Gluten sensitive enteropathy in patients with iron deficiency anemia of unknown origin

AIM: To determine the prevalence of gluten sensitive enteropathy (GSE) in a large group of patients with iron deficiency anemia (IDA) of obscure origin. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, patients with IDA of obscure origin were screened for GSE. Anti- endomysial antibody (EMA) and tissue transglutamin- ase antibody (tTG) levels were evaluated and duodenal biopsies were taken and scored according to the Marsh classification. The diagnosis of GSE was based on a positive serological test and abnormal duodenal histol- ogy. Gluten free diet (GFD) was advised for all the GSE patients. RESULTS: Of the 4120 IDA patients referred to our Hematology departments, 206 (95 male) patients were found to have IDA of obscure origin. Thirty out of 206 patients (14.6%) had GSE. The mean age of GSE pa- tients was 34.6 ± 17.03 (range 10-72 years). The female to male ratio was 1.3:1. Sixteen patients had Marsh 3,12 had Marsh 2, and 2 had Marsh 1 lesions. The sever- ity of anemia was in parallel with the severity of duode- nal lesions. Twenty-two GSE patients (73.3%) had no gastrointestinal symptoms. Fourteen GSE patients who adhered to GFD without receiving iron supplementation agreed to undergo follow up visits. After 6 mo of GFD, their mean hemoglobin levels (Hb) increased from 9.9 ± 1.6 to 12.8 ± 1.0 g/dL (P al biopsy, mean Hb increased from 11.0 ± 1.1 to 13.1 ± 1.0 g/dL (P alence (e.g. 14.6%) of GSE in patients with IDA of obscure origin. Gluten free diet can improve anemia in GSE patients who have mild duodenal lesions without villous atrophy.

Emerging targets for glioblastoma stem cell therapy

Glioblastoma multiforme（GBM）,designated as World Health Organization（WHO）grade IV astrocytoma,is a lethal and therapy-resistant brain cancer comprised of several tumor cell subpopulations,including GBM stem cells（GSCs）which are believed to contribute to tumor recurrence following initial response to *** evidence demonstrates that GBM tumors are initiated from *** development and use of novel therapies including small molecule inhibitors of specific proteins in signaling pathways that regulate sternness,proliferation and migration of GSCs,immunotherapy,and non-coding microRNAs may provide better means of treating *** and characterization of GSC-specific signaling pathways would be necessary to identify specific therapeutic targets which may lead to the development of more efficient therapies selectively targeting *** signaling pathways including mTOR,AKT,maternal embryonic leucine zipper kinase（MELK）,NOTCH1 and Wnt/β-catenin as well as expression of cancer stem cell markers CD133,CD44,Oct4,Sox2,Nanog,and alDHlA1 maintain GSC ***,the data published in the Cancer Genome Atlas（TCGA）specifically demonstrated the activated PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway in GBM *** such pathways may help to understand GSC biology and lead to the development of potential therapeutic interventions to render them more sensitive to chemotherapy and radiation ***,recent demonstration of dedifferentiation of GBM cell lines into CSC-like cells prove that any successful therapeutic agent or combination of drugs for GBM therapy must eliminate not only GSCs,but the differentiated GBM cells and the entire bulk of tumor cells.

Static Analysis and Code Complexity Metrics as Early Indicators of Software Defects

Software is an important part of automotive product development, and it is commonly known that software quality assurance consumes considerable effort in safety-critical embedded software development. Increasing the effectiveness and efficiency of this effort thus becomes more and more important. Identifying problematic code areas which are most likely to fail and therefore require most of the quality assurance attention is required. This article presents an exploratory study investigating whether the faults detected by static analysis tools combined with code complexity metrics can be used as software quality indicators and to build pre-release fault prediction models. The combination of code complexity metrics with static analysis fault density was used to predict the pre-release fault density with an accuracy of 78.3%. This combination was also used to separate high and low quality components with a classification accuracy of 79%.

In the current study,we examined the effects of beef processing to produce pastirma on the physicochemical properties of proteins in ***(SEM)*** concentrations significantly increased in pastirma muscles(Palting and curing *** surface hydrophobicity values of processed samples were higher than those without processing at all guanidine-HCl concentrations,suggesting hydrophobicity increased,which may attribute to the new generated peptides during the traditional pastirma-making *** metmyoglobin content greatly increased(by as much as 89%)in pastirma samples compared with the unprocessed *** images of histology also demonstrate that the pastirma processing had no negative impact on the structure of the *** results from this study suggest that the traditional pastirma-making process catalyzed the enzymatic digestion of muscle proteins,and the differences in some physicochemical parameters between the control and pastirma samples were thus likely to be contributable to protein ***,the traditional pastirma-making process results in the degradation of many proteins into peptides,which might then be obtainable as functional components to treat human dietand lifestyle-related diseases such as hypertension,hyperglycemia syndromes or to be used as nutraceuticals.©2013 Beijing Academy of Food *** and hosting by Elsevier *** rights reserved.

Pollution represents an important threat to human health. Waste pollution with its adverse health risks, mainly cancer incidences, is one of the main issues present in Lebanon. Random disposal of wastes is instilling a complex and challenging situation that is affecting the entire population. Here, a comprehensive study is presented along with collected data addressing the correlation between long-term exposure to the different forms of pollution and the chances of being affected with cancer. Lebanon, a country currently facing an extensive garbage crisis, is undergoing alarming surges in pollution rates. Inevitably, these environmental factors become chief elements in influencing disease statistics. It is therefore of urgent importance to seek all solutions possible while raising awareness in order to reduce life threatening risks.

Reducing the Levels of Sodium, Saturated Animal Fat, and Nitrite in Dry-Cured Pork Meat Products: A Major Challenge

The curing of meat is a conservation technique widely used since ancient times to prolong shelf-life. It consists in exposing meat to a mixture of sodium chloride and nitrate/nitrite. Sodium chloride affects the flavor, texture and shelf-life of meat products. Animal fat mainly affects the flavor and texture, and nitrate and nitrite affect the color and flavor, and give cured meat products their typical aroma. Excessive intake of sodium has been linked to arterial hypertension and increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. Excessive intakes of saturated fatty acids in pork fat, and also of nitrite, have been identified as factors promoting some cancers. There is consequently an increasing consumer demand to reduce these ingredients in processed meat and so develop healthier cured meat products. This paper reviews how and to what extent sodium, animal fat rich in saturated fatty acids, and nitrite contents can be reduced in the production of dry-cured hams and dry-fermented sausages.

Implementation of GIS and Geographic RDBMS Prototype for Water Resources Management. Zeuss-Koutine Basin (South of Tunisia)

The scarcity of shallow water, which is a delicate matter in southern Tunisia, is relatively compensated by groundwater resources. Indeed, the South contains 25% of water reserves of the country whom 10% are superficial water. The different hydrogeological studies show that the Zeuss-Koutine region is composed of several aquifer systems, which may be subdivided into two distinct levels;a superficial and a deep one. Such water resources show signs of localized over- exploitation which has a serious effect on the change of the hydrosystem characteristics in this region. Recently, Tunisia proves to be very interested in the contribution of new technology in particular Geographic Information System (GIS) to resolve the problem of water resources deficit in Tunisia essentially in semiarid southern part, in addition to the increased exploitation of groundwater resources, not renewable basically in last years. Hence, preserving water resources in the short and long term is a must. This fact might be achieved by the geographical information system (GIS). To respond to this object, detailed hydrological and hydrogeological studies are efficient, and a Geographic Relational Data Base Management System (RDBMS) by MERISE model was created in this study for organization of all these data in a structured way (method) and was easily exploitable under it. In addition, a lithostratigraphic correlation by the GIS is very important for understanding of the aquifer geometry and hydrodynamic interactions. The correlation among multi data shows a high degradation increasing from the South to the North (both quality and quantity of the Zeuss-Koutine groundwater). That is why another study of the water quality (salinity) and exploitation is considered crucial.
