Knowledge, attitude and practice of breast self examination and breast cancer among female medical students in Taif, Saudi Arabia

Introduction and Research.Problem: Breast cancer is th. most common of all female cancers in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Different studies conducted in th. Kingdom h.ve sh.wn th.t knowledge of females regarding breast cancer is poor. Aim of th. study was to determine knowledge, attitude and practice among students of Saudi female medical university towards Breast Self Examination (BSE) and also to explore th.ir knowledge about breast cancer. Research.Meth.dology: An observational cross-sectional study was conducted at Faculty of Medicine, Taif University during October 2013. Sample size was 378 with.mean age of 19.9 ± 1.5. A self administrated questionnaire was used to obtain data about knowledge, attitude and practice towards BSE and knowledge about breast cancer. Data were collected and fed to SPSS version 16. Sh.pe of distribution for numerical data was tested by using one sample Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. Ch.-Square Test & Fissure Exact Test (FET) were used for testing relation between categorical variables wh.le correlation analysis was used to test th. strength.of relation between numeric variables. Main Results: Th. study revealed th.t only 8.2% of participants h.d good overall knowledge about breast cancer and BSE. Alth.ugh.66% of th. study sample h.d positive attitude towards BSE, only 17% reported th.t th.y practiced BSE month.y. A significant positive moderate correlation was found between overall knowledge score and attitude towards BSE (r = 0.449 & p = 0.000). Th. same was for th. frequency of BSE practice but it was found to be in a weak magnitude (r = 0.223 & p = 0.000). Conclusion and Recommendations: Alth.ugh.th.re was lack of knowledge about breast cancer and BSE yet, positive attitude towards BSE was encouraging. Most female medical students in our sample did not perform BSE or perform it irregularly. Th. effects of cold atmosph.ric-pressure plasma jet (CAPPJ) were investigated on germination and early seedling growth.of fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum L) seeds. A two-electrode argon CAPPJ system with.and with.ut an additional grounded electrode [accelerating grounded (AG) electrode] was used at different exposure times. After 16 h.of observation, th. germination rates increased by 4 and 7 times, with.ut and with.using an AG electrode, respectively, for 1 min of plasma exposure. An increase in sh.ot fresh.weigh. was observed, especially at 10 min exposure time. A h.gh.dry weigh. of root and sh.ot at 1 min-AG exposure time was observed. Th. root:sh.ot ratio was lower in plasma-treated seedlings, compared with.th. control plants. Th. study found th.t th. O-radical emission line (777.4 nm) enh.nced 5 times, due to th. presence of an AG electrode, wh.ch.increased th. axial electric field and led to th. formation of more streamers. Th. th.ee stated effects (O-radicals, enh.ncement of th. electric field and streamers) could be th. cause for th. stimulation of seed germination and seedling growth.parameters wh.n using th. CAPPJ. Th. scanning electron microscope images sh.wed th. etch.ng of th. seed surface layers, wh.ch.was more pronounced wh.n an AG electrode was applied. Th. results of th. current study indicate th.t th. germination rates increased due to th. increase of O-radical concentration and th. etch.ng of th. seed surfaces.

Th.s work reports synth.sis and ch.racterization of h.terocyclic functionalized polymers, poly（triazole-eth.rimidazole）s（PTAEI）, from a dialkyne-terminated compound, 3-（4,5-bis（4-（propargyloxy）ph.nyl）-1h.imidazol-2-yl）-9-eth.l-9h.carbazole, by using click reaction. PTAEIs were ch.racterized and th.ir properties such.as solubility, th.rmal, mech.nical, ph.toph.sical and metal ions adsorption were investigated. Th.se polymers h.d weigh. average molar masses（Mw） in th. range of 19100-26700 g/mol, exh.bited excellent solubility in polar aprotic solvents and formed low-colored flexible th.n films by solution casting meth.d. Th.y exh.bited good th.rmal stability with.glass transition temperatures（Tg） between 160 °C and 211 °C and 10% weigh. loss temperatures（T10%） in th. range of 308-426 °C. Nanocomposites of PTAEIs with.epoxide-terminated Fe3O4 sh.wed th.t strong interfacial interaction between inorganic particles and th. polymer matrix contributed to th. enh.nced th.rmal and mech.nical properties. Th. ph.toluminescence intensity of th. PTAEIs increased and th. spectra red sh.fted with.increasing Fe3O4 content. Th. PTAEIs and nanocomposites were tested for th.ir extraction capability of metal ions from aqueous solutions eith.r individually or in th. mixture.

Synth.sis and ch.racterization of lith.um niobium borate glasses containing neodymium

A series of（90–x）Li2B4O7-10Nb2O5-xNd2O3 glass samples（x=0, 5 mol.%, 10 mol.%, 15 mol.%, 20 mol.% and 25 mol.%） were synth.sized using melt quench.ng tech.ique. X-ray diffraction（XRD）, differential th.rmal analyzer（DTA）, Fourier transformed infrared（FTIR）, ultraviolet-visible-near-infrared（UV-Vis-NIR） spectrometer and ph.toluminescence（PL） spectroscopic ch.racterizations were made to examine th. influence of Nd3＋ concentration on th. ph.sical, structural and optical properties. Various ph.sical properties such.as glasses density, molar volume, th.rmal stability, ion concentration, polar on radius, inter-nuclear distance, field strength. cut-off wavelength. energy band gap and Urbach.energy were calculated. Th. samples were amorph.us in nature and confirmed from XRD pattern. Th. FTIR spectra revealed th. presence of BO3 and BO4 functional groups. UV-Vis-NIR spectra exh.bited nine prominent bands centered at 353, 430, 475, 524, 583, 681, 745, 803, 875 nm corresponding to th. transitions from th. ground state to ^4D（3/2）, ^2P（1/2）, ^2G（9/2）, ^4G（7/2）, ^4G（5/2）, ^4F（9/2）, ^4F（7/2）, ^4F（5/2）, ^4F（3/2） excited states, respectively. Moreover, th. emission spectra at 355 nm excitation displayed th.ee peaks centered at 903 nm（^4F（3/2）→^4I（9/2））, 1059 nm（^4F（3/2）→^4I（11/2）） and 1333 nm（^4F（3/2）→^4I（13/2））, respectively. Fluorescence lifetime was recorded between 53.69 to 28.43 μs. It was found th.t varying concentration of Nd^（3＋） ions strongly affected th. ph.sical, structural and optical properties of th. glass samples.

Evaluating organic acids as alternative leach.ng reagents for rare earth.elements recovery from NdFeB magnets

Th.s study proposes an advanced leach.ng meth.d using organic acids to recover rare earth.elements(REEs)from NdFeB permanent magnets from end-of-life computers h.rd disk drives(h.Ds).Th. end-oflife h.Ds were first dismantled in order to recover NdFeB magnets,wh.ch.were th.n th.rmally demagnetized at 350℃during 30 min before crush.ng in a ball mill under inert *** electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(SEM/EDS)analyses performed on th. NdFeB magnets sh.w th. h.terogeneous structure containing th. major matric ph.se Nd_(2)Fe_(14)B and th. REEs-organic acids *** influence of th. organic acid type(acetic acid,formic acid,citric acid and tartaric acid),th. acid concentration(10 vol%,up to saturation),and th. solid/liquid(S/L)ratio(0.5%-10%)on NdFeB magnets leach.ng was investigated employing an optimal experimental design conceived by th. statistical software *** acid(Ch.(3)COOh.sh.ws th. h.gh.st leach.ng performance of REEs,allowing leach.ng yields over 90%for Nd,Dy and Pr in th. acid concentration range of 1.6-10 mol/L and th. Deep oxidative desulfurization of gas oil based on sandwich.type polysilicotungstate supported β-cyclodextrin composite as an efficient h.terogeneous catalyst

In th.s work,in order to obtain deep clean gas oil,a novel organic–inorganic h.brid(n-C4h.)4N)7h.Si2W18Cd4O68@β-cyclodextrin(abbreviated as TBA-Si WCd@β-CD)composite was synth.sized by supporting quaternary ammonium salt of sandwich.type polysilicotungstate onβ-cyclodextrin(TBA-SiWCd@β-CD)as an efficient catalyst for oxidative desulfurization(ODS)of gas *** successful composition of th. materials explained by th. formation of h.st–guest inclusion complex,wh.ch.confirmed th.ough.FTIR,UV–vis,XRD,SEM,and EDX ch.racterization *** results revealed th.t th. levels of sulfur content and mercaptan compounds of gas oil lowered with.97%removal *** with.th. ODS treatment of gas oil,th. TBA-Si WCd@β-CD composite sh.wed an outstanding catalytic performance for th. oxidation of dibenzoth.oph.ne(DBT)in th. prepared model *** main factors th.t influence th. desulfurization efficiency and th. kinetic study of th. ODS process were *** prepared h.terogeneous catalyst was found to give remarkable reusability for five runs with.ut a discernible decrease in its *** study suggested th. potential application of th. TBA-Si WCd@β-CD catalyst for removal of h.zardous sulfur compounds from gas oil fuel.

On th. improvement of signal repeatability in laser-induced air plasmas

Th. relatively low repeatability of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy （LIBS） severely h.nders its wide commercialization. In th. present work, we investigate th. optimization of LIBS system for repeatability improvement for both.signal generation （plasma evolution） and signal collection. Time- integrated spectra and images were obtained under different laser energies and focal length. to inves- tigate th. optimum configuration for stable plasmas and repeatable signals. Using our experimental setup, th. optimum conditions were found to be a laser energy of 250 mJ and a focus length.of 100 ram. A stable and h.mogeneous plasma with.th. largest h.t core area in th. optimum condition yielded th. most stable LIBS signal. Time-resolved images sh.wed th.t th. rebounding processes th.ough.th. air plasma evolution caused th. relative standard deviation （RSD） to increase with.laser energies of 〉 250 mJ. In addition, th. emission collection was improved by using a concave sph.rical mirror. Th. line intensities doubled as th.ir RSDs decreased by approximately 25%. Wh.n th. signal generation and collection were optimized simultaneously, th. pulse-to-pulse RSDs were reduced to approximately 3% for O（I）, N（I）, and h.I） lines, wh.ch.are better th.n th. RSDs reported for solid samples and sh.wed great potential for LIBS quantitative analysis by gasifying th. solid or liquid samples.

Design, synth.sis, and nanoengineered modification of sph.rical graph.ne surface by layered double h.droxide (LDh. for removal of As (Ⅲ) from aqueous solutions

In th.s study, new nano sph.rical graph.ne modified with.LDh.Layered Double h.droxide) was prepared and used to remove As(Ⅲ) ion from aqueous solutions. At first, graph.ne oxide was synth.sized from graph.te using a well-known h.mmer meth.d. Th. obtained graph.ne oxide solution was sprayed in octanol solution under different temperatures and sprayed speed as influenced variables. Th. structure and ph.sical ch.racterization of synth.sized sph.rical graph.ne oxide were determined by various tech.iques,including FT-IR, N_(2) adsorption–desorption, SEM, TEM, and EDX. In th. next step, th. h.droth.rmal meth.d was applied to deposition LDh.on th. sph.rical graph.ne oxide. Th. synth.sized sph.rical graph.ne modified by LDh.was used to remove As(Ⅲ) as a toxic h.avy metal ion. Th. effect of influenced variables including p h. contact time, amount of sorbent, and type eluent studied and th. optimum values were as 8, 30, 50, and h.l(0.5 mol·L^(-1)), respectively. After optimization, th. studied sorbent was sh.wn a h.gh.adsorption capacity(149.3 mg·g^(-1)). Th. adsorption mech.nism and kinetic models exh.bited good agreement with.th. Langmuir isoth.rm and pseudo-second-order trends, respectively. Besides, th. synth.sized product was tested for seven times with.ut significant loss in its sorption efficiency.

Ph.sph.te Solubilization by <i>Bacillus subtilis</i>and <i>Serratia marcescens</i>Isolated from Tomato Plant Rh.zosph.re

Plants need ph.sph.rus for many ph.siological activities in a form of ph.sph.te anions. Th.ee different bacterial strains (Bacillus subtilis Ph. Serratia marcescens Ph., and Serratia marcescens Ph.), recently isolated from tomato plant rh.zosph.re, h.ve h.gh.ph.sph.te solubilization index (SI from 2.8 to 3.2) on Pikovskaya agar medium (wh.ch.contains calcium ph.sph.te). Moreover, ph.sph.te release from calcium in Pikovskaya broth.over 5 days is increasing with.cell growth.for th. different isolates. Th. most efficient ph.sph.te solubilization case is th. mixed culture of th. 3 strains (OD475 is almost 1). On th. oth.r h.nd, ph.values decreased dramatically with.time due to organic acids secretion and th. maximum acidification level is recoded for Serratia marcescens Ph. (ph.= 1.94). Interestingly, th. isolates are resistance to important pesticides (oxamyl, th.oph.nate meth.l, and captan) th.t are commonly used in th. sampling area. Th.s resistance is very favorable and increases th. persistence of th. ph.sph.te solubilizing bacteria in contaminated soils. Th. isolates are th.refore plant symbionts and growth.promoting agents.
