This study focused on the geochemical, mineralogical and technological characterization of clays in makthar area (Central of Tunisia) of Cretaceous-Paleogene. Its aims are to identify and promote use in the field of ceramics industry. The result of the mineralogical analysis of clays showed a dominance of illite with a percentage higher than 65%, of kaolinite and smectite with percentages of 15%. Geochemical analysis of the major elements of clay showed a SiO2 content exceeding 29% and a percentage of Al2O3 higher than 7.5%. The Fe2O3 percentage was ranging from 3% to 8%. The percentage of CaO was between 22.5% and 28% while that of K2O is 4%. The percentages of SO4, mgO and NaO2 were in very small fractions. Granulometric and microgranulometric analysis showed that the clay fraction (m) varies from 30% to 37%. The plasticity index showed the plasticity character of clays which presented a specific surface area ranging from 112 m2/g to 178 m2/g reflecting illite dominance. Drying behavior indicated that clay mixture had a drying shrinkage less than 7%, while the firing shrinkage didn’t exceed 2% giving the possibility of clay using in the ceramics field.

Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is characterized by the deficiency of specific symptoms in the early stages of the disease and a poor prognosis. Biomarkers that have the diagnostic ability to distinguish between inflam.a.ion, cirrhosis, and HCC are needed for early case detection. midKine (mK) is overexpressed in many malignancies, including hepatocellular carcinoma, gastric carcinoma, colon carcinoma, lung carcinoma, urinary bladder carcinoma and prostate carcinoma. Objective: The objective is to evaluate serum midKine as a marker of HCC in HCV-related liver cirrhosis. Patients and methods: This study included 50 patients with HCC (on top of hepatitis C virus-related cirrhosis), 20 cirrhotic patients due to chronic HCV infection, and 10 normal subjects as a control group. History, examination, and laboratory investigations were performed on all subjects in the three groups including mK and Alpha fetoprotein (AFP) serum levels. Results: Serum levels of AFP and mK were higher in the HCC group than in the other study groups (P Conclusion: midKine is a novel sensitive biomarker that could be used for early detection of HCC and has a high significance in differentiation between cirrhosis and HCC cases. midKine levels are correlated with HCC stages and sizes.

Introduction: Common bile duct stone (CBDS) is a common clinical problem that can cause serious complications, such as acute cholangitis and pancreatitis. It is important to have an accurate, safe, and reliable method for the definitive diagnosis of CBDS before proceeding to therapeutic endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancrea-tography (ERCP). Objective: To com.a.e the accuracy of trans-abdominal ultra-sound (TAUS) as a diagnostic tool at our institution—Kurdistan Centre for Gastroen-terology & Hepatology (KCGH)—with invasive tool like ERCP in the diagnosis of bile duct stones, using specificity, sensitivity, and positive and negative predictive values. Patient and method: After obtaining ethical committee approval & informed consent from every patient. This was a prospective study conducted on 71 patients (24 male patients and 47 females patients) where suspected to have CBDS depending on history, clinical suspicion and blood tests. Their ages range between (2 - 88 years). Both TAUS and ERCP were performed. Final diagnosis was confirmed de-pending on ERCP as it served as a diagnostic standard in diagnosing CBDS. Result: In 71 patients suspected to have CBDS by TAUS, only 46 patients had stone (65%), and 55 patients had stone by ERCP (77%). In our result, sensitivity, specificity, pos-itive predictive value and negative predictive value for TAUS were 80%, 87.5%, 65.5% and 56%, respectively. Conclusion: TAUS can play an important role as an initial screening procedure for CBDS detection because of the various advantages like easy availability, cost effectiveness, no requirement of contrast material and lack of ionizing radiation but should done with other imaging modality to avoid se-rious complication of ERCP.

Introduction: Penile skin loss poses a particular challenge for reconstruction to the plastic surgeon. These defects, depending on their size, have been reconstructed using skin grafts or regional flap. Patients & methods: Ten patients with variable sized penile skin defects were included in this work. Scrotal fascio-myo-cutaneous (Dartos) flap was harvested and used for penile shaft resurfacing. Results: All harvested flaps were successful. None of them showed any ischemic manifestations. Discussion: Despite being a simple and robust flap, its use for resurfacing of moderate to extensive penile skin defects isn’t popular. We propose the use of Dartos flap as a good alternative for challenging moderate to extensive penile skin losses.

Background:?Ovarian cancer (OC) is the most lethal gynecologic malignancy. About 70% of ovarian cancer patients have advanced disease and often not totally resectable. Previous studies of neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) followed by interval debulking surgery (IDS) versus primary debulking surgery (PDS) give inconsistent results. The aim of this retrospective study is to evaluate the outcome of the neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by IDS versus PDS followed by adjuvant chemotherapy for the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) stage III epithelial ovarian cancer.?methods:?This study was performed on eligible patients with ovarian cancer admitted in Surgical Oncology and medical Oncology departments at South Egypt Cancer Institute-Assiut University in the period from January 2010 to December 2015. Patients were divided into two groups, the first group included those who have NACT and underwent IDS plus adjuvant chemotherapy, and the second group included those who underwent PDS followed by adjuvant chemotherapy.?Results:?This study included 380 cases. One hundred and fifty-four patients (40.53%) had IDS. The remaining two hundred and twenty-six patients (59.47%) underwent PDS. In this study, treatment modality was significant for both disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS). DFS was significantly reduced after IDS when com.a.ed to PDS (median DFS: 33.00 months vs. 45.00 months, respectively;p??0.001). Also, OS was significantly reduced after IDS when com.a.ed to PDS. (median OS: 43 months vs. 46 months, respectively;p = 0.047). moreover, this drop of the survivals mainly occurred in specific subgroups such as the elderly patients, patients with bad performance status, suboptimal cytoreduction, as well as high-grade tumors. Objectives: Central cord syndrome has been reported to occur with particular frequency among older persons with cervical spondylosis who sustain hyperextension neck injury. This study aims to determine the efficacy of early surgical decompression (within 24 hours) of traumatic central cord syndrome patients in com.a.ison with conservative management for central cord syndrome to determine a line of management to these cases. methods: 60 patients suffering from.a.ute traumatic central cord syndrome with various neurological deficits were divided into 2 groups, group A (conservatively managed) and group B (surgically managed). Patients in group B were operated upon within 24 hr. of trauma by posterior decompression. Clinical assessment of each patient on admission, discharge and 3 months follow-ups was done using the ASIA Im.a.rment Scale, FIm, Ashworth scale, bladder function, and neuropathic pain symptoms. Results: Data collected from both groups showed, group A (the conservative group) consisted of 22 male (73.3%) and 8 female subjects (26.6%) with a m.a. age of 57.5 years while in group B (surgical group) the sample consisted of 20 male (66.6%) and 10 female subjects (33.3%) with a m.a. age of 58.6 years. There was an improvement in our study—according to ASIA and FIm scales—in 8 patients of 30 (26.6%) in the conservative group. In the surgical group, improvement in 16 patients (53.3%). Conclusions: Early surgical decompression with laminectomy and duroplasty can be considered a reliable modality in the management of traumatic CCS and can effectively reduce the secondary injury of the spinal cord and consequent deterioration with less hospital stay.

Aim： To access beta-endorphin levels in serum.a. well as seminal plasma in different infertile male groups. methods： Beta-endorphin was estimated in the serum.a.d seminal plasma by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay （ELISA） method in 80 infertile men equally divided into four groups： non-obstructive azoosperm.a.（NOA）, obstructive azoosperm.a.（OA）, congenital bilateral absent vas deferens （CBVAD） and asthenozoosperm.a. The results were com.a.ed to those of 20 normozoospermic proven fertile men. Results： There was a decrease in the m.a. levels of betaendorphin in the seminal plasma of all successive infertile groups （m.a. ± SD： NOA 51.30 ± 27.37, OA 51.88 ± 9.47, CBAVD 20.36 ± 13.39, asthenozoosperm.a.49.26 ± 12.49 pg/mL, respectively） com.a.ed to the normozoospermic fertile control （87.23 ± 29.55 pg/mL）. This relation was not present in m.a. serum level of beta-endorphin between four infertile groups （51.09 ± 14.71, 49.76 ± 12.4, 33.96 ± 7.2, 69.1 ± 16.57 pg/mL, respectively） and the fertile control group （49.26 ± 31.32 pg/mL）. The CBVAD group showed the lowest seminal plasma m.a. level of beta-endorphin. Testicular contribution of seminal beta-endorphin was estimated to be approximately 40%. Seminal beta-endorphin showed significant correlation with the sperm concentration （r = 0.699, P = 0.0188） and nonsignificant correlation with its serum level （r = 0.375, P = 0.185） or with the sperm motility percentage （r = 0.470, P = 0.899）. Conclusion： The estimation of beta-endorphin alone is not conclusive to evaluate male reproduction as there are many other opiates acting at the hypothalamic pituitary gonadal axis.

Traditional medicinal plants are one of the potential sources of antimicrobial drugs and there is a great concern in the use and development of herbal medicine for the treatment of various infections. This study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial, and antioxidant activities of Dichrostachys cinera ethanolic leaves extract and to determine the components of the crude extract. D. cinera extract was evaluated against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853. The antibacterial, antioxidant activities and active constituents were determined using standard methods. Antibacterial activity of the crude extract findings showed that all bacterial candidates were susceptible where S. aureus represent mIC at 12.5 mg/ml and mBC at 25 mg/ml, E. coli and P. aeruginosa both showed mIC 25 mg/ml and mBC 50 mg/ml. In the free radical scavenging assay of the extract and the standard quercetin at concentrations of 250 μg/ml, 125 μg/ml, 50 μg/ml, 10 μg/ml, and 5 μg/ml. The radical scavenging activity for the extract was about 92%, 89.6%, 86.8%, 82.8% and 37.8% respectively, com.a.ed to quercetin which gave 89.7%, 85.8%, 62.1%, 55.5%, and 45% radical scavenging activity. The GC-ms analysis of the total constituents demonstrated that 1,6-Anhydro-2,4-dideoxy-.beta.-D-ribo-hexo (21.26%) with different peaks, followed by Glycerin (11.56%), 1,2,3-Cyclopentanetriol (10.18%), 8,11,14-Eicosatrienoic acid, (Z,Z,Z)-(6.18%), 1H-Pyrrole, 1-methyl-(6.08%), Phytol (5.91%) and 7-Bromo-6-(2-diethylaminoethoxy)-2,3-dihyd (5.44%) as major components in the extract. Finally, this study provided useful information on the therapeutic potential of D. cinera as an antibacterial agent and recommended to be evaluated against a wide range of Bacterial and fungal strains using different solvents and different parts from the plant.

Quantitative Determination of Cd and Pb in Tissues and Organs of Chickens Raised in El-Jabel Alakhder Region—Libya

This study was carried out to determine the concentration of Cd, and Pb in the tissues of thigh, breast, liver, heart, gizzard, neck and skin of chicken. All samples were collected in the summer of 2004 from three different commercial farms of chickens production located in different areas of EL-Jabal Alakhder region at Libya country (Gernada, EL-Abrak and Sousa). For com.a.ison, the metals were also determined in the same tissues of the chickens which produced in the national station of poultry production at EL-Akhoria city. The metals in the chickens feed and in water for both drinking and cleaning inside the slaughter house were also determined. The results revealed that the highest concentrations of Cd were found in neck, liver and heart while the neck and skin tissues contained the highest level of Pb. However, the tissues of thigh and breast flesh had the lowest level of metals. The levels of Cd in the different tissues ranged from 0.008 to 0.227 ppm.a.d from 0.093 to 2.391 ppm for Pb. The results revealed that the levels of Cd in neck from.a.l farms, liver from both EL-Akhoria and Gernada farms. Levels of Pb in the neck and skin from.a.l farms were exceeding the permitted limits according to some European regulations. The results also indicate that the high concentrations of Cd in some tissues were due to the effect of high levels of these metals in the feed of birds. However the drinking and cleaning water had no effects on the level of the metals in the different tissues.
