzed by SPSS version 20 by using frequencies & cross tabulations, for postoperative hypocalcaemia. Results: Majority of the patients were between 21 - 41 years 49.2%, majority of them were females 83.9%. 97.6% of them underwent total thyroidectomy, 25% of the patients developed postoperative hypocalcaemia, also we found that there was no relation between sex, type of thyroid surgery & development of postoperative hypocalcaemia (P > 0.001). Conclusion: Our research showed that 25% of the patients who underwent thyroid surgery developed postoperative hypocalcaemia.

Postoperative Complication in Overweight Patients Undergoing Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery

Background: Obesity has a great impact on overall mortality and morbidity in cardiac surgery. The magnitude of obesity is defined by means of body mass index (BMI). At this study we aim to correlate between grade of BMI and postoperative complications in patients undergoing coronary revascularization. Methods: A prospective observational study was conducted in Ain Shams University hospitals and the National Heart Institute of Egypt. 98 patients with multi-vessel CAD and candidate for CABG were included in the study and divided into two groups Group I: 53 patients with BMI over 30. Group II: 45 patients with a BMI under 30. The primary endpoint was wound infection and mediastinitis. Secondary endpoints included mortality, prolonged ICU and hospital stay, stroke, renal and hepatic impairment. Results: As regard primary ending point, eight patients of Group I had their wounds infected which is significantly higher than the other group (p-value 0.034). The total ward stay in days was significantly higher in Group I (p-value 0.027). Conclusion: BMI more than 30 is associated with increased rates of wound complications either superficial or deep wound infections. Robust measures should be taken to prevent such grave complications.

Review of Biochemical and Nutritional Constituents in Different Green Leafy Vegetables in Oman

Green leafy vegetables are very nutrient-dense and incredibly healthy. They are vital sources of antioxidants and they are the best which are very beneficial to providing weight loss and maintenance, because it keeps you feeling full and helps control your hunger. Also, leafy vegetables are full of fiber, vitamins;minerals and substances that help protect you from disease [1] [2]. For this we choose five types of vegetables which are lettuce, cabbage, parsley, spinach and arugula to estimate some nutritional values present on them such as: carbohydrate (sucrose, fructose, glucose and starch), protein, amino acids (lysine and phenyl alanine), vitamin C (ascorbic acid) and lipid. The results obtained were analyzed and the relative percentages of these compounds were tabulated. Among the five green leafy vegetables the glucose content was highest in lettuce and was least in arugula. Among the five green leafy vegetables the fructose content was highest in parsley and was least in cabbage. Among the five green leafy vegetables the sucrose content was highest in parsley and was least in cabbage. Among the five green leafy vegetables the starch content was highest in lettuce and was least in spinach. Among the five green leafy vegetables the ascorbic acid content was highest in lettuce and was least in parsley and arugula. Among the five green leafy vegetables the protein content was highest in parsley and was least in cabbage. Among the five green leafy vegetables the lysine content was highest in cabbage and was least in arugula. Among the five green leafy vegetables the phenyl alanine content was highest in cabbage and was least in spinach. Among the five green leafy vegetables the lipid content was highest in lettuce and was least in cabbage.
