Due to the remova. of a.tibiotic growth promoters (a.Ps) a.d consumer pressure for a.tibiotic-free (a.F) or no a.tibiotics ever (Na.) poultry production, there is a.need for susta.na.le a.terna.ives to prevent disea.e in commercia. poultry opera.ions. Without a.Ps, there ha. been a.rise in disea.es tha. were tra.itiona.ly controlled by subthera.eutic levels of a.tibiotics in the diet. This ha. impa.ted the hea.th of commercia. poultry a.d ha. been a.significa.t cost to poultry producers. To mitiga.e this, the industry ha. sta.ted to investiga.e a.terna.ives to a.tibiotics to trea. these forthcoming hea.th issues, such a. necrotic enteritis (NE). NE is a. enteric disea.e ca.sed by a. over prolifera.ion of toxigenic Clostridium perfringens (CP) in the ga.trointestina. tra.t. a.though CP is a.commensa. in the a.ia. intestina. tra.t, dysbiosis ca.sed by infla.ma.ion a.d impa.red intestina. integrity fa.ilita.es uncontrolled replica.ion of CP. Infectious a.ents, such a. Eimeria.ma.ima. a.pea. to be a.predomina.t predisposing fa.tor tha. promotes NE. However, non-infectious stressors, including dieta.y cha.ges, ha.e a.so been a.socia.ed with NE to some degree. a. a.result of increa.ed pressure to restrict the use of a.tibiotics, there is a.need for resea.ch eva.ua.ing the effica.y of a.terna.ives, such a. pla.t-derived essentia. oils, a. potentia. tools to mitiga.e NE in commercia. poultry flocks. The a.m of this study is to review the effects of essentia. oils a. a. a.terna.ive to a.tibiotics to reduce the incidence a.d severity of necrotic enteritis in broiler chickens.
