Universal linear intensity transformations using spatially incoherent diffractive processors

Under spatially coherent light,a diffractive optical network composed of structured surfaces can be designed to perform any arbitrary complex-valued linear transformation between its input and output fields-of-view(FOVs)if the total number(N)of optimizable phase-only diffractive features is≥~2N_(i)N_(o),where Ni and No refer to the number of useful pixels at the input and the output FOVs,*** we report the design of a spatially incoherent diffractive optical processor that can approximate any arbitrary linear transformation in time-averaged intensity between its input and output *** spatially incoherent monochromatic light,the spatially varying intensity point spread function(H)of a diffractive network,corresponding to a given,arbitrarily-selected linear intensity transformation,can be written as H(m,n;m′,n′)=|h(m,n;m′,n′)|^(2),where h is the spatially coherent point spread function of the same diffractive network,and(m,n)and(m′,n′)define the coordinates of the output and input FOVs,*** numerical simulations and deep learning,supervised through examples of input-output profiles,we demonstrate that a spatially incoherent diffractive network can be trained to all-optically perform any arbitrary linear intensity transformation between its input and output if N≥~2N_(i)N_(o).We also report the design of spatially incoherent diffractive networks for linear processing of intensity information at multiple illumination wavelengths,operating ***,we numerically demonstrate a diffractive network design that performs all-optical classification of handwritten digits under spatially incoherent illumination,achieving a test accuracy of>95%.Spatially incoherent diffractive networks will be broadly useful for designing all-optical visual processors that can work under natural light.

Comparison between Tencel-Flax Blended Slub Yarn and Cotton-Flax Blended Slub Yarn

The blending of different fibers is done for the manufacturing of yarn to ensure the presence of multiple properties in the resultant yarn which is impossible if we use only one type of fiber. Tencel is regenerated cellulosic fiber & flax is natural bast fiber. Tencel shows more versatility than flax. Tencel has a softer feel with a variety of end uses. Tencel is wrinkle-prone and stiff. Tencel shows extreme strength even in wet conditions and at the same time, it is more durable than linen. The most important fact is that the heat dissipation property of flax is 5 times higher than wool & 19 times higher than silk. Linen clothing can lower the body temperature by 3 to 4 degree celsius in hot weather than clothing made of wool and silk. A yarn made of both Tencel & linen (50:50) will contain the properties of both fibers. At the same time, we can make this yarn more aesthetic by incorporating a slub. It was observed that the slub yarn made by blending Tencel and flax fiber shows better properties than the slub yarn of the same count made from the blending of cotton and flax.

Sundarban as a Buffer against Storm Surge Flooding

Sundarban, the largest mangrove forest in the world, is known to act as a buffer against the cyclone and storm surge. Theoretically, Sundarban absorbs the initial thrust of the wind and acts to “resist” the storm surge flooding. The role of Sundarban was evident during the cyclone Sidr when the Sundarban solely defended the initial thrust of the cyclonic wind and the resulting storm surge inundation. In doing this, Sundarban sacrificed 30% of its plant habitats. Although no scientific study has yet been conducted, it is generally believed that Sundarban will continuously play its role as a buffer against the cyclone when landfall of the cyclone is at or close to the Sundarban. Considering these facts, the present study mainly focused on a scientific insight into the role of Sundarban as a buffer against the present-day cyclone and storm surge and also its probable role on the impacts of future storms of similar nature but with different landfall locations. The Delft 3D dashboard and flow model are applied to compute the resulting inundation due to cyclone induced storm surge. The results show that Sundarban indeed acts as a buffer against the storm surge inundation when cyclone landfall is at or close to Sundarban.

Coastal Louisiana has the nation’s most fragile and valuable wetlands,whose loss represents 80% of the total losses in the United *** severely restricted mobility of conventional shoreline protection structures makes them impossible to be *** Wave Suppression and Sediment Collection(WSSC) system is a novel technology of high mobility and compatible with existing shoreline protection *** laboratory studies on WSSC showed great potential for wave reduction and sediment *** current study aimed to optimize the design parameters of WSSC using a validated computational model.A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was developed and validated using experimental data from the previous laboratory ***,a parametric analysis was conducted with a focus on the performance optimization of wave reduction and sediment collection with respect to pipe diameter and face *** results showed that the wave reduction efficiency decreased with increasing pipe diameter and face *** contrast,the sediment transport efficiency was enhanced by increasing pipe diameter but was not affected significantly by varying face slopes.

Improved Self-Pruning for Broadcasting in Ad Hoc Wireless Networks

Reducing number of forwarding nodes is the main focus of any broadcasting algorithm designed for ad-hoc wireless networks. All reliable broadcasting techniques can be broadly classified under proactive and reactive approaches. In proactive approach, a node selects a subset of its neighbors as forwarding node and announces the forwarding node list in the packet header during broadcast. On the other hand, no such forwarding list is generated in reactive approach. Rather, a node (cognitively) determines by itself whether to forward the packet or not based on neighbor information. Dominant pruning and Self-pruning are two example techniques that fall under proactive and reactive approach respectively. Between the two methods, dominant pruning shows better performance than self-pruning in reducing number of forwarding nodes as they work with extended neighbor knowledge. However, appended forwarding node list increases message overhead and consumes more bandwidth. As a result, the approach becomes non-scalable in large networks. In this paper, we propose a reactive broadcasting technique based on self-pruning. The proposed approach dubbed as “Improved Self-pruning based Broadcasting (ISB)” algorithm completes the broadcast with smaller packet header (i.e., with no overhead) but uses extended neighbor knowledge. Simulation results show that ISB outperforms dominant pruning and self-pruning. Furthermore, as the network gets more spread and denser, ISB works remarkably well.

IoT technology has emerged as a valuable tool in modern healthcare, providing real-time monitoring of patients, effective management of healthcare, and proper administration of patient information. The proposed system aims to develop a system that can prevent backward blood flow from stopping saline fluid, as well as monitor the temperature, heart rate, and oxygen level of patients by using multiple sensors like weight, temperature and heart rate, etc. Additionally, the proposed system can monitor the room temperature and humidity for contributing to the patient’s overall comfort. In emergency situations, it includes an emergency push button for quick alert medical staff and initiates timely interventions. It is designed to support nurses and doctors in monitoring patients and providing timely interventions to prevent complications.

Investigation of Antibacterial, Cytotoxic and Antioxidant Properties of the Mangrove Plant Xylocarpus mekongensis

The plant (Xylocarpus mekongensis) of the Sundarbans mangrove origin was evaluated for its antibacterial, cytotoxic and antioxidant properties using methanolic and chloroformic leaf, stem and bark extracts, respectively. The methanolic extracts contained higher amount of total phenolics, flavonoids, tannins than the chloroformic extracts and the result was in correlation with their ferric reducing power ability as well. However, the chloroformic bark extract contained more potent DPPH free radical scavenging activity than others. Antibacterial activity of the extracts was determined against both Gram-positive (Micrococcus and Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Vibrio cholerae, Salmonella typhimurium and Salmonella paratyphi) by disc diffusion assay and their zone of inhibitions (ZOI) were measured. Moreover, their minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) were determined by tube dilution method. Chloroformic bark and stem extracts showed strong inhibition to growth of P. aeruginosa (ZOI = 19 mm and MIC = 150 μg/ml) and S. aureus (ZOI = 19.5 mm and MIC = 250 μg/ml), respectively. All six extracts were subjected to brine shrimp lethality bioassay for possible measure of cytotoxicity. Concentration dependent increment in percentage mortality of brine Shrimp nauplii produced by the extracts indicated the presence of cytotoxic principles in these extractives. Therefore, Xylocarpus mekongensis showed antioxidant, antibacterial and cytotoxic activities.

In Bangladesh, Fish is a major source of daily protein intake of millions of people but most of the fishes are consumed here as fresh fish which is highly susceptible to damage during transportation and marketing. Therefore, an innovative approach was undertaken to process the fish to avoid damage and extend shelf-life while preserving the nutritional qualities to facilitate the more efficient use of fish as a source of protein and other essential nutrients. This study was conducted to develop some dried protein-enriched fish powders from some commonly consumed fish species in Bangladesh and the nutritional, sensorial, and safety qualities were assessed. Five indigenous abundant fish species including small indigenous fish (SIS) and carp fishes namely Awaous grammepomus, Channa punctata, Puntius puntio, Hypophthalmichthys molitrix and Labeo rohita were used for the preparation of dried protein-enriched fish powders. Biochemical, trace elements, sensorial, total viable count (TVC), pH, peroxide value, and moisture reconstitution during 90 days storage period were performed by standard analytical methods. The moisture, protein, fat, ash, carbohydrate (including fiber), and energy contents were ranged from (6.84% to 8.85%), (70.80% to 75.80%), (5.85% to 8.04%), (7.66% to 9.19%), (3.14% to 6.01%) and (367.50% to 379.61% kcal)/100g respectively. Highest content of protein was found in A. grammepomus (75.80%) samples and the lowest in H. molitrix (70.80%) samples. Maximum calcium content was found in sample L. rohita (2.54 g/kg) and minimum in C. punctate as (2.43 g/kg). Maximum iron content was found in H. molitrix (0.15 g/kg) and minimum in A. grammepomus. As for the phosphorous content the L. rohita samples contained the highest (1.4 g/kg) and the lowest in C. punctate (0.73 g/kg) samples. The pH, peroxide value (mEq of O2/kg of fat), and moisture reconstitution (g/100g) during 90 days were ranged from (5.30 to 8.17), (8.60 to 16.77), and (6.84 to 13.83) respectively.

Antimicrobial Activity of Jambul (<i>Syzygium cumini</i>) Fruit Extract on Enteric Pathogenic Bacteria

Jambul (Syzygium cumini) contain several biological activities including anti diabetic, anti-inflammatory, gastroprotective and antibacterial activity. In this study, we investigated antibacterial activity of Jambul juice extract against some common enteric pathogens like Salmonella typhimurium, Shigella flexneri, Staphylococcus aureus, and ETEC (Entero toxigenic E. coli). Growth inhibition of these entero pathogenic bacteria was measured by growing in Nutrient Broth media supplemented with 0%, 5%, 10% and 25% juice extract and then plating on Nutrient Agar plate for colony count at 0, 24 and 48 hours time points. The effect of Jambul juice on the growth of Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus bulgaricus were also investigated. We observed that the growth of Salmonella typhimurium, Shigella flexneri, Staphylococcus aureus, and ETEC were significantly inhibited by Jambul juice by 1 to 6 logs (p Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus bulgaricus) were not affected significantly. These findings indicate that Jambul juice have selective bactericidal effects against several enteric pathogens while beneficial species remain unaffected. To far our knowledge, this is the first report about the antibacterial activity of fruit juice in Bangladesh.
