Mapping quantitative trait loci associated with starch paste viscosity attributes by using double haploid populations of rice (Oryza sativa L.)

The paste viscosity attributes of starch,measured by rapid visco analyzer(RVA),are important factors for the evaluation of the cooking and eating qualities of rice in breeding *** determine the genetic roots of the paste viscosity attributes of rice grains,quantitative trait loci(QTLs)associated with the paste viscosity attributes were mapped,using a double haploid(DH)population derived from Zhongjiazao 17(YK17),a super rice variety,crossed with D50,a tropic japonica ***-four QTLs,for seven parameters of the RVA profiles,were identified in three planting *** 54 QTLs were located on all of the 12 chromosomes,with a single QTL explaining 5.99 to 47.11%of phenotypic *** the QTLs identified,four were repeatedly detected under three environmental conditions and the other four QTLs were repeated under two *** of the QTLs detected for peak viscosity(PKV),trough viscosity(TV),cool paste viscosity(CPV),breakdown viscosity(BDV),setback viscosity(SBV),and peak time(PeT)were located in the interval of RM 6775-RM 3805 under all three environmental conditions,with the exception of pasting temperature(PaT).For digenic interactions,eight QTLs with six traits were identified for additivexenvironment interactions in all three planting *** epistatic interactions were estimated only for PKV,SBV and *** present study will facilitate further understanding of the genetic architecture of eating and cooking quality(ECQ)in the rice quality improvement program.

Gunshot injury to spine:An institutional experience of management and complications from a developing country

Predictability of Surgical Apgar Score for postoperative outcomes in hip fractures: A prospective observational study

Role of Polyamines in Ozone Exposed Ischemic-Reperfused Hearts

The effect of chronic ozone exposure to ischemia reperfusion (I/R) injury in isolated perfused rat hearts was previously demonstrated. The present study tested our hypothesis that chronic ozone exposure led to attenuation of polyamines in the heart, which may limit sensitivity to I/R. Sprague Dawley rats were continuously exposed for 8 hrs/day for 28 days to filtered air or 0.8 ppm ozone. Isolated hearts were previously subjected to 0.5 hour of global ischemia followed by 1 hour of reperfusion after which global polyamine content was examined between the two groups. Spermidine production was significantly increased in the experimental group compared to control group (of I/R hearts). These results suggest that ozone-induced sensitivity to chronic I/R injury activates myocardial polyamine stress response characterized by increased enzymatic activities and accumulation of spermidine. Collectively, these results suggest that I/R possibly disturbs polyamine metabolism, and increased oxidative stress and concomitant reduced myocardial cell viability.

Systematic review of oncological outcomes following laparoscopic vs open total mesorectal excision

AIM: To systematically analyze the randomized trials comparing the oncological and clinical effectiveness of laparoscopic total mesorectal excision(LTME) vs open total mesorectal excision(OTME) in the management of rectal ***: Published randomized, controlled trials comparing the oncological and clinical effectiveness of LTME vs OTME in the management of rectal cancer were retrieved from the standard electronic medical databases. The data of included randomized, controlled trials was extracted and then analyzed according to the principles of meta-analysis using RevMan? statistical software. The combined outcome of the binary variables was expressed as odds ratio(OR) and the combined outcome of the continuous variables waspresented in the form of standardized mean difference(SMD). RESULTS: Data from eleven randomized, controlled trials on 2143 patients were retrieved from the electronic databases. There was a trend towards the higher risk of surgical site infection(OR = 0.66; 95%CI: 0.44-1.00; z = 1.94; P < 0.05), higher risk of incomplete total mesorectal resection(OR = 0.62; 95%CI: 0.43-0.91; z = 2.49; P < 0.01) and prolonged length of hospital stay(SMD,-1.59; 95%CI:-0.86--0.25; z = 4.22; P < 0.00001) following OTME. However, the oncological outcomes like number of harvested lymph nodes, tumour recurrence and risk of positive resection margins were statistically similar in both groups. In addition, the clinical outcomes such as operative complications, anastomotic leak and all-cause mortality were comparable between both approaches of mesorectal ***: LTME appears to have clinically and oncologically measurable advantages over OTME in patients with primary rectal cancer in both short term and long term follow ups.

Risk Factors Associated with Birth Asphyxia in Rural District Matiari, Pakistan: A Case Control Study

Background: During the past two decades there has been a sustained decline in child mortality;however, neonatal mortality has remained stagnant. Each year approximately 4 million babies are born asphyxiated resulting in 2 million neonatal deaths and intrapartum stillbirths. Almost all neonatal deaths occur in developing countries, where the majority is delivered at homes with negligible antenatal care and poor perinatal services. Objectives: To identify socio-demographic and clinical risk factors associated with birth asphyxia in Matiari District of Sindh Province, Pakistan. Method: A matched case control study was conducted in Matiari District with 246 cases and 492 controls. Newborn deaths with birth asphyxia diagnosed through verbal autopsy accreditation during 2005 and 2006 were taken as cases. Controls were the live births during the same period, matched on area of residence, gender and age. Result: The factors found to be associated with birth asphyxia mortality in Matiari District of Sindh Province, Pakistan are maternal education, history of stillbirths, pregnancy complications (including smelly or excessive vaginal discharge and anemia), intrapartum complications (including fever, prolong or difficult labour, breech delivery, cord around child’s neck, premature delivery, large baby size) and failure to establish spontaneous respiration after birth. Conclusion and Recommendation: There is an immediate need to develop strategies for early identification and management of factors associated with birth asphyxia by involving women, families, communities, community health workers, health professionals and policy makers. Community health workers should be trained for emergency obstetric care, basic newborn care including preliminary resuscitation measures to provide skilled birth attendance and encourage early recognition and referral.

An Improved High Performance Liquid Chromatographic Method for Identification and Quantization of Polyamines as Benzoylated Derivatives

A simple reversed phase HPLC method was developed for the determination of Putrescine, Cadaverine and Spermidine (a class of polyamines) in their benzoylated form from external known standards. In the optimization procedure, a number of parameters were examined: 1) Solvent used in the extraction of standard polyamines (diethyl ether versus chloroform);2) Solvent used in the elution of the polyamine (methanol versus acetonitrile);3) Mode of derivatization and extraction step(s) (derivatization and extraction performed together versus derivatization and extraction performed separately);and 4) Other instrumental parameters (such as UV detection wavelength, gradient profiles). The advantages of our method, relative to the standard Morgan method are: a) decreased chromatographic runtime, b) ease of preparation with good resolution, sensitivity, and reproducibility using a standard RP-HPLC method.

Effect of proximal femur nail anti-rotation on unstable intertrochanteric fractures: A prospective observational study

Objective:To assess the effect of proximal femur nail anti-rotation on the functional and radiological outcome of unstable intertrochanteric ***:This prospective observational study was conducted in the orthopedic department of a tertiary care *** 86 patients with unstable intertrochanteric fractures treated with proximal femur nail anti-rotation between January 2010 and January 2015 were *** were followed in the outpatient clinic at regular intervals after discharge to assess the radiological union of fractures and *** functional outcomes were evaluated after 2 years by Harris hip ***:All patients achieved a radiological union of fractures after a mean duration of 24.6 *** follow up showed 23 complications(systemic and local).Eight patients developed urinary tract infections,and three patients developed chest infections,two patients had screw cut-out,one patient had knee stiffness,one patient developed superficial surgical site infection,and four patients developed varus collapse and shortening *** two year follow up showed that 69(80.2%)patients had an excellent and good functional outcome according to Harris hip ***:With lower complication rates,proximal femur nail is a valid and reasonable option especially in treating unstable intertrochanteric fractures.

Genetic variability for yield and fiber related traits in genetically modified cotton
