Contribution to the Ground Water Hydrology of the Quaternary Aquifer in West Ismailia Area, Egypt

Hydrologic conditions of the ground water of the Quaternary aquifer in west Ismailia area, Egypt, were characterized based on new hydrologic data collected in 2017. The Quaternary aquifer consists of alluvial deposits. The grain size distribution results indicate that the major part of the aquifer deposits is formed of medium to coarse grained sand with medium uniformity coefficients ranging between 2.5 and 10. They also reflect the heterogeneity, anisotropy and high productivity of the aquifer. The estimated aquifer parameters range from 29% to 41% for total porosity, from 18.71 m/day to 63.95 m/day for horizontal hydraulic conductivity, from 8.94 m/day to 61.6 m/day for vertical hydraulic conductivity, from 1.01 to 4.27 for anisotropy and from 1870 m2/day to 6549 m2/day for transmissivity. The ground water flows mainly from the north and northeast recharge sources (Ismailia and el Manaief canals) and from the south recharge area (Miocene aquifer), with an average hydraulic gradient of 0.00438. The recharge rate to the aquifer (from the southern area) and the Darcy’s velocity of ground water are estimated to be 447 × 106 m3/year and 0.203 m/day (on average), respectively. A great change in the hydrologic setting of the aquifer is occurred during the period of 1992-2017, where the groundwater flow has changed during that period. The aquifer contains fresh to saline water. An oxidizing (alkaline) environment is reported for the aquifer, as revealed from the relationship between the redox potential (185 - 836 mV) and pH (5.2 - 7.5 standard units). This indicated the capability of ground water to dissolve heavy metals associated to rock-forming minerals. A wide variation in the concentrations of total dissolved solids (320 - 7385 mg/l) and dissolved oxygen (2.13 - 8.4 mg/l) in the Quaternary aquifer is observed, reflecting the local variation of the environmental and geologic conditions and indicating the influence of different recharge sources.

Study of Groundwater in Northeast Cairo Area, Egypt

This paper presents a comprehensive hydrogeologic view of the Quaternary aquifer in north eastern Cairo area, Egypt. The hydrogeologic, hydrochemical and isotopic features of the aquifer are determined to assess the groundwater geochemistry and quality for different uses. The groundwater in the aquifer is shallow and flows towards the heavily pumping areas (cultivated and industrial areas). The concentrations of total dissolved solids (TDS) vary considerably in the aquifer, ranging from 225.6 mg/L to 1219 mg/L. Wide variations in the concentrations of major ions, trace elements, nitrate, δ18O and δ2H are detected, indicating the variation in the geologic and recharge conditions. This further indicates the effect of natural processes (weathering, dissolution and ion exchange) as well as anthropogenic activities on the quality of groundwater. Moderate levels of contamination with nitrate, aluminum and manganese are recorded in the groundwater below the cultivated area. The contamination is linked to the extensive use of fertilizers for agriculture and the leakage of wastewater from improper sewage system. The computed nitrate pollution index reveals that about 69.69% of groundwater is safe for drinking, while the rest of groundwater is unsuitable. The calculated water quality index indicates that about 78.79% of groundwater is safe for human consumption and the rest of groundwater is poor for consumption because of the contamination with the high levels of manganese, total hardness, pH, sulphate, aluminum, and nitrate. The contaminated groundwater needs to be treated before consumption. Hence, periodic groundwater quality checks are recommended.

A seismological evidence for the northwestward movement of Africa with respect to Iberia from shear-wave splitting

Seismic anisotropy and its main features along the convergent boundary between Africa and Iberia are detected through the analysis of teleseismic shear-wave splitting. Waveform data generated by 95 teleseismic events recorded at 17 broadband stations deployed in the western Mediterranean region are used in the present study. Although the station coverage is not uniform in the Iberian Peninsula and north- west Africa, significant variations in the fast polarization directions and delay times are observed at stations located at different tectonic domains. Fast polarization directions are oriented predominantly NW-SE at most stations which are close to the plate boundary and in central Iberia; being consistent with the absolute plate motion in the region. In the northern part of the Iberian Peninsula, fast velocity direc- tions are oriented nearly E--W; coincident with previous results. Few stations located slightly north of the plate boundary and to the southeast of lberia show E--W to NE-SW fast velocity directions, which may be related to the Alpine Orogeny and the extension direction in lberia. Delay times vary significantly between 0.2 and 1.9 s for individual measurements, reflecting a highly anisotropic structure beneath the recording stations. The relative motion between Africa and lberia represents the main reason for the observed NW-SE orientations of the fast velocity directions. However, different causes of anisotropy have also to be considered to explain the wide range of the splitting pattern observed in the western Mediterranean region. Many geophysical observations such as the low Pn velocity, lower lithospheric Q values, higher heat flow and the presence of high conductive features support the mantle flow in the western Mediterranean, which may contribute and even modify the splitting pattern beneath the studied region.

A novel collapse prediction index for voltage stability analysis and contingency ranking in power systems

Voltage instability is a serious phenomenon that can occur in a power system because of critical or stressed *** prevent voltage collapse caused by such instability,accurate voltage collapse prediction is necessary for power system planning and *** paper proposes a novel collapse prediction index(NCPI)to assess the volt-age stability conditions of the power system and the critical conditions of *** effectiveness and applicability of the proposed index are investigated on the IEEE 30-bus and IEEE 118-bus systems and compared with the well-known existing indices(Lmn,FVSI,LQP,NLSI,and VSLI)under several power system operations to validate its practicability and *** study also presents the sensitivity assumptions of existing indices and analyzes their impact on voltage collapse *** application results under intensive case studies prove that the proposed index NCPI adapts to several operating power *** results show the superiority of the proposed index in accurately estimating the maximum load-ability and predicting the critical lines,weak buses,and weak areas in medium and large networks during various power load operations and contingencies.A line interruption or generation unit outage in a power system can also lead to voltage collapse,and this is a contingency in the power *** and generation unit outage contingencies are examined to identify the lines and generators that significantly impact system stability in the event of an *** contingencies are also ranked to identify the most severe outages that significantly cause voltage collapse because of the outage of line or generator.

Trends and outcomes of pancreaticoduodenectomy for periampullary tumors: A 25-year single-center study of 1000 consecutive cases

AIM To evaluate the evolution, trends in surgical approaches a n d r e c o n s t r u c t i o n t e c h n i q u e s, a n d i m p o r t a n t lessons learned from performing 1000 consecutive pancreaticoduodenectomies(PDs) for periampullary *** This is a retrospective review of the data of all patients who underwent PD for periampullary tumor during the period from January 1993 to April 2017. The data were categorized into three periods, including early period(1993-2002), middle period(2003-2012), and late period(2013-2017).RESULTS The frequency showed PD was increasingly performed after the year 2000. With time, elderly, cirrhotic and obese patients, as well as patients with uncinate process carcinoma and borderline tumor were increasingly selected for PD. The median operative time and postoperative hospital stay decreased significantly over the periods. Hospital mortality declined significantly, from 6.6% to 3.1%. Postoperative complications significantly decreased, from 40% to 27.9%. There was significant decrease in postoperative pancreatic fistula in the second 10 years, from 15% to 12.7%. There was a significant improvement in median survival and overall survival among the *** Surgical results of PD significantly improved, with mortality rate nearly reaching 3%. Pancreatic reconstruction following PD is still debatable. The survival rate was also improved but the rate of recurrence is still high, at 36.9%.

Upper crustal Poisson's ratio and coda-wave attenuation beneath Eastern Anatolia

The attenuation of seismic waves reflects the elastic nature of the media within which the waves *** this study,we calculate the Coda-Q(Qc),frequency dependence(η),Vp/Vs and Poisson's(υ)ratios by using 2621 vertical component seismograms generated by 987 earthquakes recorded by 13 seismic stations in Eastern Anatolia,and creat a 2-D seismic tomographic Qc model for the *** obtained model provides significant information for exploring the boundaries of adjacent tectonic units within the upper crust and interpreting their dynamic *** 2-D Qc model and the other parameters are consistent with the seismotectonic features of Eastern *** heterogeneous Qc values are observed in the study area dividing it into north-south directed bands of low and high *** highestηvalues were obtained beneath the northwestern and eastern parts of the study ***,high and lowυvalues are obtained in the western and eastern parts of the study area,*** spatial variations in the measured parameters are consistent with many geophysical observations including low Pn velocities,efficient Sn blockage,high heat flow,and widespread *** upper crustal thicknesses and inhomogeneous stress distribution along the East and North Anatolian Fault Zones may also contribute to the observed heterogeneities.

Particle dispersion modeling in ventilated room using artificial neural network

Due to insufficiency of a platform based on experimental results for numerical simulation validation using computational fluid dynamic method(CFD) for different geometries and conditions,in this paper we propose a modeling approach based on the artificial neural network(ANN) to describe spatial distribution of the particles concentration in an indoor *** study was performed for a stationary flow *** database used to build the ANN model was deducted from bibliography literature and composed by 261 points of experimental *** perceptron-type neural network(MLP-ANN) model was developed to map the relation between the input variables and the *** training algorithms were tested to give a choice of the Fletcher conjugate gradient algorithm(TrainCgf).The predictive ability of the results determined by simulation of the ANN model was compared with the results simulated by the CFD *** developed neural network was beneficial and easy to predict the particle dispersion curves compared to CFD *** average absolute error given by the ANN model does not reach 5%against 18%by the Lagrangian model and 28% by the Euler drift-flux model of the CFD approach.

This work presents a compact lowpass-bandpass microstrip diplexer with a novel *** consists of a lowpass filter integrated with a bandpass filter via a simple compact *** proposed bandpass filter consists of four rectangular patch cells and some thin *** step impedance structures,with a radial cell,are applied to achieve a lowpass frequency *** lowpass channel of the introduced diplexer has 2.64 GHz cut-off frequency,whereas,the bandpass channel center frequency is 3.73 GHz for WiMAX applications and covers the frequencies3.31 GHz to 4 *** addition to having novel structures,both filters have other advantages in terms of high return loss,low insertion loss and high *** presented microstrip diplexer has the compact size of 29 mm×13.8 mm×0.762 mm,calculated at 2.64 *** obtained insertion losses are 0.20 dB(for the first channel)and 0.25 dB(for the second channel),which make the proposed diplexer suitable for energy *** stopband properties of both bandpass and lowpass filters are improved by creating several transmission *** comparison results show that the lowest insertion losses,the minimum gap between channels,good return losses,and good isolation are obtained.

On Gaugino Dominated Dark Matter

Using the neutral gauginos of and hybridization ideas below the GUT scale, we approach the Dark Matter particle within the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. In the energy range where supergravity effects can be ignored, it is proposed that such DM particle could be inter- preted in terms of a mixture of Bino and Wino states with a lower bound mass not far above the electroweak scale to account for the observed Dark Matter density. We establish the theoretical origin of this particle and study as well its compositeness and its mass bound.
