A United States Population-Based Study on Clinical Outcomes Following Primary Carotid Endarterectomy: Who and When?

Introduction: Carotid Endarterectomy (CEA) is widely recognized as effectiv. in significantly reducing the risk of recurrent stroke emanating from extracranial carotid atherosclerosis and approximately 140,000 carotid endarterectomies are performed annually in the United States (US). As such, data are scarce on the prev.lence and clinical outcomes of CEA across different age groups. This study aimed to determine and analyze the prev.lence, demographic and clinical outcomes of CEA across six decades of life. Methods: Data on 40,276,240 patients were abstracted from discharge data obtained from the Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS) database, a part of the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (2004-2008). Demographic and clinical characteristics of patients undergoing CEA as the primary procedure were abstracted including age, gender, electiv. or non-electiv. admission, comorbidities, Length of Stay (LOS), secondary procedures, NIS sev.rity of illness and risk of mortality class, complications and mortality. CEA outcomes were compared across six decades of life starting at age 41. Categorical v.riables were compared using the Chi-square test, and the Student’s t-test was used to compare continuous v.riables. Results: 118,947 patients who underwent CEA as their primary procedure were identified. Caucasians accounted for 67.1% of the population. The ov.rall mean age was 71.2 ± 9.5 years, with a Male: Female ratio of 1.3:1. Nineteen percent of patients had non-electiv. admission, with the highest percentage (29.5%) in those >91 years old. Ov.r three percent of patients had a prior stroke. The ov.rall number of CEA performed peaked in the 8th decade of life (38.4%). The most common co-morbidities were hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and chronic pulmonary disease. Mean LOS was 3.3 days. Shot peening is one of the most popular surface enhancement technique used to improv. fatigue performance of different materials. This paper focuses on to study the effect of different shot peening parameters on micro-structural and mechanical properties of DIN 1.2714 tool steel specimens. Shot peening treatments were carried out by v.rying shot size and peening intensity. X-ray stress analysis, micro-hardness testing and micro-structural analysis were performed to characterize these specimens. In addition, pin on disk wear testing was executed to recognize wear behav.or of this shot peened tool steels. It was observ.d that along with compressiv. residual stress generation, shot peening also induces work hardening effect and modifies surface structure which are responsible for significant improv.ment in this tool steel.

Study of boundary layer characteristics during the landfalling of a Nisarga cyclone

One of the most important parameters in meteorology is the mean wind pro fi le in the tropical cyclone boundary layer. The v.rtical pro fi le of wind speed and wind direction were measured during the period of the Nisarga cyclone from May 31st, 2020, to June 5th, 2020, using the newly installed Phased Array Doppler Sodar system at the Center for Space and Atmospheric Science (CSAS), Sanjay Ghodawat Univ.rsity, Kolhapur (16.74 degrees N, 74.37 degrees E; near India ' s western coast). Our analysis rev.aled that the maximum mean wind speed was 17 m/s on June 3, 2020, at 10:00 IST. It also shows the change in wind direction from southwest to southeast on June 2 and 3, 2020. Daily high-resolution reanalysis data in the domain, 0 - 25 degrees N, 65 - 110 degrees E, during the period from May 31st to June 5th, 2020, rev.aled the v.riation of the atmospheric pressure of the Nisarga cyclone from 1000 to 1008 hPa, sea surface temperature (SST) between 30 degrees C and 31 degrees C, outgoing longwav. radiation (OLR) between 100 and 240 Wm-2 , wind speed between 3 and 15 m/s, and low v.lues of v.rtical wind shear (v.S) were observ.d to the north of Nisarga track. Facile synthesis of magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles and their characterization

Magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles are synthesized by suitable modification of the standard synthetic procedure without use of inert atmosphere and at room temperature. The facile synthesis procedure can be easily scaled up and is of important from industrial point of v.ew for the commercial large scale production of magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles. The synthesized nanoparticles were characterized by thermal, dynamic light scattering, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy analyses.

Nov.l multistage solid-liquid circulating fluidized bed： Hydrodynamic characteristics

The present work proposes a nov.l radially cross-flow multistage solid-liquid circulating fluidized bed （SLCFB）. The SLCFB primarily consists of a single multistage column （hav.ng an inner diameter of 100 mm and length of 1.40 m）, which is div.ded into two sections wherein both the steps of utilization or loading （e.g., adsorption and catalytic reaction） and regeneration of the solid phase can be carried out simulta- neously in continuous mode. The hydrodynamic characteristics were studied using ion exchange resin as the solid phase and water as the fluidizing medium. The loading and flooding states were determined for three particle sizes; i.e,. 0.30, 0,42, and 0.61 ram. The effects of the superficial liquid v.locity and solid feed rate on the solid hold-up were inv.stigated under loading and flooding conditions. The solid hold-up increases with an increase in the solid feed rate and decreases with an increase in the superficial liquid v.locity. An artificial-intelligence formalism, namely the multilayer perceptron neural network （MLPNN）, was employed for the prediction of the solid hold-up. The input space of MLPNN-based model consists of four parameters, representing operating and system parameters of the proposed SLCFB. The dev.loped MLPNN-based model has excellent prediction accuracy and generalization capability.

Optimization of microwav.-assisted extraction for picroside I and picroside II from Picrorrhiza kurroa using Box-Behnken experimental design

The response surface methodology was employed to study the optimization of microwav.-assisted extraction of picroside I and picroside II from Picrorrhiza kurroa Royle rhizomes. The effects of solid to solv.nt ratio, and extraction temperature, time and solv.nt on the yields ofpicroside I and picroside II hav. been inv.stigated using Box-Behnken experimental design. The experimen- tal data were fitted to second-order polynomial equations using multiple regression analysis and analyzed using the appropriate statistical method. By solv.ng the regression equation and analyzing 3-D plots, the optimum extraction conditions were found to be： solid to solv.nt ratio, 10 ： 90 （w/v.; temperature, 60 ~C; and extraction time, 60 s. Under the optimal conditions, the yields of picroside I and picroside II are 41.23 and 6.12 *** feed respectiv.ly, which are in good agreement with the predicted v.lues. The ratio of solid to solv.nt significantly affects the yields of picroside I and picroside II. Application of microwav.- assisted extraction of picroside I and picroside II from P kurroa would dramatically reduce extraction time and solv.nt consumption.
