N-doped mesoporous alumina for adsorption of carbon dioxide

N-doped mesoporous alumina has been synthesized using chitosan as the biopolymer template. The adsorbent has been thoroughly investigated for the adsorption of CO2 from a simulated flue gas stream （15% CO2 balanced with N2） and compared with commercially available mesoporous alumina procured from SASOL, Germany. CO2 adsorption was studied under different conditions of pre- treatment and adsorption temperature, inlet CO2 concentration and in the presence of oxygen and moisture. The adsorption capacity was determined to be 29.4 nag CO2/g of adsorbent at 55℃. This value was observed to be 4 times higher in comparison to that of commercial mesoporous alumina at a temperature of 55℃. Basicity of alumina surface coupled with the presence of nitrogen in template in synthesized sample is responsible for this enhanced CO2 adsorption. Adsorption capacity for CO2 was retained in the presence of oxygen; however moisture had a deteriorating effect on the adsorption capacity reducing it to nearly half the value.

OBJECTIVE： Propolis, a resinous material collected by honey bees from various plants, has been explored globally for its medicinal and nutritional properties. However, research over Indian propolis is at infancy. This study was designed to investigate nutraceutical potential of Indian propolis. METHODS： In the present study, propolis extract was standardized with respect to markers caffeic acid phenethyl ester, caffeic acid, galangin, luteolin, curcumin, apigenin, pinocembrin and quercetin by new high-performance thin-layer chromatographic （HPTLC） methods. The physico-chemical analysis, residues analysis and in vitro antioxidant activity analysis were performed. Nutraceutical value was examined in terms of fats, fibers, minerals, proteins, polysaccharides, total carbohydrates, and energy value. RESULTS： The developed HPTLC methods were found to be simple, reliable accurate, and the validation parameters were within the limits of the International Council for Harmonization of Technical Requirements for Pharmaceuticals for Human Use guidelines. Macerated ethanolic extract of propolis （MEEP） was found to have polyphenolic content of （20.99 ＋ 0.24） mg/g and flavonoids content of （8.39 ＋ 0.04） mg/g. MEEP was found to comprise of （283.33 ＋ 51.31） g/kg fats, （30.07 ＋ 7.30） g/kg fibers, （102.56 ＋ 2.84） g/kg proteins and （389.36 ＋ 57.50） g/kg carbohydrate with a calorie value of （38 409.33 ＋ 6 169.80） kJ/kg. It was found that Indian propolis exhibited high nutraceutical value and showed absence of pesticides and heavy metals. The MEEP showed in vitro antioxidant activity with inhibitory concentration of （12.24 ＋ 4.64） pg/mL. CONCLUSION： The present work explores Indian propolis as a potential nutritious candidate. The proposed analytical methods can be applied in future screening of the quality of Indian propolis.

Risk of Tropical Cyclones and Floods to Power Grids in Southeast and East Asia

Power grids play a critical role in modern society, serving as the lifeline of a well-functioning economy. This article presents a first large-scale study on the risk estimation of tropical cyclone(TC)-induced winds and coastal floods, which can widely impact power grids in Southeast and East Asia. Our comprehensive risk model incorporates detailed infrastructure data from OpenStreetMap(OSM) and government power grid maps, along with global hazard maps and vulnerability curves. The results reveal that the estimated expected annual damages from TCs and coastal floods to OSM-mapped assets account for approximately 0.07%(0.00–0.38%) and 0.02%(0.00–0.02%) of the total GDP of the study area, respectively. We analyzed the main sources of uncertainty in the risk model and emphasized the importance of understanding asset *** results highlight the urgent need to strengthen power infrastructure to withstand the impacts of natural hazards, and the significance of reliable risk information for improving power grid design and planning. Focusing on developing more region-specific infrastructure data and vulnerability curves will improve the accuracy of risk estimation and provide valuable insights not only for the electricity sector but also for customers of other infrastructure systems that heavily rely on a stable supply of electricity.

Role of angiogenesis in oral squamous cell carcinoma development and metastasis: an immunohistochemical study

Although a few studies have shown that vascularity is increased from normal mucosa to dysplasia to carcinoma suggesting that disease progression in the oral mucosa is accompanied by angiogenesis. The role in lymph node metastasis in oral squamous cell carcinoma （OSCC） is equivocal. Role of angiogenesis in OSCC development and metastasis is evaluated in this study. This retrospective study of 50 samples consisted of 9 normal buccal mucosa, 22 leukoplakias, and 19 OSCC. Polyclonal antibodies to von-Willebrand factor were used to highlight the microvessels. Images were captured and morphometric image analysis was done for microvessel density （MVD）, area, and perimeter. Highest, as well as mean values of these three parameters were compared. MVD and perimeter, but not area, are significantly different between normal mucosa and OSCC, and leukoplakia and OSCC. There were no differences between normal mucosa and leukoplakia. MVD, area, and perimeter were not significantly different between the OSCC with and without lymph node metastasis. The highest and mean values of MVD are significantly correlated. In the development of OSCC, angiogenic phenotypic change occurs in carcinomas rather than in the pre-cancerous stage, and quantification of angiogenesis in OSCC does not predict the risk of lymph node metastasis.

Electrochemical biosensor holds great promise in the biomedical area due to its enhanced specificity, sensitivity, label-free nature and cost effectiveness for rapid point-of-care detection of diseases at bedside. In this review, we are focusing on the working principle of electrochemical biosensor and how it can be employed in detecting biomarkers of fatal diseases like cancer, AIDS, hepatitis and cardiovascular diseases. Recent advances in the development of implantable biosensors and exploration of nanomaterials in fabrication of electrodes with increasing the sensitivity of biosensor for quick and easy detection of biomolecules have been elucidated in detail. Electrochemical-based detection of heavy metal ions which cause harmful effect on human health has been discussed. Key challenges associated with the electrochemical sensor and its future perspectives are also addressed.

随着煤气化工业的不断发展,中国正面临着由此带来的一系列环境问题。生物处理是煤气化废水处理的核心处理工艺,其中微生物是污染物去除的主体,但对其认识尚十分有限。因此,本研究以两套试验系统(含有固定载体的AO-MBR系统)为对象,考察其微生物群落特性,以期为煤气化废水的生物处理工艺提供设计和运行的理论支持。分别从两个系统的缺氧、好氧和膜池采集污泥混合液样品,并采用高通量测序方法对其微生物群落特性进行了研究。分类结果表明,系统中变形菌门所占丰度最高,其变形菌纲为优势纲。基于微生物群落多样性指数的数据分析表明1号系统的缺氧池、好氧池和膜池中各样品的群落多样性、均匀性和多度指数无明显差异(P>0.05)。采用不相似性检测方法Adonis,ANOSIM和MRPP的分析结果表明1号系统的缺氧池、好氧池和膜池中微生物群落结构无明显差异(P>0.05)。同时,聚类分析表明,1号系统中相邻反应池中的微生物群落更相近。此外,Mantel test结果表明进水总氮浓度与微生物群落结构呈显著正相关(P<0.05)。移动窗口分析结果表明2号系统膜池(E)中的微生物变化速率(0.83%-7.72%)低于1号系统膜池(D)中的微生物变化速率(0.85%-15.63%)。这是由于2号系统中水力负荷的增幅(从222L/m3.d增长至267L/m3.d)小于1号系统中水力负荷的增幅(从222L/m3.d增长至356L/m3.d)。这一结果可能表明,水力负荷变化越大,微生物变化速率越大。此外,采用幂律方程进行物种-时间关系(TTR)分析的结果表明,两个系统的膜池中的微生物群落均符合幂律关系。1号系统的膜池内微生物群落的时间周转率为0.13(R2=0.99),低于系统2膜池中微生物群落的时间周转率0.20(R2=0.99)。

Hepatic endogenous defense potential of propolis after mercury intoxication

Exposure to mercuric chloride(HgCl2;5 mg kg–1 body weight;i.p.)induced oxidative stress in mice and substantially increased lipid peroxidation(LPO)and oxidized glutathione(GSSG)levels,decreased the level of reduced glu-tathione(GSH)and various antioxidant enzymes in liver and also increased the activities of liver marker enzymes in *** with propolis extract,a resinous wax-like beehive product(200 mg kg–1 orally,after mercury administration),for 3 days inhibited LPO and the formation of GSSG and increased the level of GSH in the *** of serum transaminases,alkaline phosphatase,lactate dehydrogenase and-glutamyl transpeptidase were significantly restored after propolis *** activities of antioxidant enzymes,that is,superoxide dismutase,catalase,glutathione-S-transferase and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase,were also concomitantly restored towards normal levels after propolis *** observations clearly demonstrate that propolis treatment augments antioxidant defense against mercury-induced toxicity and provide evidence that propolis has therapeutic potential as a hepatoprotective agent.

Impact of Plant-Based Antimicrobial Washes on Sensory Properties of Organic Leafy Greens

The objective was to study the sensory attributes of organic leafy greens treated with plant antimicrobials and identify treatments most accepted by panelists. Organic leafy greens were washed with antimicrobials and stored at 4°C for 24 h prior to serving panelists. Antimicrobials evaluated include: 0.1% clove bud, lemongrass, oregano, or cinnamon essential oils;0.1% carvacrol or citral;3% grapeseed, apple, or 10%/7% olive extract;combination of essential oils with extracts;3% hydrogen peroxide;and untreated control. A randomized block design with an affective test was used and 60 panelists were asked to evaluate samples for preference liking based on a 9-point hedonic scale and for sensory attributes based on a 5-point hedonic scale. Changes in texture and color of leafy greens were measured using a Texture analyzer and a Chroma Meter, respectively. On the basis of preference liking, overall acceptability of spinach and lettuce treated with 0.1% cinnamon oil was ranked the highest (7.5 ± 1.4 and 7.1 ± 1.7, moderately liked), respectively. For texture analysis, washing iceberg lettuce with 0.1% oregano oil + 10% olive extract and spinach with 0.1% lemongrass oil + 1% apple extract yielded the highest firmness values of F = 783.1 ± 53.8 Newtons and 939.30 ± 35.2 Newtons, respectively. Based on the International Commission on Illumination CIE LAB color schemes, treatment with 0.1% oregano oil + 10% olive extract had the greatest impact on color of iceberg lettuce with the lowest L value* (44.5 ± 6.2) indicating the darkest color. These results will help identify plant antimicrobials that have the least impact on sensory properties of organic leafy greens and are preferred by consumers.
